and also sort of a parody of the film noire detective story, those old black and white movies you see on TV," says Joel Howe, the director and producer ofthe latest show, as well as the president of the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Fredericton. "We're going to have long shadows, and on stage for the acting scenes everybody is going to be in black and white. It's interspersed with classic Broadway numbers as well as jazz songs." As the musical numbers aren't in the black and white tradition, they'll bring colour on the stage with projections and props and things like that, he says, adding, "It's a lot offun." everyone there has it out for him. You don't get to the top without stepping on a few people." When Drake gets killed, the question becomes )Vhich one ofthe many characters who had a motive actually did the deed? A mobster, two nuns, a washed-up Broadway star and a butler are just a few of the characters who have their reasons for wanting him dead. Howe expects this show will appeal to fans of musicals or mysteries, because along with the story there is a lot of classical music, the kind that tends to appeal to a wide range. On the list are songs by Cole Porter and classics such as "Mack the Knife," "All that Jazz" or "Jump, Jive and Wail." The show opens with "Singin' in the Rain." "The famous songs that really everyone enjoys," Howe says. "But also I think fans of film noire would enjoy seeing it. It really is a
