Advanced Inorganic Chemistry Question 1 A) Boric Acid Identity operation? Yes, the identity operation requires you to do nothing.

. Thus, it gives you an identical configuration. All things possess the identiy element. Proper Rotations? There is a C3 axis that is perpendicular to the plane of the molecules and passes through the boron atom. There is a C3-2 axis coincident with the C3 axis. Thus, there is a total of 2 C3 axes as described in the character table. To the right is an example of these C3 axes. Reflections? There is one sigma_h. This mirror plane contains the 3 OH groups and the B atom. Improper Rotations? There is a total of 2 S3 improper rotation axes. There is one S3 rotation axis which is perpendicular to the plane of the molecules and passes through the B atom. There is also a S32 improper rotation axis which is coincident with the S4 axis. Inversion? No, the molecules does not have an inversion center.

B) C3H4 Allene Identity operation? Yes, the identity operation requires you to do nothing. Thus, it gives you an identical configuration. All things possess the identiy element. Proper Rotations? There is a C2 axis passing through the line of centers of the three carbon atoms. There are 2 C2' axes perpendicular to the C2 axis and passing through the central carbon. Reflections? There are two mirror planes each passing through one of the pairs of hydrogens and bisecting the angle between the other pair. These contain the principal axis C2, and therefore are sigma_d mirror planes. Improper Rotations? There is an S4 improper rotation axis coincident with the C2 rotation axis with its refletion plane perpendicular to the C2 axis and passing through the central carbon. The S4-2 axis is identical with the C2 axis. passing through the three carbon atoms. Inversion? No, the molecules does not have an inversion center.

C) Anthracene: D2h Identity operation? Yes, the identity operation requires you to do nothing. Thus, it gives you an

identical configuration. All things possess the identiy element. Proper Rotations? There is a principal C2 axis passing through the center of the molecule and perpendicular to its plane. There are 2 other C2 axes, C2' and C2" perpendicular to the princial rotation along the y and x dierctions and bisecting the molecule. Reflections? There is a mirror plene (sigma_v) containing the principal rotation axis and also passing through the x-axis. There are two other mirrow planes one containing the principal rotation axis and passing through the y axis (sigma_v'), whild the other is a sigma_h in the plane defined by the x and y axes and passing through the centers of all the C atoms. Improper Rotations? There are no improper rotation axes distinct from C2 = S4-2. Inversion? Yes the molecule has an inversion center. The inversion center is the center of the molecule.
