Green Project or Person of the Year

DUNCAN BAKER-BROWN ECO-TECH SHOW

The Argus, Wednesday, October 2, 2013

MAGPIE CO-OPERATIVE

WEVE all heard of the traditional bricks and mortar, but last year one man decided to build a house using materials such as car number plates, street signs, videotapes and toothbrushes. Architect Duncan Baker-Brown dreamt up the project after Channel 4s Grand Designs presenter, Kevin McCloud, constructed a house made from replenishable organic materials in 2008. He got former Argus Achievement Award nominee Cat Fletcher on board as his chief scavenger and they set about researching waste materials they could use. The main structure was made of ply shuttering and timber with boxes of various waste products making up the wall cavity. Cat Fletcher said: Duncan has been the driving force behind this project. He has managed to bring together people and organisations from every sector (public, private and charitable) with flair and with undying patience. He is visionary and leading by example and action, walking the walk. He is a shining example of green and innovative credentials.

BRIGHTONS green identity is both a reputation and a way of life we are all intensely proud of. As such, competition in the Green Person or Project category has been understandably fierce. But surely few projects can come close to rivalling the innovation and professionalism thats on display at the Eco-Tech Show. Bringing together some of the best minds in renewable technology and innovation, this is an event that showcases how inspiring and engaging eco living can be. Whether youre a small business owner looking to make your workplace more green or just keen to know how you can become more sustainable on a shoestring, the Eco-Tech show had all the answers. Supporter, Patrick Stark, said: There really is nothing else quite like it. If you want to know what the latest developments are in green technology then it is the place to be. Each year it gets bigger and better and long may that continue.

Transport manager of Shabitat, John Hornig

THE Magpie Cooperative began life as Magpie Recycling in 1990 at Hanover Community Centre. It started with just three volunteers who frantically collected as much glass and office paper as possible. In 1992 they became a cooperative and they havent looked back. Starting out with a humble 17 subscribers, the company now has approximately 2000 customers throughout Brighton and Hove. Magpie now runs a number of services throughout the city Perhaps their best know project is Shabitat, a warehouse shop which provides affordable second hand furniture, electrical goods, clothes and homeware. Over the last 20 years, Magpie has proved anything is possible when like-minded individuals get together. A deserving nominee.

Carer of the Year

MARJORIE COZENS
SHE has dedicated her life to caring for others. But despite more than 80 years of looking after the sick, needy and downtrodden, Marjorie Cozens has never received any recognition. Best friend Beryl Chippendale thinks that should change. She said: Marjorie is the most fantastic woman. She has spent her whole life putting others before herself. She would hate to know that I have nominated her, she doesnt like all the fuss. Shes awfully modest. Mrs Chippendale first met 86-year-old Mrs Cozens, from Brighton, when they were at Varndean School together. From an early age she was caring for others. At first it was through the local Sunday school before she helped run a church lunch club. Into her adult life she took it upon herself to visit the sick and elderly in hospital and at home. Mrs Chippendale added: She has looked after so many people over the years. Even now as an 86-year-old she comes round and looks after me. We have been friends since school and are still friends now. If anyone deserves this award it is her. She is fantastic.

ALLISON FACKRELL

SOPHIE JORDAN
SOPHIE Jordan was the youngest nominee in this category at just 13-years-of-age. But despite her young years, she has shown the kind of dedication and care most could never imagine. She looks after her mum who has Scoliosis of the spine which causes her chronic pain. With her grandparents also both suffering ill health, she is responsible for looking after her four siblings. As well as cooking and cleaning she has to all the little things most take for granted such as putting her brothers and sisters to bed. Her family have had a tough time over recent years but Sophie has always been there to help. As a result, she would be excused for letting her school work suffer. But Sophie is an A grade student. Jackson Hall said: Not only is she an absolute star for caring in the way she does, but she is a fantastic girl with a lovely personality. We are nominating her on behalf of the Association of Carers and cannot think of anyone who deserves this award more.

ALLISON Fackrell is one of the most loving and dedicated foster carers we have ever come across. Over the years she has taken in countless children. Each and every one of them she has treated as a fully-fledged member of her family. She takes them on family holidays, attends every attraction goings and does everything in her power to provide them with a normal life. This despite the fact she suffers from her own health problems. Her selflessness and dedication was demonstrated last October when she was placed in emergency care of two twin girls. She nurtured and cared for the pair before they were returned to their family recently. Friend, Lisa Mighall, said: Despite all this hard work Allison's health has still been a struggle but this has not reflected on her care and devotion for her foster children. Allison deserves an award as she is a remarkable, outstanding, caring, dedicated person. Any child that is placed in Allison's care is a very lucky child.
