It seems hard to believe that it is October already and the local bars and restaurants are obviously thinking about Halloween, but also about Christmas! There are limited places for these special meals, so dont be too slow in booking your party in at your favourite venue. Most people are back at work after the summer break, but of course it takes a while for the information to lter through from the local Town Halls and Tourist Ofces. There was therefore less local news to report on this month, but no doubt everything will be back to normal next month. We have been out and about in the Mar Menor again this month for our special Focus on San Pedro del Pinatar. Read all about this stunning coastal area and all it has to offer on pages 32/33. Once again we would like to welcome our New Advertisers: Amigos Bar Cake Magic Bar Spanglish Saralaras Bar Beach Bar Euphoria Hair & Beauty Restaurante Jaloque

We would like to welcome George Mitchell to the team with his column Never a Dull Moment sharing with us his experiences whilst travelling to various countries around the world. November is of course traditionally all about Remembrance Day and we have once again been asked to support this by asking our advertisers to donate at least 10 to this very worthwhile cause by having the ofcial British Legion Poppy Appeal logo on their adverts. We will be emailing all of our customers regarding this appeal, and although it is

totally voluntary we are hoping to beat last years total of 485. Costa Clida Chronicle Calendar 2014 We are still looking for at least one photo to go on the 2014 calendar. Please send your photos to costacalidachronicle@gmail.com. We will put all entries on the website and the favourite photo/photos will be used on the new calendar. The calendars are distributed free to all businesses in the area and have proved extremely popular over the years. It doesnt seem like ve minutes since Louise Bremner, all the children, young adults and parents were gearing up for the Murcia Dance Annual Performance at the Camposol Fiesta and Mazarrn Festival de Baile in June, and now here we are with summer over, the dancers back at school and all excitedly gearing up for the new term of Murcia Dance to begin! Murcia Dance is a non-prot cultural project of ACAM. Funds to run the professional programme of dance training are raised through membership donations and grants. The Parents Association are continually raising money to assist in supporting the programme and would like to thank all the families, friends and other sponsors from the community that contributed towards raising a massive 943 for Murcia Dance when they participated in the Camposol Fiesta Fun Run. It was once again another hot morning for the run, but the enthusiasm that the children give in everything they do is just fantastic! Thank you also to Camposol Fiesta Committee 2013 for inviting Murcia Dance to partake.

these items are required for the benet and enhancement of the dancers. Remaining funds will be used towards other new and exciting initiatives throughout the year including guest teachers and workshops, new costumes and other resources that may be required. The Parents Association subsidised guest teacher, Glorial Bernals workshop when she visited the dancers on three occasions last term. The children experienced a fantastic hip hop experience. We hope that you are all as excited as we are to see Murcia Dance develop over the next few terms and keep your eyes out for their future performances certain to entertain you!

To support the ongoing development of the programme, the Parents Association will be contributing to the purchase of new music needed for specialised classes and also currently being sourced is the purchase of a new ballet barre to assist the dancers during their technique classes. All

I think that it would be fair to say that many of us Ex-Pats living here on this beautiful Costa Clida have health issues; maybe its just because of the age we are and bits of us are wearing out! Well, that is what happens as we grow older we cannot go on forever, even though many of us say, I dont feel a day over forty and still others profess that they dont feel any older than twenty one! Some of us kid ourselves that we have not changed in looks at all we possibly need to book in for an eye test! [soon]. We can hope that we will go on forever well, a bit longer anyway, and I believe that when we have goals and plans and realize that we have destinies, it can keep us focused and prevents us from slipping into a vegetative state. It is a huge change for many when our working life ends and retirement looms. For some, retirement is

received with joy and with a jump in the air and a click of our heels, we enter into that awaited and much dreamed about period of our lives. For others, retirement looms like a threatening thunderstorm and we await the black clouds of the unknown that is lled with long empty days and even longer nights. Retirement is what we make of it and in spite of perhaps feeling our age at times and more visits to the doctors surgery we can nish off our days with a urry of fun and excitement as we look at what we can do and not what we cant do. I am not stupid enough though, not to realize that for some people, ill health does come with old age and this in itself highlights a need perhaps someone reading this article could be inspired to help out in some way as there are plenty of organizations crying out for help in this area there

is nothing like having a purpose in life. When my Father was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 1998, my sister and I were told that he had only perhaps 18 months to live. I can still vividly remember him saying to me that he had set his mind on seeing in the Millennium. Dad wanted to live into the next century(!) and that is exactly what happened. Dad died in January 2000 and just before he passed away he sat bolt upright in his bed [after being totally out of it for a couple of days], extended his arms and said to my wife and sister Cant you see him? My sister asked who he was talking about and Dad replied Jesus, cant you see him? hes coming for me. This blind and deaf 87 year old Welshman who had received Maundy money from the Queen; who had lunch with the Mayor; who was voted most helpful citizen in the city one year and had never let his disabilities hold him back, then slipped peacefully away. Dad had fullled his purpose in life and had helped and blessed so many people who he considered were worse off than he was in many respects, I have a lot to live up to! My father had set a high standard, a really high bar and I am so thankful that he did. I recently read the following words, Your greatest test is when you are able to bless someone else while you are going through your own storm. Find out about living a life full of purpose at Wellspring Victory Church, Puerto de Mazarrn. God bless you all, [Pastor Andrew]

Something a bit different this month. This is an excerpt from a thank you comment left on Andreas Animal Rescues Facebook wall from a lady called Sam Groves who came over from the UK for ONE day just to meet Andrea and the gang!! You can read the whole comment on our website or Facebook page.

feeds on a daily basis, even though the shop was shut yesterday. These cats rely on Andrea and she has been successful in neutering 2 already with the others getting friendlier each day. Then it was onwards to her beautiful home, in the pouring rain to meet Pedro and his canine friends. Kev, Andreas husband opened the gate and I was greeted by the happiest group of dogs. So much excitement and everyone wanting to say hello, that by the time I reached the back door I was covered in dog footprints from the rain! Amongst this group of friendly dogs, was the little boy himself who Andrea picked up and handed to me. Pedro is so tiny and quiet and he cuddled in; this rst cuddle made my eyes ll with tears. I was surrounded as I cuddled him, by all these other happy, sociable, welllooking dogs saying, Cuddle me next! For such a large pack of dogs, they all mix, play and interact in the most amazing way. We then handed out all the toys I had brought them over from the UK and it was like Christmas. So funny to see them all gathered around me and Andrea deciding who would like what toy with a bit of swapping going around. Mr Freckles wanted most of them. He is so funny; such a terrier and far smaller and cuter in real life. If I ever felt my ankles or laces being nibbled at, I knew it was him. Munchkin then came out and she looks amazing; so bright and still a bit sore, but doing so well despite

not always weight bearing on one of her legs. She is a little doll and was so happy with her toy doughnut. I cant explain how good it was to see these dogs in the kitchen and some outside taking the toys; no ghts, just very happy and content. Even little, blind Chica who relies on the beautiful and serene galga Lily, lined up several toys in her bed.. Read more on www.andreasanimalrescues.com or our facebook page! Please contact Andrea on 690 906 565 for adoptions or voluntary work, or if you have any large items that you would like to donate to us.

Wow!! Where do I start? Andrea picked me up from Murcia airport at 10.15 in the morning and a day of non-stop talking and laughter started, with some sad times thrown in as well. We talked so much that we got lost on our way to her rst Andreas charity shop in Fuente Alamo to feed the 4 stray cats she

had Steve, Jane, Bethany, Becky, Amy, Emily, Lucy and Poppy with Glynn, Paul, Lisa, Bren, Jim, Ashley and Leah. We had to cook a lot of food, but everyone enjoyed it. Bethany brought her bow, so we shot at a target with a picture of a One Direction member on it, which was cool. After the food we all went in the pool; Connor and I threw Bethany in as well as Becky and Amy, then Steve threw me in after I had thrown Bethany in. Then, due to Connors speed, it took Dad, Steve and our cousin Dan to throw Connor in which was really funny; a lot of water splashing about and a lot of fun. After a few more drinks everyone went home. We did have the Caseys over again for a barbecue and once again we threw everyone in the pool which was funny. We also went to the beach with them and Janes sister and family and parents joined us, so once again we took over the beach! Dad took the younger children out on the boat, which they loved. We had to have a quads day with Steve and the gang because they all love doing that. A friend from Liverpool, called Joe came over as well for that day. One day Steve took all us older lot on a 28 mile bike ride to Puerto de Mazarrn and back for a full English breakfast. The trip left us exhausted, but we did go back to his house for a swim and a run on his quad up on a track that the girls had made earlier. We had to say goodbye though, after Shannon had many sleepovers with them and they with us and they had played on the quads and had many barbecues. On the nal day we all went to Steves house and gave his car a wash and soaked everyone (even Poppy soaked her mum with the hose) and ate pizza. We thought we may never get home because our car didnt start, but we did! We will certainly miss them all. Now we have Dave Scott-Morgan and gang over for a few weeks and I will tell you all about that next month. Speak to you all soon!

They joined us for 4 weeks and we had a good time with them. I especially had a good time with Poppy their youngest at about 20 months old. At rst they came for a barbecue along with our friend and his family, so we

World Space Week is all about what many consider The Next Frontier: the planet Mars.

How can limited resources on a planet be used to build a new civilization, without depleting these resources?

ized by the Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission. Organizations across Spain plan 31 events to nationally celebrate World Space Week 2013. 500 students in Beijing will have seen Apollo astronaut Buzz Aldrin at Chinas World Space Week opening ceremony on September 25th during the International Astronautical Congress.

Humanity is quickly conquering this new frontier. Mars Curiosity is the largest rover ever brought to another planet, discovering new features of the Red Planet every day. In 2018 the rst people will get a chance to see the planet from up close through Dennis Titos Inspiration Mars y-by mission, while several organizations are planning the rst manned landing mission, some time in the next two decades.

How can we create an environment that supports human life, without destroying critical elements needed to sustain other planetary processes? Learning these things means that we can apply this logic to other planets, but also to our current planet! Hopefully this will inspire organizers to reach out to schools, universities, astronomy clubs, community centres, where space industry events can celebrate space. There are various events highlighting World Space Week 2013: Mars research demonstrations at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah will be linked to over 20 global locations. The Mars simulations will be managed from the OEWF mission control centre in Austria. Warner Brothers movie Gravity opens during World Space Week in theatres globally. The Space Foundation celebrates World Space Week with the premiere of NASAs Water Falls lm on October 10th in Colorado Springs. EADS Astrium employees will speak to schools in UK, France, Germany, and elsewhere continuing the companys World Space Week tradition. The Mexican Space Agency and Committee on Science and Technology of Mexicos Chamber of Deputies plan World Space Week events in 4 cities. Widespread UK World Space Week celebrations result from grants from the UK Association for Science and Discovery Centres. The National Space Centre in London plans hands-on experiments, talks, shows, competitions and special guests on October 5. South Africas Department of Science and Technology celebrates the theme Exploring Mars Discovering Earth with events in 4 cities. Belgium focuses on Mars on October 4th at the Planetarium of Brussesls and October 9th at Armand Pein Observatory in Ghent. Teachers globally will use space during World Space Week to inspire children about science, technology, engineering, maths and other subjects. For more information, please visit www.worldspaceweek.org

These are enough reasons to take a closer look at Mars exploration. During World Space Week people will be learning about Mars, but also what we are learning about ourselves! Mars gives us an opportunity to dene from scratch what world we want to live in.

Associated World Space Week events are planned in such places as Melbourne, Australia. Pakistan plans 117 events in 11 major cities for a truly nationwide celebration of World Space Week 2013 organ-

Mustard mostaza - is an ancient plant thats full of appeal for contemporary gardeners. The plants are easy to grow and produce seed in as few as 60 days. The greens are edible, the owers attractive and if the seeds are allowed to mature on the plant, they will self-sow and still provide plenty for Mustard making. Mustard will grow well in most soils, but will produce the most seed in rich, welldrained soil. It will thrive if given constant moisture. It likes cool weather; a light frost can even improve the avour. In the spring, sow the seed in drills about 18 inch deep and 15 inches apart. You can also plant Mustard seed in September or October for harvest in autumn and winter if the weather is mild. Mustard in all its forms; shoots, leaves, owers, whole seed or powdered, is a avoursome, low-fat way to spice up any savoury food. The whole seed can be used in pickling and cooking or tossed with tender greens in fresh salads. You can stew mature Mustard leaves as a side dish and the crushed spicy Mustard seed can be used to make a variety of pungent Mustards.

plants, the winemakers friend. Many vineyard owners plant Mustard deliberately as a cover crop or let eld Mustard (Brassica kaber) run rampant. When ploughed back into the soil, the Mustard plants act as a green manure and release nitrogen. Mustard also repels some insects and attracts certain ies which are benecial predators that attack vine-chewing insects. All Mustards come from the family that includes broccoli and cabbage. The black seeds are used for moderately spicy Mustards including Dijon-style Mustard. In West Indian dishes, black seeds are fried until they pop. The black variety produces less-desirable greens and is generally grown for seed. White seeds are the primary ingredient in traditional Mustard and its the most common and the mildest of the three. It is commonly grown in the Mediterranean region. The white seeds also have the strongest preserving power and are therefore the kitchen gardeners choice for pickles, relishes, and chutneys. White Mustards are not typically grown for their greens. Brown Mustard, the hottest of all, is used for curries and Chinese hot Mustards and also for Dijon-type Mustards. Pick Mustard leaves for salad when theyre small, young and tender, or use the larger leaves for sauting or stewing. Add young leaves to stir-fries and salads, adding a nice, sharp avour.

Larger Mustard leaves need to be cooked. Stew them with bacon or a ham hock, or shred and saut them with other greens to make a bed for grilled sh and meats. You can also add mustard greens to soups and stews. The Mustard owers can be used as an edible garnish. If you want to harvest the Mustard seeds, pick the pods just after they change from green to brown, before they are entirely ripe, otherwise they will shatter. The pods should be air-dried in a warm place for about two weeks. Spread them out on clean muslin, an old sheet, or a ne screen. Once dry, gently crush the pods to remove the seeds and hulls. Mustard seed contains no cholesterol, only trace amounts of vegetable fat and about 25% protein. Leaf Mustard contains calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and Vitamin B. Mustard is second in demand to pepper in many countries and historical records indicate the use of Mustard goes as far back as 4,000bc and it is believed that prehistoric man chewed Mustard seeds with his meat (probably to disguise decay). From about 2,000bc, ancient civilizations used Mustard for its oil, a spice and a medicinal plant. It was introduced into western and northern Europe in the early Middle Ages. Over the years, mustard has been used for its curative powers. Its been called an appetite stimulant, a digestive aid and a decongestant. Because Mustard increases blood circulation, its often used in plaster form to treat inammation. Folklore has it you can even sprinkle Mustard powder in your socks to prevent frostbite!

