Relay For Lifes Survivor Dinner set for June 6

Staff Writer clewis@erwinrecord.net

By Cody B. Lewis

With an expected 100 survivors and guests in yearly attendance, the American Cancer Societys Survivor Dinner of Unicoi County, will be what organizers have

called, a night of hope and encouragement. More than 500,000 people are diagnosed with cancer every year and the dinner, which will be held Saturday, June 6, at Unicoi United Methodist Church, joins cancer survivors, their caretakers and

guests together for support and fellowship. I think for me its just an opportunity for survivors and the community to join in support, Survivor Co-Chair Renea Rogers said. Survivors at all ages, whether they be a 15-year survivor or someone

who was recently diagnosed with the disease, are invited. Rogers son Nick, who has battled non-Hodgkins Lymphoma for two years and was recently diagnosed as having no evidence of the disease, spoke at the 2007 dinner. Its a special time for survivors,

Relay For Life Co-chair Lesley Hughes said. They enjoy seeing others, hearing their stories and providing a shoulder for support. Any survivors are invited to attend, but must RSVP. The dinner will begin at 6 p.m. For more information, call 926-2921.

YE OLDE RENAISSANCE FAIRE

Performers from the Unicoi County High School Theater Arts Department during their annual Renaissance Faire enjoyed pleasant weather and good times. Electric rates down, but water going up

From Staff Reports Erwin Utilities will pass on a Tennessee Valley Authority electric-rate decrease to customers July 1, but the public utility will increase water and sewer rates at the same time. TVA announced that the quarterly fuel-cost adjustment will decrease for the third straight quarter for billing periods beginning July 1. Overall, the decrease will be a 4.1-percent reduction on total average wholesale electric rates. Erwin Utilities will pass the decrease on to each customer. Savings will vary, but residential customers can expect a decrease that ranges from about $2 to $5 in their monthly electric bills. Effective on that same day, July 1, Erwin Utilities will implement an increase to water and wastewater rates due to an increase in operating and maintenance costs and a decrease in demand. General Manager Lee Brown explained, Water and wastewater utilities revenue relies heavily on how much water everyone uses. When residential and individual customers use less, water and wastewater utilities struggle to cover the costs of water production, wastewater treatment, operations, and maintenance. Effective July 1, the water customer charge will increase by $1 to $6.47 inside the city limits and by $1.5 to $9.71 outside the city limits for a residential meter. The water use charge per 1,000 gallons will increase $1.3 inside and $1.95 outside. The wastewater customer charge will increase by $1 to $4.45 inside and by $1.50 to $5.58 outside. The wastewater use charge per 1,000 gallons will be $2.71 inside and $4.07 outside. Residential customers inside the Erwin city limits will pay $1.66 more month for an average use of 3,000 gallons of water used and $1.70 more for an average wastewater use of 2,800 gallons collected. Residential customers outside the Erwin city limits will pay $2.49 more per month for 3,000 gallons of water used and $2.57 more for 2,800 gallons of wastewater collected.
