CURTIN UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING Process Plant Engineering 322/518 Tutorial sheet 4 Fluid Flow 1.

Pressure drop in non-isothermal liquid flow Oil is pumped at the rate of 6000lb/hr through a reactor made of commercial steel pipe 1.278 in. ID and 2000 ft long. The inlet condition is 400F and 750 psia. The temperature varies with the distance, L ft, along the reactor according to the equation T (in F) = 1500 1100 Exp(-0.0003287L)

(in cP) = exp(

7445.3 6.1706) T + 459.6 = e0.936 0.00036T

f = 1.6364[ln( 0.135 6.5 2 + ) ] D N Re

Rounds equation applies for the friction factor: Determine the outlet pressure.

2. Comparison of pressure drops in a line with several sets of fitting resistances Consider a flow in a 12 in steel line (1000 ft long) at a Reynolds number of 6000. The line is fitted with 1 long radius Elbow, 1 branched Tee, 1 Gate Valve, 1 Globe Valve. Calculate the pressure drop using the equivalent lengths, velocity head factors shown in Tables 4, 5 and 6.? 3. A network of pipelines in series, parallel and branches Write down the equations for key lines shown in the following schematic pertinent to pressure drop and friction factors.

Use the following formulae for pressure drop and friction factor.
Pi Pj = ( f ij Lij Qij 8 ) 2 2 )( gc Dij

f ij =

1.6364 6.5 2 + )] [ln( Dij ( N Re ) ij
