Chapter 1: To the Farm

Max lives in the city with his family. He plans to visit his cousin, Sara. Sara lives on a farm in the country.

Max loves to go to Saras farm. He visits as often as he can. He likes to play with Sara. He has so much fun.

Chapter 2: Finding Doubles at the Farm

Today Maxs dad will take him to visit Sara and her family. Max is excited when he gets to the farm. Hello, Sara! he shouts. Hi, Max! Sara says. Just then Max sees a bird sitting on a branch. 4

1+1=2
Sara spies another bird on the branch. 1 plus 1 is 2. A double! A double is adding two numbers that are the same.

Sara has two dogs that like to run and play with each other. Sara and Max play fetch with the dogs. Max thinks about doubles.

2+2=4
I get it now, he says. Each dog has 2 ears. 2 plus 2 is 4. That is a double, too.

Sara and Max enjoy the fresh air. Being outside makes them hungry. It is a good thing it is snack time soon. Saras mom brings them something to eat.

3+3=6
The cousins have crackers with peanut butter for their snack. Sara takes 3 crackers and Max chooses 3 crackers. They have 6 crackers in all. Another double!

Now the cousins go for a walk, and Saras mom comes, too. They hunt for four-leaf clovers. The clover plants grow in the grassy meadow.

10

4+4=8
Sara sits in the meadow and looks closely for the special clover plants. She discovers two plants. Each has 4 leaves! 4 plus 4 is 8. Another double!

11

Max and Sara head to the small stream on Saras farm. They take off their shoes. They wade in the cool, bubbling water.

12

5 + 5 = 10
Look, my toes are a double! Max says. I have 5 toes on each foot. Sara looks at her toes. Mine, too, she says. Sara and Max wiggle their toes in the water.

13

Chapter 3: More Doubles Fun

Later, Sara shows Max the vegetable garden. Beans, corn, and other vegetable plants grow there. Max likes to eat corn, but Sara likes carrots best. 14

6 + 6 = 12
She pulls 6 long carrots from the ground. Max pulls out 6 carrots, too. They take 12 carrots to Saras mom. She will clean the carrots and save them for supper. 15

Next, the cousins visit the chickens in the chicken coop. Some of the chickens sit on nests. Sara shows Max how to find eggs in the nests. They each get a large basket. Sara and Max fill their baskets with eggs. 16

7 + 7 = 14
Sara fills her basket with 7 eggs. Max finds 7 eggs, too. More doubles fun!

17

Sara and Max walk to Saras house. Sara sees two spiders up high on the porch. The spiders are making webs. Look, a spider city! says Sara.

18

8 + 8 = 16
Sara and Max look more closely. Each spider has 8 long legs. Max says, 8 legs and 8 more legs makes 16 legs in all. A double again! 19

Chapter 4: One Last Double

It is almost time for Max to go home. The cousins rest under some tall apple trees. The branches hold many red apples. 20

9 + 9 = 18
Max picks 9 apples. Sara picks 9 apples, too. Max will bring all 18 apples home to his dad. They will remind Max of the doubles fun he had today with Sara. 21
