Dear Friends and Clients, In my 21 years at Sotheby's, including more than a decade as Principal Auctioneer, I have seen many historic sales. Only weeks ago, Sotheby's made history again in Hong Kong, with the record for an auction series by a global art business in Asia; totalling $535 million, the series set records in every category, including Chinese Contemporary Art and Magnificent Jewels. At the same time, we announced plans for a major auction and three selling exhibitions to be held later this season in Beijing, the undisputed art capital of China. Now, New York takes centre stage in the international art market, and Sotheby's is poised to set records again. As the Worldwide Head of Contemporary Art I am especially looking forward to the postwar masterpieces we have brought together; even more extraordinary is that they can be seen in the context of treasures from many other periods and collecting areas. Highlights from Magnificent Jewels, Geneva

The Pink Star. 59.60 carats Estimate in excess of $60,000,000

A fancy vivid pink diamond that is the most valuable jewel ever to come to auction will be on display in New York before it is sold at Sotheby's Geneva later in November. It will be offered only a few weeks after Sotheby's sold the largest white diamond at auction, a 118-carat beauty.