You may have seen the vineyards awash in yellow owers. Those are Mustard

What Is Everything Made Of? In the last fty years, science has learned more about the building material of the universe. It is the strangest stuff, stranger than we can ever imagine. It is a chaotic jumble of dancing particles and points of energy. They follow no order of law of nature, darting and shooting without any order, doing impossible things. Yet that stuff is what we are made of. These swirling sparks just present themselves as things we see, earth, water, planets, and suns, even ourselves. How? The Maker brings it to order and shapes it as He wishes, like a potter with clay. No-

body understands how it ever becomes people. However, it does. It is a literal fact that far from miracles being impossible, life would be impossible without miracles. The Bible talks about it. Psalm 139:15 has phrases like this, Your eyes saw my unformed body. I was made in the secret place. I was woven together in the depths of the earth. You knit me together in my mothers womb. We are fearfully and wonderfully made. God makes us and upholds us moment by moment We live and move and have our being in Him. He controls and harnesses the lawless powers of energy and com-

pacts them and transforms them and gives them form and shape. Hebrews 1:2-3 the Son of God is, upholding all things by the word of His power. That is Jesus, if He is not like that, why bother to talk about Him? A Jesus who can structure nature as He does, is more than a miracle worker much, much more. Put your trust in Him today. He loves you. Join us at the Culture Centre, Camposol B at 10.30am each Sunday. Tel 618 720 181

Stuck In The Middle It is said that we can choose our friends, but not our family and we do know that family life, just like friendships, can have their ups and downs. However, it does not make it any easier when you are caught in between family feuds. In many ways, it makes it more painful because, unlike friendships, we dont always have the luxury of walking away. Love them or hate them, family ties, like an invisible spiders web, connect us to each and every member of our family, nuclear or extended. In the bigger scheme of things, family ties is what links us to the fabric of society and binds us to the values, mores and social culture that we share.

Having said that, being caught in the middle of a family disagreement is uncomfortable and emotionally draining as battle lines are drawn, sides are picked and the drama played out over years, maybe even generations. Dear Jennifer, Should I Spill The Beans? My dearest cousin has been married three times and recently he caught his newest wife cheating on him (just like the other two). I became close to his third wife and am not surprised at her adulterous love affair as I had my suspicions that she is also having a ing with another member of my extended family and I dont know whether I should tell my cousin. He is devastated with the breakdown of his latest marriage, but I feel he has the right to know the whole truth about his cheating wife. Surely he must be at fault in some way, because all three wives cheated on him. So do I tell him or not? Anna B. Dear Ann Keep your suspicions to yourself. No-one knows what goes on in a marriage except between a man and his wife (wives). Intimacy issues are very personal and dont concern you. Your cousin must be painfully aware that his three marriages have broken up for the same reason. Dont add to his discomfort and pain. It will be like adding fuel to a ame. Instead, if you are really fond of him, lend him your support. He needs the emotional support of those close to him now far more than he needs more pain. If you really feel the need to tell him the truth, then at least wait till he is emotionally able to deal with it. Jennifer Dear Jennifer, I Want My Home To Stay Broken! My parents divorced twenty years ago and they both live in the UK. As a young child, I was traumatised by their very ugly split and Ive gone through years of bad relationships and therapy believing that somehow I was to blame. Through therapy, I have learnt to heal my emotional scars and

am in a good place emotionally. Both my parents remarried soon after their divorce and both their marriages were short-lived. Now I have found out from an Aunty that visited me in Spain recently that they have been seeing each other and are thinking of getting remarried! First of all, I am so hurt that I had to nd out the truth from an Aunt and not my parents and secondly, I dont think I can handle the drama that occurs whenever they are in the same room, never mind a marriage. What do I do? Stephanie Dear Stephanie Firstly, it is hard to raise your parents. I know that their divorce affected you deeply but parents are allowed to make mistakes (and learn from them) just like children. Secondly, you are emotionally stronger than before, so keep working on maintaining your emotional strength. Dont let the current family situation take that away from you again. However, if your parents do get back together, try to be happy for them. Forgiveness heals old wounds faster than anything else. Now that you are an adult, learn to live and love your life and leave them to theirs. Jennifer If you would like advice on a problem, please send your question to jennifer@lifemaxxinternational.com. Unfortunately, due to the large number of emails I receive, I wont be able to reply to your questions personally, only via the Ask Jennifer column in the Costa Clida Chronicle.

Pets In Spain Is Not Just For Dogs and Cats! Pets In Spain animal charity has no bounds when it comes to rescuing animals, and its not just dogs and cats, but a new born lamb, goats, rabbits, birds, hamsters, tortoises, pigs, and an Iguana! Billy the goat was the pet of a lady and he lived in a big trailer on her plot of land. When his owner died suddenly, Billy was stranded on the 20,000 sq meter plot. The local authorities knew he was there and without an owner, but they did not respond to pleas from friends of the deceased lady for help in relocating him. Pets In Spain received a call from the local vet clinic and responded immediately, overseeing his safety and feeding him. Billy (now renamed Rasta) is now rehomed with a young English family on a nca where he has a goat friend for the rst time in his life.

Pets In Spain is appealing for people to help raise funds by organising an event in their locality. Unwanted household items can be donated to be sold to raise funds and these can either be delivered to Veterpet veterinary clinic on the N332 at La Marina, next to Mercadona, or by calling 645 469 253.

Cleo is around 8 months old and has already given birth to two kittens. She will rub herself against you for a love and is urgently in need of a new home. She is tri coloured and is in good health. He is a very active boy and very loving, but does need to be either homed on his own or with dogs his own size or bigger than him as he can be boisterous with smaller dogs. Call 634 181 540 Maisie is approx 12 weeks old and was found in the Campo starving and dehydrated. She has beautiful markings like tiger spots and is now in a foster home. She is good with other cats and dogs. Call 645 469 253 Petra is around 2 years old and was found in the Campo dragging her broken back leg. She has had surgery on it and is now completely recovered and waiting for a home. She is good with other dogs and cats and weighs just 6 kilos. For donations by PayPal, credit card, or bank transfer, please visit the donations page on the website. Collection tins and pamphlets are also available from Pets In Spain. The charity is organised and operated entirely by volunteers. All proceeds from fund raising and donations go to help the animals.

In Spain there is no organisation like the RSPCA. Every day Pets In Spain receive calls from people asking for help with animals in imminent life threatening situations. Once a rescue is initiated the animal is assured of total care and welfare and readied for adoption, but the charitys activities are limited due to lack of funding, their biggest expenditure each month being the ever increasing veterinary bills. Having sufcient funds is vital for the charity so that they can save more animals in distress.

The huerta is the area around Murcia City which has traditionally grown a wide variety of irrigated fruit, vegetables and other crops in individually owned market gardens. A rich tradition and distinctive way of life grew up over time which, recently, it has been realized, is disappearing. An echo of the old huertas can be found in the Museum of the Huerta, in Alcantarilla, less than ve miles from Murcia City. It gives an excellent idea of the way of life of the traditional huerta, its customs, traditions and folk art. When we last went (March 2013) entry was free. If the exhibits and their descriptions are in Spanish, there is a short guide to the museum in English.

tarilla. One room which you may have to ask to be shown, is the botica, essentially an old pharmacy with a magnicent and comprehensive collection of items from an old pharmacists collection. It contained a mass of old bottles, powders, potions and even a primitive machine from the 19th Century for growing bacterial cultures which struck us as very unusual.

items of interest in this room were those with a relevance to wine and olive oil making and a well preserved old horse drawn carriage. This apparently was used in the locality to take brides to their wedding in the church, although, we were told, it did not come cheap! A third room contained mannequins clothed in the traditional costumes of the huerta. We were told that there were essentially three types of clothes. One was predictably the everyday working clothes. Then there were the walking out clothes, and, nally, the best wedding or luxury clothes. The womens clothes were predictably more elaborate than the mens. The same room had an enormous collection of fans for every conceivable use weddings, masses in church, funerals, communions, theatre visits and so on. They largely dated from the 19th Century. There were also cots, beds and related furnishings which would have been typical of the traditional huerta house. Continuing the domestic theme, were the weaving looms and some intricately embroidered silk tunics and expensive shoes. Passing on, we came to another display of typical domestic items meat roasting trays, various basins, saucepans, ladles, bells, a 19th Century table cloth, mirrors on the wall and even a portable sewing machine. You will also see here the old labels advertising preserves, obviously related to the abundant fruit grown in the huerta. Then, there was a variety of musical instruments from the huerta, including castanets, a guitar, a lute and a 19th Century requinto, which is another type of guitar. Finally, there was a selection of lamps and lighting from the past. A fth room we found particularly interesting. This is known as the biblioteca (library) and does, indeed, contain a large collection of books by Murcian authors. Its furniture, however, is clearly far more rened than that of the typical huerta house and is intended to represent the meeting place of the huerta landowners. Some of the items of furniture were from the early 19th century and came from the ofce of the rst Mayor of Alcan-

The Museum of the Huerta is situated on the right hand side of the Avenida Principe, a dual carriageway, as you drive from the Autovia del Mediterraneo around Alcantarilla. The rst room has a massive collection of plates, bowls and other ceramic items typical of the huerta. Many were brightly painted and of a 19th Century date. The items came from a variety of sources, including Lorca and Totana as well as from the Murcian huerta itself. There were also plates, pictures, a soup dish dated 1850 and glazed pottery pieces manufactured by Pickman of Cartagena. Small clay gures in a case represented local artisan work. There was also a display of glassware crystal glasses, various types of porrn-like drinking vessels etc. Another display case had glazed porcelain from La Cartuja in Seville dating from the mid-19th Century which was made for palaces and the abolengo de la huerta (houses of families with a noble ancestry in the huerta). Hanging from pegs on the wall were plates, pitchers, jugs, and spouted drinking jugs with other similar items standing on the oor. In the second, adjacent room, there was much more pottery on shelves on the wall, but also furnishings such as decorative shelving, boxes and storage chests, chairs and a remarkable brightly painted old water lter with its lid and tap. We were told that a clean, cold stone would often be placed in the vessel to try and keep the water cool. Another occasional addition, however, was slightly different anis! The domestic furniture exhibited, as you would expect, reects that which would be typical of the traditional huerta house. A corner of the room was sectioned off to show some of the contents of a 19th Century house (Casa Torre) including three enormous earthenware jars which were used in the past to store fresh water, bearing in mind that it might have been transported several kilometres from the nearest source. This room also contained working tools of the huerta such as picks, hoes, saddles, mattocks, shovels, forks, rakes, hand reaping implements, ploughs, baskets made from esparto and weights and measures. Among other

There is also a substantial outside space which is no less interesting. By far the most imposing feature was the working water wheel in one corner with the irrigation channel running down the length of the garden away from it. Nearby, you will nd the recreation of an old huerta house the barraca, which had a well and Moorish bread oven outside. The house had two simple rooms (and no toilet!). The rst was the living room/kitchen with its jugs, basins, and other domestic items. The second was the bedroom with its bed and similar items, as well as a cane shelf on which food would be placed for keeping and preservation for the winter. As well as containing numerous citrus trees, the garden had a good number of old pieces of equipment in it. Just by the watercourse you will nd an old threshing machine with an ancient iron boiler next to it. The threshing machine, which would be pulled by beasts of burden, is dated to the beginning of the 20th Century from the rural area surrounding Cartagena. The boiler, also early 20th Century, was used in the conserve industry. Elsewhere in the garden, you will nd, under an open shelter, a collection of other old agricultural machines, carts and carriages. There are also several other small buildings in the outside area, such as an artisans workshop, which were locked and inaccessible when we visited. Do visit the museum if you can. The timetable varies in winter and in summer, with the museum closed in the heat of the day in the latter, but opened rather longer in the late afternoon and evening (as at March 2013). It is normally shut on a Monday and only opens in the morning (10.00 to 14.00) on Sundays and in August. Although the cost of dining out in Spain is considerably less than in many other countries, the UK included, the kids and I were recently in Lorca and decided to set ourselves the challenge of nding the best value quick snack lunch that we could nd. Sometimes, although the Menu del Das here are very cheap, I really cant face 3 courses in the middle of the day and just prefer something light. The Lorca branch of the pizza and sandwich chain am am proved to be the solution. The kids went for one of the cheaper set menus, with a slice of pizza, potato wedges and a soft drink for only 3.95. The problem I usually face is that fast food outlets rarely have a salad option that I fancy, but at am am the only challenge was deciding which salad to choose from the large selection on offer! I went for the

seafood salad, with crab sticks and prawns and a dish of salsa rosa on the side at 3.99, whilst the boys chose Hawaiian and Four cheese pizza from the wide range of pizzas included in the offer. The soft drinks were so large that we ended up sharing 2 between the three of us, as one of my pet hates is the size of the huge cups full of ice on offer at many places, which I normally end up leaving as I cant drink it all!! Having stolen a few potato wedges to sample, I had to agree that they were delicious and the three empty trays bore testament to the fact that not all fast food tastes bad. My salad was fresh, tasty and generous with the seafood, although there was so much iceberg lettuce that even a dedicated salad lover would admit defeat. The staff were courteous and efcient and we were served quickly. At the end of the meal as

we cleared away our trays the young guy came over to say Thats very kind; you dont need to do that! I can get that for you. Total for 3 people was just 11.89, so very good value and a pleasant and quick dining experience for those in a hurry! amam have branches in most retail outlets and city centres, including Cartagena, Murcia and Lorca. Couple of thoughts this month. When snorkeling recently in Cartagena, I was struck by the fact that although the water surface was quite choppy and difcult to keep the snorkel clear, the sh were oblivious to the commotion on the surface. I have heard quite a few people say that when you become a Christian all your troubles disappear. This is rubbish of course. God does not promise or even hint at all our problems vanishing. Many Christians face larger and more severe problems than they would ever have if they had not become Christians. Despite the commotion on the surface of our lives, Christians can experience deeper peace because they know God is with them. The other thought is that life can change in an instant. Remember the 100 car pile-up in the UK and the recent ash oods in the USA? The lives of hundreds of people changed without warning. We met a lady last week in her 40s who was perfectly healthy and suddenly

fell because she had a stroke. This in itself is bad enough, but this poor woman fell and smashed her face on the oor at the same time. Her husband is now struggling to cope. How would we work through this sort of lifechanging event? Whether it is an accident, an unexpected illness or a health problem, the point is that life can change in an instant for ever. If we are struggling with the commotion and busyness of life, or have experienced a sudden change in our circumstances, peace is available to us because Jesus said, Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. John 14v 27. We need to believe this! You are invited to join us for any of our events in October. The Hopefuls, named as such because the carers and their long suffering partners who come to our get-togethers, are indeed hopeful that we will get some concrete help from the authorities in Murcia eventually. Alzheimers and other dementias need to be urgently catered for in some way by the authorities as they are steadily increasing in numbers in the Mar Menor area. These are

dreadful diseases that need to be recognised and assisted, as they cause huge strain and stress for the carers, most of whom receive no help at all. Our meetings have been very benecial for both carers and their partners and our numbers are growing - even the 1.5hrs is a bit of respite for all. If you know of anyone who is worried, stressed and in need of some respite

then please join us at our next meeting to be held on Tuesday, 8th October at 11.30 and every alternative Tuesday thereafter. We meet at the user friendly and spacious Luis Lounge on the San Javier camp site situated on the Balsicas Road out of San Javier. Drinks, food and games are available all day. Faith The Pony Who Has A Prosthetic Leg Has A New Friend. Faiths carers, Sue and Rod Weeding, co founders of the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales saw young Cieran Kelso, an 8 year old double amputee from Northwich in Cheshire, with his parents, being interviewed on BBC Breakfast recently.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Sue explained The TV was on in the background and I heard Winter, the dolphin from Florida with a prosthetic tail n mentioned. I was intrigued because we had a discussion with Dwayne Mara who lives in New Orleans about this. He makes Faiths and Mollys prosthetic legs and is friends with Kevin Carroll from Alabama who made the n for Winter. He was caught up in a rope in a crab trap and Faith was severely injured by a rope wrapped round her leg while tied to a tree. so their circumstances were very similar.

