Gear Pump

Gear pumps use two meshed gears to develop fluid flow. The drive gear is powered by a drive shaft and turns the idler gear, forming pumping chambers between the gear teeth that are enclosed by the pump housing. External gear pumps place the gears side by side to draw fluid into the chambers as the gears unmesh and force it out as they mesh again. Internal gear pumps have an external gear that meshes with teeth on the inside of a larger gear, with pumping chambers formed between the teeth and a seal separating the inlet and outlet. Both external and internal gear pumps are fixed displacement designs.

  • Gear Pumps: Explains the mechanism of gear pumps, external and internal gear pump types with advantages and diagrammatic representations.

Gear Pumps:

A gear pump develops flow by carrying fluid between the teeth of two meshed gears. Powered by the drive shaft, the gear known as the drive gear turns the second gear, known as the driven or idler gear. The pumping chambers formed between the gear teeth are enclosed by the pump housing, or center section, and side plates (often called as wear or pressure plates). Gear pumps are referred to as unbalanced because the high pressure at the pump outlet imposes an unbalanced load on the gears and the bearings. Large bearings imported into the designs counteract these loads. As fixed displacement pumps, gear pumps provide two ways of altering volume levels. The first is to replace the existing gears with gears of different dimensions. The second is to vary the volume by changing the speed at which the drive gear turns. The gears can handle a hydraulic pressure of up to 3600 psi with adequate compensation for axial loading.

External Gear Pumps:

The gears are placed side by side in an external gear pump. A partial vacuum is created at the inlet as the gear teeth unmesh, drawing fluid into the chambers formed between the teeth. The chambers carry the fluid around the outside of the gears, where it is forced out as the teeth mesh again at the outlet. As the gear unmesh together, any fluid left in the chamber develops a high level of pressure. Decompression notches machined into the side plates relieve this fluid and the corresponding pressure. Any unrelieved fluid is channeled into a groove used to lubricate the bearings.

Internal Gear Pumps:

This pump design consists of an external gear that meshes with the teeth that are on the inside of a larger gear. The pumping chambers are formed between the gear teeth. A crescent seal is machined into the valve body between the inlet and outlet where clearance between the teeth is maximum. In this way, the two parts are separated while the gears carry oil past the seal.

Like the external type, internal gear drives are fixed displacement and are available in single and multiple configurations.
