VERY IMPORTANT: Please, make use of your academic English and domain-specific terminology in composing your answers for the different questions included in this Practical Task. For example, dont overuse the terms teacher and student; when writing about language testing, you have other options: teachers who design tests can be referred to as test designers/developers or testers; teachers who give tests to students become test administrators; teachers who correct and score tests become (test) raters, etc.; as for students in test situations, you can refer to them as testtakers, testees, candidates, etc. Its important that as you do your readings for this course you pay attention to domain-specific terminology. Its use will become an important asset of your tasks.

Tecumseh's Curse and the US Presidents
W.H. Harrison was seen as a hero when the forces of Tecumseh were defeated at the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811. Later, in 1840, he won the presidency. This, however, never really had a chance to begin. Harrison was caught in a rainstorm and caught a cold which led to his death. He served as president from March 4 to April 4, 1841. His death would be seen as the first in a long series of what became known as Tecumsehs Curse*: Presidents elected in a year ending in a zero would die in office. In 1860, A. Lincoln became president. The US quickly moved into a Civil War (1861-1865). On April 9th, General Lee surrendered to General Grant thereby ending the dispute that was tearing the nation apart. Only five days later, Lincoln was assassinated by southern sympathizer J. W. Booth. J.A. Garfield elected in 1880, W. McKinley in 1900, W.G. Harding in 1920, F.D. Roosevelt in 1940 they all met the same fate. In 1960, J.F. Kennedy became the youngest elected president. This charismatic leader suffered some highs and lows during his short term of office (Bay of Pigs Invasion; Cuban Missile Crisis). On November 22, 1963, Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. L.H. Oswald was found to be guilty as a lone gunman by the Warren Commission. However, many people still question whether more individuals were involved in a conspiracy to kill the president. In 1980, Ronald Reagan became the oldest man to be elected president. This actor-turned-politician also suffered highs and lows during his two terms in office. On March 30, 1981, J. Hinckley attempted to assassinate Reagan in Washington, D.C. Reagan was shot but was able to survive with quick medical attention. President Reagan is the first to foil Tecumsehs curse and some consider it to be broken.
* Curse: Magic words which are intended to bring bad luck to someone.