The interview was with Cieran and his parents Gary and Gemma. Cieran had both his legs amputated below the knee when he was only 13 months old. He had contracted meningococcal septicemia. Cieran had seen the lm Dolphin Tale starring Morgan Freeman and Kris Kristofferson and wanted to swim with Winter. After constant fundraising, which incidentally is still ongoing for Cierans future, the couple were able to afford a pair of prosthetic ippers to allow Cieran to fulll his dream this year. Sue continued, I, like many others, are amazed at how brave this young lad is. He has such a positive attitude for one so young. Like Faith, he wants to be treated as normal and get on with his life, which Im sure he will. Just because you have prosthetic limbs doesnt mean you are any different from anybody else. Faith and Cieran are both on Facebook and Faith has contacted him and invited him to meet up in Spain sometime in the future. They are going to keep in touch with each other and Faith has sent him a copy of her new book about her and Molly the pony, which has been written for children and a T-shirt and DVD all about the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre. Gemma added, I am sure Cieran and Faith will meet one day soon and become good pals. It would be great to see Cieran walking Faith down the lane outside the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre. What a photograph that will be! Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre work closely with Rojales town council and on hearing about Cieran, the Mayor and his councilors have extended a warm welcome to this brave lad and his family when they come to visit Faith and have said they would like to meet them personally. For further information about Cieran and his dedicated parents, go to www.cierankelso. co.uk or search on Facebook. For more information about Faith, go to www.easyhorsecare.net or search for Faith the Pony. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre is open to the public every Sunday from 1pm. Come and enjoy refreshments and food in our garden caf and go on our horse tour to meet our horses, ponies and donkeys.

Hecho a Mano, II Saln de los Ocios Tradicionales y la Cultura Popular 2013/ Hand Made Traditional Crafts and Popular Culture Fair This is the second edition of the fair for traditional and popular crafts to be held at the IFEPA showground in Torre Pacheco, from 25th to 27th October. The previous event was a great success judging by both in the number of visitors attending the show and for the large number of stallholders who took part. The level of satisfaction amongst exhibitors and the response of visitors to the show exceeded all expectations. Around 100 exhibitors took part, from Spain and other countries. In this fair IFEPA aims to help rescue traditional arts and crafts from obscurity and highlight the importance of the artisan sector, as well as contributing towards revitalising the sector. The show also aims to reinforce existing channels of commercialisation and links not only to the general public, but also in the commercial trade world with the artisan products on offer. The Second Edition of The II Saln de Los Ocios Tradicionales y La Cultura Popular includes businesses that make and sell artisan products from the most traditional

of crafts to the most bizarre, including pottery and ceramics, metalwork, glass, wicker and basketry, wood and marquetry, cribs, quilts and patchwork, footwear, perfumes, cakes, embroidery, tapestry, jewellery, etc., With direct sales of products and conducting further workshops demonstrations, it is a multisectoral fair, geared to exhibitors from different areas of specialisation. As well as the exhibition area, a section will be dedicated to culture and tradition, in which workshops and practical displays will be taking place, with a programme of music and dance performed by the various associations of music and dance which exist in the region of Murcia. There will be various types of displays, including gastronomic and other special interest exhibits completing the commercial offering and making the event the ideal location to show and sell artisan products. The aim is to make the show as interesting as possible and attract the maximum numbers of visitors. Hecho A Mano is a viable commercial proposition and will be held in an area of 25,000 square metres, in a covered, indoor environment, with all the facilities and services required by exhibitors, including guarded parking, restaurant facilities, overnight security, childrens area, hostesses, VIP salon, cloakroom, security and promotional back-up.

IFEPA is fully aware of the current economic situation and has made a special effort to ensure that this fair is cost-effective for the exhibitors participating to ensure the presence of as many artisans as possible. Attractive offers have also been presented to the associations of artisans to participate along with their members, and to the councils within the region, offering additional tting out on the stands at no extra cost to incentivise them to present their own traditions and customs at the fair with the aim of making the experience as interesting and entertaining as possible for those visiting the event. IFEPA has undertaken an extensive publicity campaign with adverts in the press, radio, television, social networks, billboards etc, to promote this event. In addition, invitations have been issued to housewives associations, pensionista organisations and other associations etc within Murcia and the surrounding provinces to visit and take part in Hecho a Mano 2013. The next exhibition at the IFEPA centre is the Dog Show on 9th and 10th November. For further information please call 968 336 383, ext. 1-5

In the interval tea, delicious cakes and scones with cream and jam were served, instigating the usual debate about whether you should apply cream or jam rst to the scones. All the delicious cakes were made and donated by La Manga Owners Club members and were on sale to help boost the fundraising. The whole event was organised by Tricia Brister and her team, raising 335 for El Buen Samaritano charity, which provides around 300 meals per day for people who are facing hardship and are unable to support themselves. When Pop Icon, Madonna, sang about Falling in love with San Pedro I dont imagine she was referring to our very own San Pedro del Pinatar in the Mar Menor Region. However, if she ever visited Im sure that she would! San Pedro del Pinatar (Saint Peter of the Pinewoods) is about 49km from the provincial capital Murcia and is situated between the Mediterranean coast and the Mar Menor. Just off the AP7 and only ve minutes drive from Murcia San Javier Airport, it occupies a small peninsula with 14km of coastline between the two seas and has a Spanish and Expat population of around 21,000 residents. San Pedro del Pinatar is a bustling urban resort with pretty plazas and charming walkways and has many British bars and restaurants which subtly blend together to give the ambience of a very typical Spanish town. On Avenida de Las Salinas, you will nd the popular Amigos Bar with inside and outside seating where all live sports are shown in HD and food and drink is available every day. The town also has a diverse range of businesses and retailers from large supermarkets such as Lidl and Consum to Eroski. Just 100 yards from Lidl and on the opposite side of the road, you will nd Kitchens Plus One who celebrate their 4 year anniversary this month. Whether you just want new doors or replace the whole kitchen, Phil and

Derrian will be able to help. It is not surprising that San Pedro is popular with tourists and welcomes thousands of visitors throughout the year. Its coastal location in between Pilar de la Horadada and Los Alcazares makes it an ideal base for touring the Costa Clida and Costa Blanca as well as the ancient cities of Murcia and Cartagena. Although busiest during the summer months of July and August, San Pedros all year round mild weather, its three beautiful sandy beaches and numerous golf courses just a short drive away, this thriving town is always lively. The huge weekly street market in San Pedro takes place on Mondays between 9am and 2.30pm. Typically Spanish, you will nd everything from fruit and vegetables to household products and souvenirs. Directly opposite the market you will nd the Cake Magic Tea Rooms. Why not take a step back in time and pop in to sample their speciality cupcakes or quintessential English afternoon teas all served on vintage style china tea sets? Lo Pagan is a coastal pedania (hamlet) of San Pedro and here you will nd the popular sh market and the beach of Playa de Villananitos. This ne sandy beach is ideal for families as it has safe and easy access and a childrens play area. There are also several beachfront bars restaurants and small shops. You hardly need to move from your sun lounger to enjoy a cool drink or a bite to eat at the Spanglish Bar. This beach is 840 metres long and meets the Playa de la Mota at the famous Quinton Windmill. It is at this point that you will nd the upstairs Beach Bar which serves traditional British food and drink and has British TV including Sky Sports.

Stretching almost 3km along the Mar Menor coastline, Playa de La Mota is the longest beach in San Pedro de Pinatar and borders the Regional Park Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro . The park covers 856 hectares and you can spot Pink Flamingo, Royal Herons and other exotic wildlife that live there throughout the year. It is a great day out with a visitor centre and pathways which allow you to gently walk or cycle to explore the surroundings. Within the park you will nd the most famous of the Mar Menor Mud Baths (banos de lodo). The ne sand mixes with natural minerals and elements such as magnesium and calcium to produce a mud which has amazing healing properties. Not only is it used as a beauty treatment, but is known to be very effective in the treatment of skin conditions and rheumatic and arthritic disorders.

On the other side of the park you will nd the delights of the Port of San Pedro. Just follow the road and pathway between the large lakes and you will reach the Marina de las Salinas. The Marina is home to the Restaurant El Hombre Del Velero (The Yachtsman), serving exquisite English and traditional Spanish cuisine. As well as the attractive inside seating and dining area there are two outside terraces with views over the marina on one side and the Mediterranean Sea on the other. The smallest of the three beaches is Playa y

de La Puntica which has all the usual amenities including toilets and adapted changing facilities as well as pedalos, sea canoes, sun loungers and parasols, all available to hire. For those with an interest in sport and tness, the recently opened Pinatar Arena is an absolute must visit. The Arena was designed by its owner Mariano Sanchez who is the Captain of the Cartagena Football Team and

was born and bred in San Pedro del Pinatar. The amazing state of the art facility has a gymnasium and spa as well as a bar, restaurant and creche. However it is the phenomenal FIFA approved football training facility that has well and truly put San Pedro del Pinatar on the map. In the short time that the Arena has been open it has already attracted interest from domestic teams in La Liga and has hosted pre-match training for several European national teams. Indeed it is conrmed that Spanish Under 21 National Team will be training at the facility in October. The Pinatar Arena really cannot be overstated and we will be telling you more about it in future issues of the Costa Clida Chronicle. There is so much more to say about San Pedro del Pinatar but why not go along and see for yourself? I really did Fall in love with San Pedro!!

Trafalgar Day is the celebration of the victory won by the Royal Navy, commanded by Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, over the combined French and Spanish eets at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805. Admiral Lord Nelson commanded the eet from HMS Victory but was mortally wounded in the engagement, so the event also commemorates and celebrates his life. Wreaths are laid at his tomb in St Pauls Cathedral and on board the Victory at Portsmouth. The historic signal England expects. is sent from the ship at 8am followed by a memorial service on board. national Fleet Review held off Spithead in the Solent on 28 June was the rst since 1999 and the largest since Her Majesty The Queens 1977 Silver Jubilee.

Wreaths are laid at Nelsons tomb in St Pauls Cathedral and on board the Victory at Portsmouth. The historic signal England expects. is sent from the ship at 8am followed by a memorial service on board. The Sea Cadets display and parade takes place on the Sunday nearest October 21st and is free of charge. Expect bands and a salute during the display which lasts over an hour and has been a highlight of the Sea Cadets calendar for over a century. There are various celebrations throughout the country to celebrate Trafalgar Day, including those in Birmingham. The anniversary is celebrated by a ceremony at the statue of Lord Nelson in the Bull Ring. This statue is the oldest statue to Lord Nelson in the United Kingdom. The statue is regaled with swags of laurel and owers, possibly due to its location by the wholesale ower markets of the city. This tradition was carried on throughout most of the nineteenth century and was revived in 2004.

The formation of the Navy League in 1894 gave added impetus to the movement to recognise Nelsons legacy and grand celebrations were held in Trafalgar Square on Trafalgar Day, 1896. It was widely commemorated by parades, dinners and other events throughout much of the British Empire in the 19th century and early 20th century. It is still widely celebrated in navies of the Commonwealth of Nations. Trafalgar Day public celebrations declined after the end of World War I in 1918. The massive casualties and upheaval had changed the general public perception of war as a source of glorious victories to a more sombre view of it as a tragedy, for which the newly instituted Armistice Day on 11 November was created. However, Trafalgar Day was still marked as a public day each year. Around 1993, it was rumoured that John Majors government might make it a public holiday in place of May Day and this plan has been revived in the 2011 Tourism Strategy created by the current coalition government. The year 2005 was the bicentennial of Trafalgar, and the Royal Navy led Trafalgar 200 celebrations. The 2005 Inter-

The ceremony is led by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham and involves men and women of HMS Forward, Sea Cadet Units from across the West Midlands and various civic organisations including The Nelson Society and The Birmingham Civic Society. Afterwards there is a wreath laying by naval and civic organisations and a parade marches off to Victoria Square, the public square in front of the seat of local government, where the Lord Mayor takes the salute.

The Darwinian Gardeners held the rst meeting of the autumn session on September 2nd. Thirty seven members braved a heavy downpour to meet at a large garden centre on the outskirts of Totana. We found a wide range of plants at reasonable prices, including a large number of trees and quite a few people left with laden car boots. The second part of the outing was to one of Totanas renowned potteries, which specialises in unglazed plant pots. The owner showed us the automated process which is used for the majority of the production and was happy to answer all our questions. He also explained how the different colours of clay are produced and how texture is introduced to the smaller numbers of hand made pots. The owner demonstrated the technique for making pots on the wheel and quickly produced ve neat little pots. Several members accepted with some apprehension his invitation to try their hands at the technique and with a lot of help and guidance from the professional, several half-reasonable pots were achieved. After drying and ring, these pots will be ready for us to collect, along with a souvenir pot for each couple made by the owner.

The day was rounded off by an excellent lunch at the Venta La Rata and generally voted a great success. New members are always welcome. Please check our webpage on www.bolnuevo.com or phone Anne on 669 338 885 for details

Invaded and destroyed over the centuries by such empires as the Mongol, Ottoman, Persian and Russian, this little country is still standing and certainly punches above its weight. Georgia, now once again proudly independent, but struggling since the 2008 war with its big neighbour Russia, is most denitely standing at a crossroads. The country that was the birth place of the biggest mass murderer the world has ever seen, Joseph Stalin, doesnt want to cut ties with its big brother in the East completely, yet at the same time is most denitely looking towards Nato and the West. Interesting times indeed for Georgia and its people.

found a gem of a home stay not far from the little main square; comfy bed, food and copious amounts of local wine included for an almost embarrassing 12 per night, while my host, Sveta, in typical Georgian style could kill you with kindness. After a deep sleep, gallons of coffee and breakfast, I left the next morning at 8am; a long day planned. Destination (and my main purpose for coming here) Gergeti Holy Trinity Church.

Much later, back down in the village, I sat out at one of very basic cafs where I somehow managed to eat an entire Khachapuri; a classic Georgian dish thats basically a seriously caloric hot cheese pie. Mouth watering? Put it this way........ just picture Homer Simpson drooling...... No surprise that Georgia, due to its abundance of natural food and wine, was known as the Riviera of the USSR. I stayed two more days in Stepantsminda, even cycling the nal kilometres towards the Russian border which was seriously and I mean seriously heavily patrolled. All the time I remembered the wise advice not to wander off the beaten track.

Id already spent four days exploring the charming cobbled streets of the capital Tbilisi and quickly fell in love with everything Georgian. Now, hand on my heart I can only say that about two other countries Ive been in. Put simply, Georgia is a beautiful country with beautiful people, but as charming as Tbilisi was, it was into the wilds I wanted to go, so by ramshackle bus I headed north through indescribable mountain scenery to the town of Stepantsminda, on the Georgian military highway. What a ride that was!
In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

I climbed up steep rocky paths that wound through lush mountain meadows lled with wild owers Id never seen the likes of and many hours later, at a height of 7,119 feet, I reached a at grassy plain upon which stood the iconic 14th (still functioning) church. Words fail me at the serenity. No wonder its seen as the symbol of Georgia and its people. I sat up there for an hour and just soaked it all in.

Back in my home stay, Sveta fussed over me, let me lounge around in the hammock in her garden, cooked me hot breakfasts and in the evening lled me with more food and local wine. She also took care of my sunburnt arms by slathering them in unpasteurised chilled yogurt (a very strange experience, which I was indeed sceptical of) .... however, it worked brilliantly. On my last evening, Sveta graciously let me into her kitchen and taught me how to make Khachapuri, a tremendous experience! Later, supping a glass of red, I lay in the hammock and watched the sun set on the roof tops of the Caucasus, which has to be one of the most beautiful yet volatile and dangerous places in the world. In this part of the world, undisputed borders abound and this is one place you do not want to thumb your nose at the authorities. As one old man told me, Be careful where you walk......you dont want to accidently wander into Russia. Its not just the recent war over South Ossetia between Georgia and Russia, but add in nearby Chechnya, the breakaway region of Abkhazia and nally Dagestan.....thats what makes for a real powder keg of a region. On arrival in Stepantsminda I quickly

Carlos Prats 628 824 555 Fr. Octavio Carpena 676 219 445 www.pastranaonline.com Saint Francis Of Assisi Saint Francis of Assis, born Giovanni di Pietro de Bernardone, but nicknamed Francesco by his Father, on either 1181/1182, was an Italian Catholic. Sometimes it helps to begin with the nal scene in a story. We are told that the great Francis of Assisi welcomed death singing, indeed that a great ock of larks soared in the sky singing with him that very evening of his death. One day, Francis wandered into the ruined church of Saint Damien. As he admired the unusual cross, the risen Jesus spoke to

him Francis, rebuild my church which as you can see is falling in ruin. This simple invitation awoke energy and purpose in his heart. Francis set to work with a will and went on to rebuild many ruined churches nearby, especially Saint Mary and the Angels. He now just wanted to walk in the footsteps of Jesus and to live by His gospel. Many scoffed, but others began to sit up and take notice. One such person was a rich young nobleman who invited Francis

to his house, who observed Francis praying all night praising God and the most Blessed Virgin Mary. He promptly gave away all his riches to the poor and followed Francis. We know that Francis lived as a hermit one third of each year. He would fast, pray and seek God. At other times he was a wondering preacher and even went to the Middle-East to preach the Gospel. Brother Leo recorded Francis prayer Lord allow me to feel in my body and soul the suffering of Your Passion; let me also feel in my heart the love with which you have for me. Saint Francis of Assisi is the rst known person in history of the Church to receive the stigmata, which are the marks and wounds of the crucied Christ in 1224, just two years before his death. A pray that Francis left us is Remember that when you leave this earth you cant take with you anything that you have received, only what you have given.

C a v a l l i Foundation is not just another charitable organisation set up to rescue and protect horses, although that in itself is a tremendous job! Cavallis aim is to help horses, ponies and donkeys help people in need, whether the need be physical, psychological, emotional or social. Horses that have experienced trauma, neglect and abandon will be taken in and healed so that they in turn may carry out a similar healing process with people. They will be given a new lease of life in an environment which will afford them freedom to run as a herd as opposed to being fenced in alone or stabled with no contact either with people or other horses. Cavalli has 12 horses and ponies of its own to take hacks,

do trekking, give riding classes and carry out work in therapy and formation. The proceeds of these activities will go towards rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming more horses in need Helping horses help people! Sabba, for example, is thoroughly enjoying her Psychotherapy work with people! Shortly we have to help out with two horses in Fuente Alamo and we already have a waiting list of horses and ponies we cant cope with just yet. We desperately need to fence the Cavalli Ranch land in Barrancos de Gebas and have the water connected, so any donations would be welcomed and immediately put towards the cause. Cavallis next fundraising activity will be the Special Halloween Show to be held at META Riding Centre on Saturday 2nd November. All proceeds will go towards fencing the Cavalli Ranch land in Gebas.

G e o r g e Mitchell Following a career, in which Londons Dance Expression magazine called him, One of the UKs most innovative choreographers, G e o r g e Mitchell has nally hung up his shoes on a life he now refers to as his parallel universe. Originally from Aberdeen, Georges passion is to explore the world, and so far he has travelled in over 70 countries, experiencing extraordinary adventures along the way. Very often these travels are off grid, giving

him the feeling that he has stepped on stones that possibly no other human being has ever tread. George started to tap dance at the age of four and was initially taught by his Mum Levena who ran her own successful dance school. However it wasnt until he was in his twenties that he took it seriously and moved to London to study the art of rhythm tap. George has been in Russia over a hundred times since 1993, working in dance with various groups, teaching workshops and performing in theatres and Jazz clubs. Realising from early on that he had nothing in common with the showy London musical scene and that he wanted no part of it, George decided to step out on his own and create his own work. In 1997 he started to teach freelance dance workshops and with his no-nonsense approach to Tap, he soon became highly sought after; his choreography and teaching style were simply revolutionary.

He set up his own company, Trap 4 Tap Company and started to produce his own shows. George then went onto write and choreograph his own unique Rhythm Tap Syllabus which was an introduction to young students on how to Tap properly. It was a huge success and was taught to thousands of students over the next eight years. He wrote/produced/directed and choreographed numerous sell out shows between 1999 and 2007. In 2003 George bought and directed his own dance school. He turned his dance school Evolution into one of the UKs largest dance schools. Having changed the way Tap was perceived, George wanted to change the image of dance schools, but he endured tremendous criticism and within three years, Evolution had 750 paying students on its books. In April 2008, at the age of 37, George sold both Evolution and Trap 4 Productions, but in Moscow in 2010/2011, he again performed in front of a live audience mixing the rock music of Status Quo with the sounds of Tap, but this was to be his nal performance. George held no dance qualications whatsoever. He was a self taught hoofer who carved a career out of teaching nothing but his own work and he is immensely proud his achievements. George has a holiday home on Condado de Alhama between Alhama de Murcia and Mazarrn and spends much of his time there. In his very rst attempt at becoming published, George had one of his short stories, A Spontaneous Act, published in a book entitled, Ten Best Short Stories of 2011. Since then he has also independently published the following short stories; Time To Go; Get Me To The Church On Time and Nothing To Declare. He has recently nished his rst ctional novel, Moral Dilemma. Moral Dilema Sick of who and what he has become, city boy Max Elliot nally casts off the shackles of his greedy material life, only to soon discover that opting out of the rat race and trying to nd oneself, doesnt necessarily enrich your life either. Disillusioned and near broke, more life-changing decisions need to be made and as a result, Max bounces from one dilemma to the next. Long forgotten money, the law, forged documents, corrupt ofcials, and the arrival into his life of a very special, if somewhat troubled girl. These situations mentally push Max to the limit as he searches deep inside himself trying to establish who he really is and what, if anything, he morally stands for. Is it possible to have money AND morals? For more information on George Mitchell, go to georgermitchell.com

Santiago Rail Tragedy Rail Board ADIF has appealed against a court order which saw 29 members of its management team charged in relation to the fatal crash on July 24 in Galicia, which left 79 dead and hundreds injured. Five top managers, including three Chief Executive Ofcers have been called to testify as accused parties. ADIF has been ordered to supply full information of everyone who has ever been a CEO or member of the board, Area Safety Manager for the north-west or National Safety Manager, and Inspections Manager for the departments. ADIF intends to appeal against the charges, but said it will cooperate fully with the judge. The worst crash in Spains railway history, the ALVIA train between Madrid and Ferrol derailed 4km before reaching Santiago de Compostela, in the village of Angrois. It happened at 20.40hrs and the carriages tipped over at the notorious A Grandeira bend. Several caught re and others were completely crushed, having smashed against a wall at the side of the track at 190kms/hr before tipping over. Among the dead were a TV presenter, a radio DJ, a retired politician, a two-year-old child and passengers and residents from all over Spain who were on their way to Galicia for holidays and work. Survivors wounds ranged from cuts and bruises through to severe brain injuries. Although the driver was immediately arrested, his colleagues and the nation as a whole have come out in support of him, saying the braking systems on the track were out of date, the curve was lethal and there is no indication to drivers as to when they are leaving the high-speed AVE line and entering the regional lines, where the speed limit drops by nearly two-thirds. belong to other rms or which are publiclyowned. New Transparency Law The government is about to approve a new Transparency Law which dictates that all parties must clearly state what public funds are spent on. All other countries in Europe with more than a million inhabitants have some type of law giving ordinary civilians access to account data and similar information and are among a total of 93 countries in the world which have such legislation in place. To date, Spain is one of the exceptions to the rule, but this is set to change now that the rst step towards bringing the Transparency Law into force has been taken. This will come into force as soon as it has been announced that the Transparency Law has been given the Royal assent, but the actual law itself will take a year to incorporate into State legal practices. The law was one of Mariano Rajoys electoral promises and was also within the plans of the previous PSOE government. It will give citizens access to accounts, budgets, auditors reports, tax paid and other scal information, including details of what the money they pay to the State is being spent on and complete disclosure of everything relating to public works contracts, however small. Madrid Mayoress Poor Olympic Bid Madrid will not run for the 2024 Olympics while the citys Mayoress Ana Botella is in power. Botellas speech in English written phonetically by public speech advisor Terence Burns, from the USA has become the subject of ridicule throughout the country and the infamous line about enjoying a relaxing cup of caf con leche in the Plaza Mayor has gone viral. Botella (PP), wife of former right-wing Spanish president Jos Mara Aznar, was asked whether it was sensible government policy attempting to host the event when unemployment was at 27% and the country was buckling under the weight of high taxes, enforced austerity measures and drastic cuts in funding for basic public services. Madrid has lost out to London, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo respectively over recent years. If Madrid went ahead with a bid for the 2024 Games, it would be up against strong candidates such as Paris and Berlin and Botella does not believe Madrid can compete with these. Migraines Affect 13% Of Spanish Population Nearly a million people in Spain suffer from chronic headaches, according to the Spanish Neurology Society (SEN), with splitting, pulsating headaches normally felt in the eyes and temples which cause nausea, sensitivity to light, blurred vision, slurring and confusion. At times severe symptoms include vomiting, unstable limbs, temporary near-paralysis of the face or one side of the body and hallucinations, with conditions considered chronic

where sufferers may be ill for at least 15 days in a calendar month. These sufferers nd it extremely hard to hold down jobs as they have to be off work for anything up to 50% of their lives, or nd it impossible to work when they do attend, potentially costing employers up to two billion euros a year. Women are more likely to suffer from regular and debilitating headaches than men, with 18% of females prone to migraines, which may be partly due to the fact that the menstrual cycle is one of the most common triggers of migraine. Stress is responsible for 60% of migraines. Prolonged periods without food, especially where these cause low blood-sugar levels, vitamin or iron deciency, lead to migraines in 16% of cases and alcohol can also be a cause. Dehydration, excess heat or direct sunlight, food poisoning, or smoking can set patients headaches off, as will eye-strain, especially by regular computer users, reading in poor light or inadequate eye protection against the suns UV rays. Obesity, over-consumption of caffeine or overthe-counter painkillers, poor diet, or sleeping patterns are often behind chronic cases, but SEN stresses that it is essential for anyone who is aficted with migraines, however infrequent, to consult their doctors and get a referral to a neurologist. Bullght Protesters Storm Madrid Nearly 15,000 people protested in Madrid over one of Spains most famous bull-ghting exhibitions, the Toro de la Vega. Demonstrators snapped a lance in half the type used to spear bulls in the ring as they read out manifestos in front of the PP headquarters. Members of the Partido Animalista, an animal rights independent political party, say both the right-wing PP and the left-wing PSOE are responsible for the cruel and barbaric act of the Toro de la Vega. They called the Toro de la Vega an iconic display of animal cruelty and said it is one of the most savage and brutal of its type in Spain. Actress Beatriz Rico, author Soledad Purtolas and TV presenter Mara Valverde took part in the demonstration. Cyclists Call For Tougher Penalties For Careless Drivers A two-wheeled demonstration calling for stiffer criminal sanctions for drivers who run down cyclists saw 1,200 riders taking part. The protesters rode a 35km circle starting and nishing in Pedrajas de San Esteban in the Valladolid province, in a rally organised by the towns cycling club in memory of two of their members who died after being knocked over by a drunk driver. Sergio Garca Herrero and Diego Garca Capa, both aged 32, lost their lives on July 28 on the CL-602 minor road in the village of Olmedo and the motorist who had ploughed into them was found to be over the alcohol limit. Sergios sister Raquel read a manifesto addressed to the central governments trafc department and the ministry of justice, calling for tougher sanctions and sentences for drivers who were careless around cyclists on the roads. She said road safety education was sorely lacking and that bikers should be free to exercise their sport, or chosen means of transport, in secure conditions.

Broadband, fourth-generation mobile phones and extra-fast connections are now the norm and have forced the governments hand when it comes to reforming the law. It aims to increase competition, improve the service to the public, remove red tape and over-onerous legal requirements to allow operators to grow and increasing networks available. Setting up networks will become easier as environmental and urban planning licence requirements will be eliminated and the guarantee to all customers of access to fast connections will mean freeholders known as communities of property owners will be unable to block the installation of such networks. Operators will also be permitted to use channels which

During previous summers I have tried tinted lashes, false lashes and even the individual stick on eyelashes; anything to get that look, but then I had never heard of The Dreamweave Mascara. It does not run, it does not smudge and it is branded as eyelash extensions in a bottle. Well I would agree with that. This is a superb product now available from Vivienne at The Fuschia Beauty Clinic on Camposol C. Not cheap at 17.95, but absolutely worth it. I have been using this for over 2 months now and it is still going. Nice one Viv! I have never had very good teeth and have a mouth with many llings and crowns etc. Not through any fault of my own I might add, as I have always religiously kept to my dental appointments both here and in the UK, but neither of my parents have good teeth either so it is inevitable. The Salon on Camposol Sector C now do teeth whitening which is a cosmetic procedure NOT a dental one, so I decided to give it a try; always the sceptic as I had thought that crowns and dentures would

not change colour. I was wrong! My teeth did come up several shades whiter and I was very pleased with the results. This procedure is easy, effective and not uncomfortable either. The treatment is carried out in 4 x 15 minute steps and is not painful at all. I will certainly be returning to do this again. Melissa and Ella at The Salon are both qualied to do this treatment and right now there is an offer on so dont delay! On the evening of 11th September we attended the Age Concern Black and White Ball in Puerto de Mazarron. For me, this has to be one of the best events of the year and a chance to dress up a bit. The venue was outside on the terrace behind Le Sal in the new marina and it was a beautiful evening in an idyllic setting. We all know and love Martin Ross, but we also had the pleasure of hearing Karen Noble sing. What a voice! Rarely do the hairs stand up on the back of my neck, but they did that night. We had a glass of Cava on arrival followed by an excellent hot and cold buffet provided by The Rov-

ing Diner. The selection of food on offer was amazing. Looking forward to the next one... Just prior to this issue of the Chronicle going to print, I was delighted to attend a birthday party lunch at The Quality Indian Restaurant on Camposol B. They decorated the tables beautifully, knowing it was a special occasion and the food and service was truly excellent; nothing was too much trouble. I cannot believe how quickly the afternoon disappeared because of the excellent company. I did perhaps have one too many glasses of Cava, but that was also provided by the restaurant! It is not called The Quality without reason. Their Menu del Dia at only 9.95 is also excellent value for money. Happy 50th Birthday Ruma Jordan from all of us at The Costa Calida Chronicle! More next month Teresa

ACTIN has saved the lives of 80 dogs since its conception. ACTIN is a non-rescue organisation, so why have we saved this many dogs and re-homed, fostered and adopted more than 50? The answer is we cannot do the work we are doing without saving them. Some of the local people around La Pinilla and Camposol area will remember the special boy in those early days, where loads of people made a rota to check on these dogs and offer them food and clean water Rudy the Pointer Rudys rescue included the rescue of 4

other adult dogs and ultimately the birth of 8 Pointer puppies. The veterinary treatment, residency costs etc, could not have happened without the support that ACTIN had from other charities, plus the carers that helped to look after all these dogs and puppies. ACTIN has been rewarded by Rudy going to England to enjoy the rest of his life. To continue with this rate of rescue and rehoming we need sponsorship, or a regular source of income to maintain the dogs we rescue and keep up with the vets bills. If you are unable to offer a home, how would you like to sponsor a puppy or kitten un-

til they are found a suitable home for a weekly fee? This could be a great idea for Christmas presents for animal-loving relatives and would help so much, especially with outstanding vets bills. You dont have to commit to more than one week at a time; just choose a puppy and we will keep you updated with all its progress and send regular updates. We are also r u n n i n g the T Cup/ C u p K a t sterilisation campaign. Would you consider giving up the price of a cup of tea or coffee and donating it to this worthy cause? The money will go towards looking after the puppies and trying to get more dogs sterilised so that there will be less puppies for all the charities to rescue and rehome in the future. Please visit our website for more details about what we are doing and how to donate at www.actin-spain.com Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ ACTINSpain?fref=ts https://www.facebook.com/ adoptaspanishrescuedog?fref=ts Some time before Christmas we will be doing something locally to raise awareness and hopefully have some fun. More details to follow, but hope to see you all there. From the ACTIN team, T Cup and CupKat

October arrives and the nights draw in. Soon the clocks will change and we will be heading to winter in Spain. Those of you spending your rst winter here will nd the nights do get long and chilly; often lovely in the daytime, but by 4pm its heating on and more nights in. It is not so tempting to go out once you get relaxed and warm! Spain is not 24/7 sunshine and you will need some form of heat and a good duvet! The pool goes out of use, the gardens need less water and food needs to be more comforting. Roasts come back on a Sunday and stews are often in the slow cooker. Although most of us do come here, in part, for the weather, winter does have some advantages. Prepare for it and enjoy it. TV NEWS The big issue of what will happen here in Spain to BBC and ITV when the new E satellite becomes operational and transmits these channels gets closer to being resolved. We need to have these scripts with the magazine editors by the 15th of each month the exact day the new satellite is due to launch!! (Readers on the Internet may get an update depending on progress). It will be 2 to 4 weeks being tested and positioned, when we may get some clues as to the new reception footprint, but it will not be nal until the channels are moved and we see the results down here probably one morning after an overnight swap. There may well be no changes, but equally there may be some

huge ones. Our 13 years experience in the business says signals will become weaker, but still available. Some of you with smaller dishes may have problems, but nothing is certain. When the changes do happen we will issue an email bulletin and update the website www.rainbowsats.org Those of you with HD boxes may have seen that Film4 has gone HD - not sure all the transmissions are in HD, but at least some are. We are still getting lots of enquires about using smart TVs or internet connectable digiboxes in Spain for UK services such as BBCiplayer, ITV player, 4demand, Lovelm, etc. When people try, they usually dont work. This is because the operator sees you have a foreign IP address and will not allow access. There are various ways around this isnt there always and we can supply a router that plugs into your router (not replace it) and then anything plugged into this new router will have a UK IP address and work on all sites, but as ever there are some restrictions. To work well, your Internet must be A1 with its own IP address. Most antenna based systems will not work. You really need a good 3 MB speed as the router will take 10% of the speed to operate and you will need 2 MB for any live TV viewing. Consistency is an absolute criteria, as any drops in speed, or even momentarily loss of internet, will create a fragmented viewing hick. When

you perform an internet speed test (www. speedtest.net works well) the gure the test comes up with is an average not a consistent speed. Experience has shown that the only way to be sure of a watchable picture is to try. This all may sound complicated, but you can ask us for details. I have a feeling many of you MAY be contacting us before the next regular newsletter asking how to get BBC and ITV back on your screens. IF that is the case, then please remember there are lots of you in the same boat and it is going to take a period of time to get any replacement equipment required and install it - patience by all is going to be needed! If only we knew what the outcome of the changes was going to be, we would be getting equipment in stock and more importantly, manufacturers would be making it, but as none of us know until it happens if it does then all upgrade installs will take some time to complete. Non-Residents and The Obligation To Appoint a Fiscal Legal Representative In Spain DO I NEED TO APPOINT A FISCAL REPRESENTATIVE IN SPAIN? It is not an obligation for EU non residents that own property in Spain to appoint a scal representative. However, non resident taxpayers must appoint a scal legal representative in the following cases: 1. You develop your business on a permanent basis providing professional works or services in Spain. 2. When you are allowed to deduct certain expenses from your taxable income. 3. You have your main residence in a country with no tax information exchange with Spain. (a double taxation agreement non exit) 4. When an organisation operating under the system of attribution of earnings established abroad carries out an economic activity in Spain, and all or part of said activity is carried out, in an ongoing or regular manner, in facilities or workplaces of any kind, or it trades in Spain through an agent authorised to contract, on behalf and in representation of the organisation. 5. When required by the Tax Ofce. However, distressing situations could happen and a lack of notication results in unexpected nes or even having your accounts or property seized. Then you will realise that the Tax Ofce has been after you for a while. By the time you discover this you may have had to deal with a large outstanding tax bill. It could then be too late for tax recovery.
In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

he only makes two attempts to deliver the notications. If you do not act upon this notication then you will be ofcially notied which means your notication will be ofcially published in the BOE (Boletn Ocial del Estado). This is a public paper published by the Government. After this the Tax Ofce is free to proceed with embargoes which might be applied to your bank account or even your property. If you are certain your scal address matches your home address in Spain and you are completely certain that you deal with all notications in a timely fashion, then you should be alright. However, for your peace of mind, you should consider appointing a scal representative who will assume the responsibility of receiving any formal communication and acting upon them with the Tax Ofce on your behalf within the given timescales. This is also applicable for scal residents in Spain. Even though they should easily receive notications, sometimes we nd that they dont. For example, you may have moved to a new property and forgotten to advise the Tax Ofce of your change of address or you receive your mail into a post box and the Tax Ofce ignores that, etc... Appointing a Fiscal Representative who represents you throughout the scal year will give you the benet of knowing that all communications from the Tax Ofce will be sent to your solicitors address. You then avoid any inconvenience caused by non-receipt or delay in receiving important correspondence. NON-RESIDENT TAX NON-RESIDENT TAX must be completed by all NON-RESIDENTS staying in the country for more than 183 days as a consequence of owning property in Spain. Many people who live abroad and own a Spanish property still ignore the responsibility to complete a Property Deemed In-

come Tax declaration. However, if they are caught by the Tax Authorities they will be liable to pay the last four years tax and probably a signicant ne. NON-RESIDENT TAX DEADLINES Non-Resident taxpayers buying property this year will have to complete and submit a deemed income Non-Resident Tax declaration before 31st December of the year following the purchase (2014) and thereafter on a yearly basis. If you bought your property before the year 2013, deadlines are as follow: If the property has not been rented out during the year the deadline is 31st December. If the property has been rented out and you are making prots a tax return has to be submitted on a quarterly basis before 20th April, July, October and January. In compliance with Article 24.6 Non-Resident Tax Law, only EU owners may deduct from incomes all the costs directly related to the property (ie repairs, insurances, loan interest or other allowable property expenses) If the property has been rented out and you are making losses the deadline to submit a nil declaration is between 1st and 20th January 2014. If the property is on the name of a Non-Resident Company the deadline is 31st January 2014.

The Spanish Tax Ofce sends notication of any outstanding taxes to your scal address in Spain. Notications have to be delivered by hand by the postman and

In compliance with the Double Taxation Agreement signed among Spain and other EU countries, interests paid in Spain on non-resident bank accounts, are not subject to pay taxes. The deadline to claim for a refund on tax withheld in the last four years is 20th January 2014. The Tax Authority knows that many NonResident property owners are not completing their annual tax returns and they are very likely to receive a letter regarding outstanding taxes. We advise you to contact a professional who can assess you regarding your tax obligations and liabilities avoiding unnecessary nes and penalties or embargoes being applied to your assets. Take professional advice for your peace of mind. Prevention is always better than cure. Alberto Alcaraz Legal & Financial Representative alberto@corralalcaraz.com Tel +34 968 078754

Illegal Cannabis Grown Police in the Murcia region have conscated 14,000 cannabis shrubs in one illegal plantation the highest number ever found in Spain in one place! They found the hash allotment in Esparragal, near Puerto Lumbreras, distributed between four huge greenhouses on a piece of land of around 5,000 square metres, which had been set up to look like a vegetable farm. It had gone unnoticed for a considerable length of time because it was in an isolated rural area surrounded by numerous farms with greenhouses, but a burglary at a neighbouring plantation leading to the arrest of four known and regular criminals led to police uncovering the massive drug-dealing and production racket.

Two Spaniards and three Moroccans, now in custody, are said to be expert professionals in marijuana-growing, having created near-scientic methods of cultivating plants with a manually-modied potency level of buds and rapid growth and increased bloom so that they were ready for harvest and cutting much more quickly, making them much more protable and the production chain more efcient. Paramount According to the Minister for Culture, Pedro Alberto Cruz, work should be starting on the land allocated for the Paramount Theme Park on the road from Alhama de Murcia towards Fuente Alamo. They are still waiting for the ofcial licences, but it is thought that the trees etc will be cleared from the land shortly. It will take until

2015 for the complex to be completed if work starts by the end of the year. Premursa are the company appointed to oversee the project and updates can be seen by going to Paramount Park Project. Restored Submarine in Cartagena Many people will have seen the famous submarine in Cartagena when visiting this historic city. Crown Prince Felipe opened a new exhibition room in the Naval Museum in Cartagena where the newly restored submarine is now on display. The full story of the submarine and the life of Isaac Peral can be seen and read, including the events leading up to the construction of the rst submarine. Go to Museo Naval Cartagena (www.cartagena.es) for more details and opening hours of the museum.

I was in the shower the other morning getting myself ready for my morning swim in the pool when I looked down and noticed that the plug hole had somehow become blocked in the shower tray. I could not believe how quickly it was lling up. This got me thinking of all the good water that most of us waste on a daily basis. I had a look on the good old tinternet, researching water usage and these are some of the facts that I found: * An average 10 minute shower uses up to 25 gallons of water. Friends have buckets in the shower to collect as much of the excess water as possible and this water is then used to water the plants on their balcony off the bedroom. * A bath can use in excess of 50 gallons. * Brushing your teeth with the tap running uses at least a gallon. Try to remember to turn the water off as you are actually brushing your teeth. * An average washing machine uses between 20 and 40 gallons per wash. This water often goes straight into the drains or cesspit, but can easily be diverted into a large water container. * A dishwasher uses between 2 and 5 gallons. This water can be diverted like that from the washing machine. * The big one is backwashing your swimming pool which can use up to 250 gallons. This list goes on and on and then it all goes down the plug hole. Obviously here in Spain water shortage is a huge problem and so it made sense to me to try and save the water that I have already paid for and used once wherever possible, thereby helping to keep costs down and making sure that my trees, owers and vegetables get loads of lovely water. I had recently been around a friends house and he was saving rain water from his guttering into an industrial water container. These tanks are huge and will hold 1000 litres of reclaimed water. I asked about availability and they can be bought from some ferreterias for around 65 each complete with tap etc. Another friend ordered mine from Levante Ferreteria in Moratalla and delivered them once we arrived in Spain for our summer break.

two thousand litres of free water for the trees. I must say I was slightly concerned about the chlorine in the pool and whether that would in any way affect my plants, once again research points to it not being a problem, chlorine reduces over time and I intend to join the tanks together with piping so that all the saved water will mix together therefore it should never be a problem. All in all this has taken a fair bit of effort to achieve, but I believe it will all be worth it. If you want to save water you do not have to go to the lengths that I have. There are many ways to save water and it really does make sense especially when your expensive plants and trees are struggling in the summer heat. I remember when I was young my mother always used to wash her dishes in a bowl, then put the water over the roses in the garden, she always maintained that the washing up liquid in the water helped to combat greeny. Just putting guttering up and diverting the water into water butts will give you free water to use on your plants around the garden and if you decide on a system like mine, you will be saving so much on your water bill by recycling as much water as possible. Joe part-time resident in Spain

I have now built a retaining wall alongside the garage (see photo below), which I lled with earth then concreted the top so that I will have a bit of height, therefore giving better pressure from the ve tanks that I have purchased.

Eventually I intend to divert all the used water from the house drawing a line at the waste from the toilets for obvious reasons, starting with the washing machine and pool backwash water. I also intend to put some guttering up around the house and garage so that I can also save the water that comes off the roof. When we had that huge rainfall the other week my pool lled up by over three inches! Normally this would have been lost, so this time I pumped it into the tanks and guess what! - nearly

Its National Curry Week from 7th October to 13th October and what better excuse to try a few simple and easy recipes to spice up your week? The main ingredients that make Curry, one of our favourite dishes are the spices. Once rare and expensive, spices are now some of the most useful ingredients available to everyone and work with any meat, sh or vegetable. Ladies Chatterbox group had its rst meeting this autumn on Thursday September 12th. Who do you think are? Our speaker, Jean explained how she produced her own family tree and helped a number of other people to research their family history. She really raised peoples interest in their history and there was a buzz in the room as people pondered who was in their tree. (We arent called Chatterbox for nothing!) A number of people discussed the process with Jean and I think we will see a group getting together to inspire each other to delve into the records to discover family members. In October our speaker is a local Spanish gentleman who will introduce us to the history and customs of the area we have chosen to live in. He is extremely knowledge-

able about the area as he was brought up locally. November will be an afternoon of Craft Demonstrations and our Christmas meeting will be a Festive Meal. We have a Trip to Lorca on November 6th to visit the embroidery museums with lunch afterwards. We will travel by train. Please note the change of date which we have made to accommodate members who were unable to join us in October. There will be a trip on January 4th to Visit the Belens and other celebrations before Three Kings in Murcia. Full details and an opportunity to book will be available at the October meeting. We have decided to organise trips outside of the monthly meeting to make sure that

we all have a chance to get together each month, even if we dont join a trip. A full membership card giving details of our current programme will be available at the October meeting for those who were away in September. Chatterbox SEW & SEW is a group for anyone who would like to meet with other sewing or craft work enthusiasts (not necessarily very experienced!) to work together, chat and enjoy a cuppa! We meet every Monday 2.30-4.30pm in the Cultural Centre. For more information ring Pat on 608 548 136. Ladies Chatterbox group meets on Camposol in the Cultural Centre on the 2nd Thursday of each month. If you would like further information, please contact Rosemary Scott on 619 575 463 or Chris Leiper on 968 199 418.

The Camposol D Sector Community Group will recommence their work in keeping D Sector clean and tidy, maintaining all the gardens they have created and taking on new projects as soon as the weather cools down a bit. We have a volunteer force that at its peak numbered around 30 people. We are now down to about 6 regulars and we desperately need more people to help with the work of keeping D Sector a nice place to live. Our pot hole team, who do great work keeping our roads free of holes and cracks that can damage our cars will be starting work again soon, but like the gardeners, they need more help.

If anyone wants to help either group please make contact with the team by our notice board on Friday mornings. Summer BBQ The evening of Saturday 24th August saw 124 guests from D Sector and other parts of Mazarrn enjoying their evening at The Club House on Camposol for the groups Summer BBQ. 13 tables were arranged on The Club House terrace with its beautiful views of the Golf Course with the mountains in the background. The weather was perfect for dining and dancing outside and the music was provided by Martin Ross, who is a favourite entertainer of our group and was great as usual. The BBQ was cooked by Richard, chef at The Club House. Richard cooked up a delicious combination of chicken, burger and sausage which was accompanied by a delicious salad and a jacket potato. The rafe was very well supported with the 15 prizes being beautifully presented by Maureen and Clive Gritt who give invaluable support to the group. Maureen also provided a prize for each table as an added bonus. Everyone enjoyed the evening which was a great success. Our thanks also go to The Club House and their staff who worked so hard for us.

Have we got news for you!!!!! Just when I thought it was safe to take a breather, our members bring forth another clutch of ideas, plans and projects for the Group to take on. Not that Im complaining (well, not much!). New Group Steering Committee (GSC) This group has already met, surveyed the communal spaces on Los Palacios and commenced work on the projects submitted. You may already be enjoying one of these initiatives close to YOUR villa! The Casita del Libros Pauline and the team keep the community occupied with reading matter and a friendly chat swapping useful information. You have heard the phrase the woman behind the man, but it is denitely a reverse situation when setting up and putting away the 100s of books each Friday morning. There is a team of men behind the woman and Pauline has them rmly under control.

All this activity has to be funded and accounted for and our Treasurer Beryl is kept extremely busy due to the very generous donations which the community is kind enough to make. These very valuable resources must be used wisely and accounted for. Besides our Members who get on with the nitty gritty (I mean actual gardening), we have a very lively Vice Chairman in the shape of Harry, who is just brimming with ideas. We are looking for additional volunteers to join our Events Team so that we can keep up with Harry and the great ideas that the rest of the Team produce.

You will see in the before & after photos an example of how much better Los Palacios can look after a visit from one of our Teams. Let us know if you would like to be part of the improvements. Dare I mention the bucket collections? Thanks to those who give up their Thursday mornings (shaking their buckets) in order to fund our projects and help the community. We now have regular donators each week who we feel have become friends. Many thanks once again to all those who give us help and support.

Do you have time on your hands and would like to help setting up the Casita del Libros on Friday mornings, or lend a hand with our events organisation? The Chairman and I would like to hear from you. Flamenco Show at Oscars Bar, Camposol B This event was held at on Saturday 24th August to raise money for FAST (First Aid Support Team) on Camposol. Every lady was presented with a beautiful red carnation by Flamenco dressed young girls. The audience was entertained by a very well known and extremely popular group, David Andreu who captivated the audience totally from start to nish.

and his staff, including Toni, Charmaine, Adam and Scotty who worked hard, providing table service for both food and drinks all evening. The money raised totalled 530. Pauline Tolley also donated 60 and Derek Leech gave FAST the contents from his piggy bank, totalling 3.27. FAST are extremely grateful to everyone who attended the evening and to the FAST members who worked so hard to help make this such an enjoyable event. Thanks also to those who give their support, time and donations to this voluntary service for residents and holidaymakers on Camposol. FAST Demonstration On Thursday 12th September the Ladies Circle who meet each week at the Playa Grande Hotel in Puerto de Mazarrn, were given a Demonstration by FAST. Gerry Bradshaw, President of FAST and Head Trainer, accompanied by Helen Macmillan, Secretary, Responder and Trainer of FAST gave a demonstration and talk on carrying out CPR on adults, children and babies; advice on what to do if someone was choking and how to place a person into the recovery position. The main idea of the demonstration was to show that it was not difcult to carry out emergency rst aid and the message was It is always better to try to do something rather than walk past or stand by and do nothing and to carry out the best you can do at that particular time. The Ladies were invited to practise on the three sizes of manikins and were shown the difference in carrying out rescue breaths on an adult as against a boy and a baby. To practise on the apparatus for assisting someone choking was also useful. Gerry informed the audience that it is important to remember the signs of a stroke FAST! F for Face A for Arms

S for Speech T for Time T is very important to remember - note when the stroke rst started which is extremely important! The feedback from the demonstration was received immediate comments and thanks from the Ladies Circle and followed up with emails and helpful ideas for future fundraising. We would like to thank the Ladies for their generous donation of 58.15 which will help us to continue helping other people and is much appreciated! On Saturday 14th September, The Club House, Club de Golf Camposol was the setting for the inaugural MABS Open Golf Competition sponsored by Premier Pension Solutions, TAM Asset Management and Citron al Mazarrn,

along with a host of other local businesses and groups. More than 60 keen golfers from across the region and UK teed off in the lovely September sunshine for what was to become a great day. With the opportunity to win a fantastic 10,000 for anyone who managed to achieve a Hole in One, the competition was erce but friendly. Sadly no-one was lucky enough to win it this time round. Competition Winners: John Erskin in the Mens overall Competition Mary Armitage taking the Ladies overall Competition Both received a trophy and a full Ham. The inaugural meeting of the Camposol Camera Club got off to a very successful start when 12 potential members turned up. The members discussed lots of things amongst which were how the club should go forward. We have a wide range of interests in photography and members have everything from simple digital cameras to sophisticated DSLRSs, but we all agreed that the nal photograph is what matters. Members with less experience are looking forward to club discussions on different camera settings etc. We also discussed where we could go on club outings to take photos; places as varied as the Sierra Espuas, the Mazarrn Mines, Cartagena and the Torrevieja Salt Lakes were put forward as potential

club visits. We have set up a Face Book site, The Camposol Camera Club which new members can join. We have agreed to meet at The Club House, Camposol C meeting room on the third Wednesday of each month at 4pm. At our next meeting, members are going to bring 4 photographs on a memory stick of Spain, good or bad and they will be discussed and viewed on The Club House TV. When PALS organise holidays we always try to give value for money and we believe we are competitive. We also always make sure that our accommodation is near to the city centres we visit or make sure that transport is readily available. If you fancy a last minute break, call immediately to see if there are any seats left on the second coach to the Basque region. 280 full board, all excursions included 285. The coach leaves on 6th October, so be quick. The Benidorm three nights trip is oversubscribed, but put you name onto our mailing list so that you do not miss out on anything we are doing. PALS April trip to Andalucia provides hotels at half board adjacent to the most places of interest in each town, the mosque in Cordoda, the city centre of Sevilla and in front of the Alhambra in Granada. Throw in a visit to Ronda and the White villages and the price of 320 per person is remarkable. Leaving on 27th April, the tickets are selling well and we will only have one coach. PALS are delighted to have been involved in the production of the CAF Concerts which raised the bulk of the money for the new ambulance delivered in April at a cost of 57500. We would thank everybody involved in the collection of money, in particular the Costa Clida Radio Station and the Lions and all the other organisations and people who donated money and prizes throughout the 7 years of the ambulance project. The CAF Concerts will continue with another major project in mind. Each year we celebrate our Annual Dinner Dance on 8th December at the Costa Hotel, Mazarrn because of its great food and masses of wine and beer. This year, again by popular request, The John Lindo Trio will provide the music and its a fun evening; a chance to dress up and let your hair down for 29.50 per person. Coaches from Camposol at 7pp depending on demand.

PALS are looking to organise a trip to La Bastida, a Totana treasure and one of the most important prehistoric archaeological excavations in Europe, followed by a meal in La Rata. PALS might go back to Segovia and Salamanca or Valencia with a cruise to the eastern Mediterranean. We rely on our supporters to advise which they would prefer. PALS meet at the Trevi Bar each Saturday 11am-1.30pm and Puerto de Mazarrn each Wednesday 1-3pm, or call 626 460 465 or visit www.pals.sm4.4biz FORGET-ME-NOT Next meeting is 14th October at the Cultural Centre, Camposol. We are trying to help those whose lives are curtailed through the constant caring for those with long term or incurable illnesses. At this meeting we hope to meet those who are affected, so please come along for an hour. Bring your loved one if you can, but your input into the requirements of Respite Care in the Mazarrn area is most important. If you dont tell us what is needed, we might be not helping in the way we want. FORGET-ME-NOT is a coming together of the various charities, organisations, associations and others to try to alleviate the problems where we can. Our aims are shown in our proposed charter. 1 Primarily to investigate the needs for respite care in the general Mazarrn, Murcia area. 2 To promote goodwill among various charities, churches organisations and others who are concerned about the problems associated with respite care.

To seek ways to alleviate stress placed upon the spouse, family or friends for whom caring becomes a 24hr labour of love. To identify those who are in need of relief from the burden of such care. To seek out establishments, organisations, volunteers and others that can provide a break from the aficted whilst alternative care is provided. The problem is mainly, but not exclusively, aimed to assist those whose partners are suffering from Alzheimers, dementia or other long-term incurable illnesses or diseases. To supplement the work, without prejudice, of those organisations that provide medical and emotional support within their own constitutions, charters or etiquettes. To create funding for the provision of such care as may be required on an individual basis. Any such expenditure to be subject to approval by a small team, to be appointed, and whose membership shall be regularly reviewed. To raise money for the above by means of jointly supported events, and through donations. To ensure that there is no conict between the fund raising requirements and activities of FORGET-ME-NOT and those organisations that support this initiative. To widen the awareness of the increasing nature of the problem of Respite Care through regular media exposure such as radio, television, newspapers, periodicals and leaets.

Country Music Comes To Camposol We had another enjoyable night on 6th September we had 2 new names to entertain us. The live music was provided by Dave C, who provided us with 2 sets primarily of traditional country with a denite leaning towards Johny Cash and Gary Lafferty, a name well known in Line Dancing circles. He taught two line dances which had everyone on the oor and a couples dance was taught by Tom and Helen. It was a busy night and Dave C reduced his normal fee, as he was aware that this is a new club and it was his way of helping us get established. Thank you for that Dave.

We meet on the 1st Friday of each month in The Club House, Camposol, starting at 7.45pm. From then until 9pm, when the live music starts, we play requests, teach a Line Dance and then a couples dance. Food is available at affordable prices. Our next night is Friday 4th October, when we are looking forward to Christine entertaining us. We consider that those who come along on a regular basis should have a substantial say in how the club is run, so a General Meeting (our 1st) will be held in the back room of on Sunday 27th October at 5pm.

Immediately before that on Oct 27th from 2pm to 5pm, a Country Music Sunday Lunch has been arranged. The sound equipment we now own will be in operation so that we can listen/dance to our favourite music. In addition, the Camposol Guitar Club will come along and give us a few songs. There is no charge for this; you only have to pay for your meal at 9 for 2 courses /12 for 3 courses. Only a few places still available. Like to know more? Lesson 2 - Im going to and negatives Lets start with some sentences which revise what we learnt in the previous article. They can all build together very simply, by combining I words (quiero I want; necesito I need; puedo I can) with verbs in their basic, or innitive form, that is the form that ends in ar,-er or ir. Quiero trabajar - I want to work. Necesito cocinar - I need to cook. Puedo bailar - I can dance. Necesito comer tres veces al da - I need to eat three times a day. Quiero jugar otra vez - I want to play again. Puedo abrir la puerta - I can open the door. Now we are going to introduce another I expression, which works in exactly the same way as the ones we have already seen. This time it consists of two words - Voy a - it means Im going to. I am going to is rather a long expression in English, but it cannot be translated word for word into Spanish. We need to think about the concept it expresses, which is related to my intention to do something. When we want to express our intention in Spanish, these are the two words we should use Voy a, and we then follow them with any innitive verb in just the same way as before. For example: Voy a cocinar - Im going to cook. Voy a abrir - Im going to open. One of the most important keys to learning

Spanish is to realize that we cannot translate word for word. This is the big mistake that many people make. Most of our confusion about Spanish comes from our insistence on trying to translate literally all the time when it is the idea behind the words which is the important thing. The Spanish use fewer words than English to express the same ideas, which is amazing in itself when you think how much they like speaking. Here are some more sentences for you to translate into English. This time I will put the answers at the end of the article. Quiero bailar contigo. Puedo trabajar maana. Voy a comer ahora. Necesito aprender Espaol. Now were going to look at something new, which we can do without needing to learn any new words at all. This just shows how easy basic Spanish really is. If you put the word no in front of any of your new sentences, you instantly make them negative. This may not sound like a big deal, but it is remarkably simple and much easier than English. For example: Voy a cocinar - Im going to cook. No voy a cocinar - Im not going to cook. Necesito cambiar dinero - I need to change money. No necesito cambiar dinero - I dont need to change money. Quiero volver a inglaterra I want to go back to England. No quiero volver a Inglaterra - I dont want to go back to England. Puedo dormir aqu I can sleep here. No puedo dormir aqu - I cant sleep here. Take a second to look at the way these negative forms are made in English. Im not going to, I dont need to and I cant. Imagine being a foreigner trying to learn English; you have to learn lots of different

ways of making negatives, whereas in Spanish you only ever have to put no in front of the verb youve made your sentence negative. You see I told you it was easy! Now here are the answers to the sentences above: Quiero bailar contigo - I want to dance with you. (You never know when this phrase might come in handy!) Puedo trabajar maana - I can work tomorrow. (Anathema to some people, but a few of us still have to do it!) Voy a comer ahora - I am going to eat now. (We could also translate this as Im going to have lunch now as the Spanish also use comer to refer to having their big midday meal.) Necesito aprender Espaol - I need to learn Spanish. (You cant argue with that really and it could be useful when you want to encourage a Spanish person to actually speak to you in Spanish rather than English which tends to happen more and more). Here are some sentences to think about. This time youre going to translate four short sentences from English into Spanish. The basic structures are exactly as weve learnt them so far there are no tricks and the answers will appear next month! I dont want to speak English. Im not going to open the door. I cant cook very well. I need to work a little. Jane Cronins Step by Step Spanish articles are now available as e-books at www.janecronin.eu where you can also obtain Janes brand new Step by Step Internet Spanish course.

Brighten Up Spain With Colourful Window Boxes by Dick Handscombe, gardener and gardening author living in Spain for 25 years.

What Types Of Window Boxes Are Available? Every year new and improved designs of terracotta, glass bre, ceramic and plastic window boxes appear. Some have a self-watering reservoir that holds sufcient water for several weeks. This is very useful when you expect to be away for holidays or short breaks. If you are planting trailing plants, these will soon cover the front sides of the boxes, so save money and dont invest unnecessarily in fancy designs. What Can Be Planted In Window Boxes? The most reliable owering plants are as follows: All year round: Zonal and trailing geraniums/pelargoniums, except in the heavy frost/ snow belt where they need to be put in a cold frame or a greenhouse for the winter. Spring, summer and autumn: Trailing petunias, portulacas, zonal and trailing geraniums/pelargoniums, carnations, felicia /agathaea and in the shade, fuchsias and busy lizzies. Spring: Dwarf trailing sweet peas, verbena and freesias. Autumn and winter: Heathers and pansies, especially above the frost line. Winter: Cyclamens, poinsettias, stocks and bulbs such as hyacinths and daffodils. Colour can also be provided by the fruit and foliage of plants. Fruits the fruits on mock pepper and mini pomegranate plants can look very attractive during the autumn once annuals are past their best. Foliage - begonias, spider plant, variegated ivies, herbs on the widow sill outside the kitchen - and dwarf conifers especially in semi-shaded situations. Vegetables - plants like trailing tomatoes, dwarf peppers, collections of edible herbs and cut and come again salad leaves are all possible. If you are an absentee gardener, restrict your window boxes to trailing geraniums/pelargoniums and drought resistant succulents and cacti. If your visits are very infrequent, we suggest you replant your window boxes as soon as you arrive for a stay and let them die off when you leave. In this case remove the boxes from your window sill or balcony to an invisible place while you are away. Window Boxes Do Need Watering! 1. The soil in window boxes needs to be kept constantly damp to get the best out of your plants. We suggest that you achieve this by ensuring that you ll the window box with a rich waterretaining but free-draining compost. Being waterlogged can be as bad as being too dry. Our solution is to use a 5:5:1 mix of good soil, homemade compost and sharp sand with a little water-retaining gel mixed into the bottom half of the compost.

1.

Water twice a week in the spring and once a week in the autumn and winter. In the summer you will need to increase watering. Window boxes in full sun may well need watering every day. Plant less thirsty plants. Mulch the top of the compost with volcanic ash, grit, or coloured stone chippings.

1. 1.

Throughout Spain, window boxes are used to brighten up the facades of some otherwise drab houses and apartment blocks, but many beach-front apartment blocks, villages, towns and urbanisations remain bland even though window boxes are easy and inexpensive to install. Well planted, they can be colourful throughout the year with the best looking like mini-gardens and tall houses and apartment blocks can be made to look like a Hanging Gardens of Babylon. With a community cooperation and spirit, tiers of window boxes on four storey village houses and even taller apartment blocks can create an amazing effect to the benet of residents and passersby, even during the winter months when most individual and communal gardens are not at their best . Why Have Window Boxes? Window boxes serve several purposes. 1. To brighten up the outlook from windows and doors onto balconies and terraces. To provide a screen from prying eyes. To brighten up the appearance of a dwelling from outside, both from the garden and from the street. We have them on the north and west sides of the house. The other sides are full of colour without window boxes and in our microclimate, south facing window boxes would need watering daily during June, July and August. To give the appearance that the house or apartment is lived in. Walk past a few blocks of apartments, down a few traditional village streets or through a few estates and you will notice that the properties with window boxes stand out, especially if well looked after; unfortunately also if they are rarely tended. To brighten up dull courtyards by hanging boxes on the walls or standing on low walls. To brighten up the semi-shade under large trees, perhaps where you eat or siesta, by hanging window boxes directly from boughs or supported on hanging shelves. To create a vertical vegetable garden with mini-varieties in tiers of window boxes xed to a terrace wall or the security doors opening onto an open uncovered terrace.

Feeding Remember that the roots of plants in window boxes have a relatively limited amount of soil in which to search for nutrients for growth and ower production. We suggest that you take a three stage approach to satisfying their needs. As already mentioned, ensure that you ll window boxes with a rich compost mix, then feed regularly; monthly in the autumn and winter and weekly in the spring and summer. A weak feed at this frequency is better than a strong feed at less frequent intervals to achieve a steady rather than stop-go development of the plants. Ensure that you use a balanced feed and not one too high in nitrogen. The latter can stimulate green growth in preference to ower buds and long lasting owers. Also, fast growing green growth can be eshy and weak, therefore susceptible to disease and pests. Change the compost every second winter. Pruning and Deadheading. Flowering plants will ower more continuously and for longer if you deadhead regularly. Also remove all dead leaves and ends as soon as they appear, to prevent the occurrence of fungal diseases. Naturally trim to shape to improve the overall appearance of your boxes, but dont over trim cascading plants such as trailing petunias and geraniums. If you are on the front line of apartments and your window boxes get burnt by salt spray during heavy storms or gales, wash the plants copiously with water as soon as possible and remove any branches that become burnt as soon as damage appears.

My Dog Is Getting Old Aging is something inherent to all living beings. Everyone and every living thing is born with a biological clock marking our genome and depending on the environmental characteristics, life habits and random factors, that clock will get stopped sooner or later.

very common to nd some couples who had a baby at the same time they had a puppy at home and they have been able to see how their children were growing up at the same time their pet was getting old, so when their children nish primary education, their dogs are very old. With aging, there is a gradual deterioration of the delicate interrelations of the body systems which predisposes the animal to develop some acquired diseases. In my experience after many years practising small sized animals medicine is that many owners visit the clinic with their pets when some of these disorders related to aging are advanced and we can do practically nothing, possibly because they had not noticed anything in advance. There are a number of pathologies related to aging, that if they are detected early enough, we can possibly act and try to reduce their effects and give quality and even an extension of life to the animal. Some diseases such as arthritis, heart and kidneys problems, cataracts, diabetes, tooth calculi and periodontal illnesses, prostate in males, different endocrine pathologies etc can be detected early and receive treatment to reduce their advancement. This is why it is important for the owner to assume the age of their animal and to adapt food and life habits to its needs. In the same way, it is very

important to have complete tests to detect these problems. At our clinic in Puerto de Mazarrn, we offer for example, a test to for older pets which needs two hours per animal and consists of a complete anamnesis, examination with machines and systems, blood and urine tests, ECG, thorax and abdomen radiographies and abdominal scan for only 60. These tests will show any abnormalities which can then be treated, possibly giving your pet a better life in its later years. Although aging is an irreversible process, delaying this and providing your dog with a suitable quality of life is in our hands. In the same way as we have increased human life expectancy over the last decades, something similar has happened for our cats and dogs, although it is true that many owners are not still able to notice the signs and disorders due to aging (probably because they cannot see it for themselves). We recommend visiting the vet to make examinations from 7 years of age in big sized dogs and from 9 years in small sized ones. Obviously animals cannot speak for themselves, but having these tests will possibly give your pet a few extra years of enjoyment for them and you. Article written in conjunction with Paco, Clinica Veterinaria, Puerto de Mazarrn

It is a fact that time passes by differently for us than our pet animals. In general, it is said that one human year is equal to 7 years in our dogs. However, this is something inexact since we have to consider that small sized breeds live longer than big or giant sized ones. For example, 12 years for a small dog would be equal to 62 human years, while that same age for a big or giant sized dog would be similar to 85 or 90 human years. 12 or 13 years is just one period in our lives, but unfortunately this usually is the sole existence of our pets. At the time of writing, the walking season has not yet started. We will be have had our rst walk on 21st September, closely followed by another on 30th September and then another we have 3 walks programmed for October. However, the WARM members in the Northwest of Murcia have had reason to celebrate. Two of our members met each other through the group a few years ago and on 8th September we joined them at a wonderful evening party to celebration their

marriage. Andrea from Moratalla was one of the rst members of WARM who started walking with the group in 2005. Rob joined the group some years later and eventually plucked up courage to ask Andrea out on a dinner date, which has resulted in them becoming a very happy couple. I am sure all the members of WARM would want to wish Andrea and Rob much love and happiness in their future life together. Email warm2005@gmail.com for full details of all walks.

MARA have had a busy summer with puppies being left at our compound for us to nd and puppies being rescued from dustbins. All but 3 of the 13 puppies have now found foster care or forever homes.

Our re-homing programme continues with a success for Oly the pointer who had been with us for 17 months and thanks to the feature in this magazine she has now gone to live in her forever home in Alcoy. We still have a number of dogs looking for the permanent homes, so if you are thinking of adopting a dog and would like to visit our kennels, please contact us for more information. You can also visit our charity shop in Mula and meet some of the volunteers who regularly give up their time to help us. We are always looking for items to sell in our shop, so if you have anything to donate, please contact us, or visit our Facebook page MARA Mula for more information. Our dogs this month are Freddy and Mindy. Freddy is a very lovable medium size

mixed breed dog. He loves to play and loves a cuddle and has the personality of a best friend. He is castrated and has all of his inoculations.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Mindy, who is a small white and black Braco type, is also very loving and loyal. She has been in our kennels for almost 14 months now. She loves to be taken for walk, but craves love from her human carers. She would make a good companion for someone. If you are interested in either of these dogs, or would like to visit our kennels, please contact Keith on 628 811 188 or Marion on 628 811 187 for more information.

We had a good time at the Rhythm & Joy Concert and as I write we are in the process of preparing for our next get together which I seemed to have dubbed Going it Alone, but are we? It is proving to be an extremely frustrating week. As we wont have Ken and Carol with us (hence the name) that also means no technical support. Despite all our good intentions, because of our out of date equipment, (we neither have an up-to-date television or a projector) it would appear we are ghting a losing battle, or are we? Maybe God is saying to us, actually you dont need all this technology. I was here sharing fellowship long before technology arrived and I will never leave you or forsake you. Which means then we arent going it alone and perhaps we have become dependent on the wrong things. Thats not to say we wouldnt like to have the use of technology, but I guess its about getting our priorities straight and our get-together is about fellowship. It represents the relationship between ourselves and God and also amongst all believers. Such relationships are not possible through human achievements or technology. It is God that transforms Christians and makes fellowship possible, so even though we wont have the technology on Sunday, we wont be Going it Alone. God will be present and there will be fellowship. Someone once told us you cant be a Christian on your own. To a degree I think they were right. When very young, our eldest granddaughter would tell us we must share, whilst tucking under her arm out of our sight, whatever it was she didnt want to share. Yes, I smile when I remember the incident. We have an opportunity to share fellowship, so lets grasp it and share it.

Now that the almonds have been harvested, there is a bit of a lull in the huerta until the picking of the olives in December and January. Luckily most of the almonds were picked without too much disruption from the heavy storms towards the end of September. Calasparra suffered badly when they had some of the heaviest rain on record during two thunder storms with the roads ending up like rivers and cars being washed down the streets. Many properties were ooded twice in as many weeks. The Wine Festival in Bullas will be well under way by the beginning of October, although the harvest of the grapes is later than usual due to the wet weather earlier in the year. On 5th October at 10am there is a full wine tour, including a visit to the wine museum, the local vineyard, wine tasting and lunch with a tour of the bodega and archaeological site in the afternoon. Book at the Town Hall - 20. The Artisan Market on 6th October will be dedicated to the towns wine industry with demonstrations of grape treading and of course tasting of the new wines. You can also visit the house of Don Pepe with a guided tour for 5. These tours are arranged for 11am, 12pm and 1pm. Moratalla, like many towns in Spain has once again admitted that they have no money. The Mayor, Antonio Garcia says that many Council workers have not been paid since June, but that much of the debt was inherited from the previous incumbents. There have been no esta lights in the town for a couple of years and since making headlines in the international papers in 2011 the Council has tried hard to reduce their costs. Cehegn Scene October brings the return of the artisan market El Mesoncico until next June. We celebrate the market the last Sunday of the month in Plaza del Castillo at the heart of the old town from 10am-3pm. You will

nd more than 50 craftsmen of the area with stalls displaying products such as cured meats, hams, pottery, cakes, wines, cheeses, etc. Each of the monthly markets has a different theme showing traditional and local crafts. You will be able to taste and enjoy the foods and products most typical to this area. On 27th October the theme will be related to the local wine with many new activities. Free parking is available at the Marble Technology Centre in Carretera Murcia, approached from the West. A free bus service will operate to the market place every 20 minutes. The Archaeological Site of Begastri is opened for visitors on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am-2pm. You can see a video presentation followed by a guided tour to see the remains of the Iberian culture before the IV century B.C. The Ecological Park Will Be Closed Until Further Notice Any further enquiries please contact the New Cehegin Tourist Ofce located in front of the Town Hall on 968 723 550 or visit our tourist website www.turismocehegin.es Santiago Leo Cehegin Tourist Ofce Walking Calasparra The new Paso a Paso municipal organised walking season starts in the area with the traditional pilgrimage to the top of San Miguel in Calasparra. Cehegin With a variety of landscapes including woods, mountains, hills, sloping valleys, scrubland and streams, these natural habitats host ora and fauna of special interest which provide a priceless tourist and educational resource. Free walks take place on the last Saturday of each month.

They are designed for people of all ages who enjoy hiking at fairly easy levels which makes them accessible for the whole family. Starting at 9m, the walks are between 4 and 9km and take 2 to 3 hours. One of the things that makes Cehegn famous is its wines and the best way to nd out all about that world is to see one of the most famous vineries in the area, Bodegas Begastri on 26th October. Afterwards we will visit La Fuente Capel and the Huerta. The walk is 8km and will take about 4 hours with an average incline of 3,9%-4,6%. Now is the ideal time to visit some of the more touristy parts of the Costa Clida with most of the visitors having returned to their towns and cities. One of the most beautiful coastal areas is Mazarrn, which is easily reached by good motorways. The bay of Puerto de Mazarrn has a stunning sandy beach with a good variety of bars and restaurants. If you take the road out towards La Azohia, you will nd the guns at Cabo Tioso. These are well worth a visit and the views out across the sea are breath-taking. Whilst in the area, take a look at the Costa Clida Menu del Dia Guide in this months magazine. There is a huge choice of restaurants offering good quality food at very reasonable prices. One of the best in the area is at La Chara Restaurant, in Isla Plana, just east of Mazarrn on the way to Cabo Tioso. The menu is only 9 and the variety and quality of the food and service is superb. You can either sit outside overlooking the sea, or inside in the restaurant, completing your day out to the coast.

Dear Editor An Important Announcement from Furniture Plus It has come to our attention that some people have been sold furniture packages and items of furniture believing them to have been supplied by Furniture Plus in the rst half of last year and sold by a person claiming to be from Furniture Plus. If you are one of these people, please be aware that if you did not buy your furniture from the Furniture Plus showroom above Mercadona in Puerto de Mazarrn and you do not have a Furniture Plus written receipt, it was not supplied by us. It was from a bogus supplier who probably visited you at home with catalogues and supplied you from their personal stock. We have invested heavily in a 10,000 square foot showroom and display stock so that you can Try before you buy and have never operated high pressure home catalogue sales techniques. If you feel you may be affected by this please contact us at Furniture Plus so we can continue to investigate who it was that hoodwinked our potential customers and in so doing put at risk our cherished and hard won reputation for quality and service. Thank you for taking time to read this Roy and Christine Furniture Plus Dear Editor To all Culture Vultures I am hoping to be able to organise small coach trips to Murcia and Cartagena perhaps once a month, to visit the theatre for concerts and ballet. Pick-up points would be: Atalaya, Lidl in Mazarrn and Camposol. We would leave early enough to have supper close to the theatre before the performance starts.

If you would be interested in joining and having a list of possible concerts etc. please contact me, Annie Busch at culturevultures.mazarron@gmail.com or by phone on 968 599 031 Dear Editor Would like to tell your readers about a nice lunch we had at one of your advertisers, Bistro Ratatouille in Mazarrn Port when over from the UK. Wed heard it was under new management so thought wed sample their Sunday lunch. First impressions was how spotlessly clean it was; the oors were sparkling and the tables pristine always a good sign. The staff are polite and friendly and cant do enough for you, even asking if we had enough of everything on the plate. There was a good choice of starters, main courses and desserts and it was all nicely presented and beautifully cooked. The price even included a drink; an amazing lunch for 10. Well denitely be returning on our next visit. Glyn Grifths, Berkshire Dear Editor Now that we are edging towards the end of the year, the boys at Decklid Auto Services are preparing to raise more money for PALS. Last year we managed to raise 930 towards the funds collected by PALS through the generosity of all our customers and friends. This year we would like to try and beat that amount, so we are once again asking you all if you would be kind enough to sponsor us for the New Years Day Swim, so if you are passing our workshop in Mazarrn and have a few pennies to spare, please call in and put your name on the sponsor form at the desk so that we can help PALS to continue with their great work they do for the community. Dave and Diane Dear Editor Thank you so very much for your help and promotion for The Lee Rigby Concert at the Aguilas Resort Hotel. This resulted in

the event being SOLD OUT and we had such a good response from The Costa Clida Chronicle that a guy even rang to offer fantastic prizes for an auction. A total of 2350 was made on the night which is going to The Fusilier Aid Society. The cheque was received on their behalf by 85 year old retired Fusilier and Drummer John Blaney who has served in the same Regiment as Lee.

The entertainment was exceptional with Tony Justice performing alone and also as part of Rough Justice and Stu Blandamer and Martin Ross who form The Beagles. All acts received standing ovations and the pinnacle of the evening was an impromptu performance by all 4 artistes. The atmosphere was electric. What a brilliant night! Again thank you for your help. Anne Blandford Dear Editor This is a thank you letter to two local rms. Firstly, to James and Adam from TJ Elecricals, who called at our house on a courtesy call to increase the signal strength of the TV. As soon as James walked in, he smelt gas. He then took our electric oven out (we have a gas hob) and told Adam to turn off the gas bottle as the smell was so strong. He told us to get hold of Kevin from CHM and within an hour he was at our house and found a very bad gas leak under the hob and near lots of electric points. Kevin sorted it in no time and only charged a nominal amount, saying you are very lucky to be alive. He showed me the leak by using old fashioned methods, which worked! My wife and I would sincerely like to thank with all our hearts James, Adam and Kevin. Prior to James smelling gas, my wife had headaches for a few weeks and our two little dogs slept virtually all day. We had put it down to the summer weather. My wife is now much better and the dogs are dashing about all day again. Once again people, thank you. John and Zoe

Cave Walk - Friday 25th October Meet 10.30am at El Berro car park opposite Camping Sierra Espua and well car share to the start of our easy, social, non-sporty, 3 hour walk through the pine-clad mountains. There are stunning views and we can also have a look at some caves all very easy, no caving whatsoever involved - but

just wear sturdy supportive non-slip footwear for some rubbly slopes and paths. Bring water to sip, binoculars and cameras to make the most of spectacular views and chances of seeing wildlife such as eagles and arrui, plus possible wild boar at the restaurant later on. We never rush anyone and believe in admiring the views and having time to chat without getting puffed out. We wait for slower people and make sure theyre OK - the focus of NEST walks is a social getting together, meeting new people and making new friends. Were not a sporty walking group! We will eat in an authentic Spanish restaurant (optional) in a beautiful spot where we can sometimes see wild boar. The walk itself is 5 and the optional meal is 9, which is a very sociable high spot of the day! Please book in advance (with your full

names and a Spanish contact tel no) and await conrmation to know youre booked in as places are limited, so make sure you book early to get a place. Let me know if you would like to join a photography group re-starting soon.

3 + 3 is an album released in August 1973 by The Isley Brothers on the Epic record label. It was their rst album for the label and heralded a golden period for the group. Originally The Isley Brothers were a 3 piece trio consisting of brothers Kelly, Rudolph and Ronald. Starting out as a Doo Wop band they signed for Tamla Motown in the 60s and had hits such as This Old Heart of Mine and Behind the Painted Smile. For this new venture they decided to include younger brothers Ernie and Marvin and also bought in family member Chris Jasper; hence the title 3 + 3. The album was recorded at the Record Plant Studio in Los Angeles and was produced by Ronald and Rudolph. Coincidently, Stevie Wonder was recording his Innervisons album at the same time and being friends from their Motown days, added snippets of vocals to each others albums (although neither credit each other.) 3 + 3 is regarded as the start of a golden period for The Isley Brothers, the fusion of soul, funk and rock producing a massive run of not only commercially, but critically successful hit singles. The blend of wailing guitar riffs, water tight harmonies and thumping beats allied to the use of an ARP Synthesizer, (also used by Stevie Wonder on Innervisions ) still to this day makes 3 + 3 a work of musical genius. The album is a collection of old songs and covers. They took their old R & B hit Whose That Lady and transformed the song into a hard rocking psychedelic soul classic. Ernie Isleys scorching guitar solo appealed

not only to soul fans, but rock fans also. The album is a perfect balance of fast, medium and slow songs. The track Summer Breeze has become an all time classic. There are two cover tracks on the album Listen to the Music originally done by The Doobie Brothers and the James Taylor penned Dont Let Me be Lonely Tonight, soul funk with a punch such as What it Comes Down To and Sunshine, mid-range like If You Were There and the hauntingly beautiful ballads You Walk Your Way and Highways of My Life. In my own humble opinion 3 + 3 is the best collection of tracks ever put on a piece of vinyl and if you like the Isleys Brothers, but have not got any of their albums, this is the one to get. You will listen and treasure it for many years to come. I know I have! You can listen to Mark Davies on Costa Clida Radio on Nite Express on Mon and Wed 7-9pm and on Friday evenings on Clida Rocks 7-9pm.

August 29th saw the Old Guard return to Camposol Golf after many years absence to enjoy the hospitality of the new management. The course is beginning to respond to all the effort and hard work of the new team and will soon live up to its true potential.

with our friends From Los Amigos to play for the annual trophy which has been won so far by the lads from LAGS. On this occasion however, the Stapleford scores achieved by FOGS were enough to take the cup and the 2013 title for the rst time. The Overall Winner on the Old Guard score sheet was Paul Western with an impressive score of 36 points with Dave Simpson close behind with 31 points. This score was enough to give Dave rst place in Division One with Peter Court coming second with 29 points. In Division Two, Barry Martin was well out in front with 28 points with Dave Gray following up second with 24 points. Division Three was easily won by that man Paul with his 36 points and Howard Wright was ahead of the rest of Division Three with 26 points for second place.

Dyball with 16 points after a long absence through illness - good to see him back. Should anyone wish to join FOGS, or just play as a guest, please contact Dave on 868 082 013. Our next game is at Lorca on October 31st.

AD Sucina V Sporting Mazarrn, Camposol 0-1 September 15th 2013 was the rst ofcial match for Sporting Mazarrn Camposol. After 10 weeks of preparation with various ups & downs, the players were ready.
In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

The captain Juan put the ball down at the far post, where Calum Rowling laid the ball back to the incoming Boudia Tirigou. He remained calm and shot the only goal of the match. In the second half, Sporting Mazarrn got a lot of space. This should have been better played out, but neither Moha nor Abdel could take advantage of the space that Sucina gave away. The defence of Sporting Mazarrn stood like a rock and they gave nothing away. Captain Juan and the young left back Fran played very strongly. Sucina tried to nd a gap, but it was impossible for them. This was a well deserved victory and in fact already a historic match for the new entrant. With three sixteen and two seventeen year olds in the team, there is still

much growth in this team. Coach Jelco Oosterhof said Im obviously very happy with the three points, but the football should be a lot better. We must learn to nish a game, but that takes time. Young Scott played very strongly in mideld. Next game: 22-09-2013 Sporting Mazarrn, Camposol v SFC MINERVA 12pm in Municipal Mazarrn.

Despite a few injuries, there was a good team on the pitch. The rst 10 minutes was a bit of a nervous time for both teams. It was played with a lot of energy, especially as the whole game was played in the middle of the pitch. There were almost no chances created. Sucina tried with long balls and hoped the ball would fall once. The sporting game remained calm and positioning was very good and while the players waited for opportunities. This worked a few times by a strong playing Moha on the left. In the very last minute of the rst half Sporting Mazarrn got a free kick.

Firemen v- Policemen The Wednesday Group held their Policemen versus the Firemen Golf Competition on Wednesday 11th September although there are only about 2 Policemen and 2 Firemen amongst the 100 or so CGA Members and the other players are nominated into which team they will play for. This was a fun event which is held every year with a lot of banter and friendly rivalry. This year Lloyd Roberts was nominated Captain of the Firemens team and John Layland Captain for the Policemen. When all the match play teams had come in, it was found to be a draw so the two Captains had to go to the 9th hole and have a play off to decide the winner. The 9th hole is overlooked by the terrace of The Club House and many catcalls and banter emanated from there whilst the Captains fought it out. At the end of the day the Firemen were victorious and a good time was had by all. On 24th September the Ladies Section of the CGA challenged the Mens Section to a match. This creates a lot of erce competition and in the six years we have been running this annual event the men have only won once, so game on! Although it must be said the Ladies do have the advantage of 4 extra shots per team; 2 on the front and 2 on the back 9 holes. The Costa Clida Ladies League This started again on 30th September and we are all looking forward to our friendly clashes and hoping to get 2 more teams to join in with us as this would make the League even more challenging. If you are a group of Lady Golfers who would like to be part of our group, you are very welcome to join us. We play at reciprocal golf courses on a home and away basis and most courses at reduced green fees. To participate in the League you only need a group of 6 ladies. For more information please contact Betty Roberts on bettylloyd1560@hotmail.com. MABS Charity and Club de Golf Open Day On Saturday14th September Camposol Club de Golf held their Ofcial Open Day with all proceeds from the 58 participants paying 5 in a Stableford Competition going to MABS. The day was extremely well organised with sponsors paying 100 to display their advertising material on each hole. There were Nearest The Pin holes and Longest Drive for both men and women, a Hole In One Hole with a 10,000 prize, although no-one achieved this. A full report by MABS can be found on page 60. A new era is starting at Camposol Club de Golf with a new Committee being formed with the hope of bringing all the different groups together under one umbrella. They are going to run the handicap system organising monthly qualiers, club competitions with an annual club championship and annual knockout competitions for singles, doubles and mixed doubles. The new Committee: Chairman - Colin Dorsett Interim Captain - Norman Morgan Handicap Secretary - Vron Porter Competition Secretary - Peter Coulstock

Committee Secretary - Bruce Furness Committee Members Steve Dixon, Eugene Toye, David Stokes, Jim Chapman and Stuart Fearn We wish them all luck with what they are trying to do and if the Open Day we had on Saturday is anything to go by things are on the right track. Betty Roberts

Mazarrn FC made a great start to the new season in the Primera Autonomica with a deserved 2-1 away victory at local rivals EMF Fuente Alamo on 14th September. With many of last years team still remaining, the squad has been strengthened by the return of two former stalwarts, Juan Andreu and Alcaraz in defence and the impressive Moha and Tico in mideld. Former juvenile captain Pescao has also returned to the club and the early signs are most promising.

The nal was keenly contested with Chris Marchant emerging as the winner and Phil Newman and Steve Wilson taking the other places on the victory rostrum. The silly season is over and now we enter what is usually the most productive and uninterrupted period for sales. From now until Christmas its peak selling time. For motivated vendors, this is a good time to review their selling price to take maximum advantage, otherwise another year passes by and the market is still expected to see further price drops in 2014. Although far from booming, there are buyers out there, keen to snap up a bargain and as I write this column, the exchange rate has just nudged 1.20 to the pound, adding further incentive to buy now. Although the PPT (Property Purchase Tax) has just risen by 1% to 8% in the Murcia region, we can at least count ourselves lucky that were not in the Valencia/Costa Blanca province where resale property buyers will now have to pay 10% PPT.

For some time now, the long-term rental market has been gathering pace. Many of those renting in the area are looking to purchase and by choosing to rent rst, they have given themselves time to look around the area before deciding on the best location for their new home. In the past, advertising property for sale in the local press and magazines such as the Costa Clida Chronicle has brought us more vendors than buyers, but this has now reversed and we now receive more enquiries from buyers and more walk-in clients referring to our local advertising, resulting in short-notice viewings. Its very much appreciated when vendors allow us to bring clients at short notice. We know how much chaos this causes about the house and to daily routines, but at least its a positive and encouraging sign.

This being my rst column for the Costa Clida Chronicle, I would like to thank Jennie Iredale of Best of Spanish for her previous and informative contributions. Kenneth Whettall Commercial Director Fuente Alamo Real Estate info@fuentealamorealestate.com Tel 0034 968 598 173

Summer of Spanish This summer season saw a huge jump in the number of Spanish clients renting their holiday villas by the sea. Although every year we deal with clients from all over the world, the 2013 summer season seemed to be our Summer of Spanish! Typically we see a family arrive into one of our lovely holiday properties, and then they get on the phone to extended family enthusing about the area and the beaches. The following day we will get a urry of messages from said family asking for villas and apartments in the same resort, or even the same street! Increasingly younger Spanish clients are nding us and booking via the internet for the rst time, whilst older generations still prefer to phone, meet face to face and practically take a DNA sample before they decide to book. Our Spanish clients say that the service that they get surpasses anything they have received in the past. One family could not believe that their AC was adjusted and problem-solved within half an hour of calling me on a Friday evening. Although we have yet to analyse the booking statistics for the year, it looks like 50% Spanish guests, 25% from UK, 10% French, 10% Scandinavian and 5% other nationalities as a rough guide. Key to the increase in Spanish renters is also the number of repeat clients that we have looked after, many of whom now return every year to holiday with us. I would like to say a big thank you to all my staff and all the suppliers and tradesmen that work with us all year round and go the extra mile to make sure that we send away happy holidaymakers year after year. Wherever they come from! Liz Edmiston OwnersAway Property Rentals & Management Tel 691 977 107 info@ownersaway.com www.ownersaway.com
