Recognize, know, use and demonstrate a variety of appropriate arts elements and principles to produce, review and revise original works in the arts. c. CC.1.4.4.A Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. I. Performance Objectives - The fourth grade students will identify items needed for their own safety kit by showing their knowledge in their journals. - The fourth grade students will explain what they learned about tornadoes by showing their understanding on an exit slip. II. Instructional Materials 1. Science Explorer Weather and Climate Teacher Edition by Barbara Brooks Simons 2. BrainPop Video: http://www.brainpop.com/science/weather/tornadoes/ 3. Water bottles full of water with caps 4. Glitter (6) 5. Dish soap (6) 6. Duct tape (1) 7. Timeline 8. Glue 9. Scissors 10. Tornado Power Point 11. Tornado Guided Notes

III. Subject Matter/ Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea) A. Prerequisite Skills 1. Students should know how to complete guided notes. 3. Students should know how to complete a journal entry. B. Key Vocabulary 1. Tornado- a rapidly whirling, funnel-shaped cloud that reaches down from a storm cloud to touch Earth's surface. 2. Tornado Warning- alert issued by weather services to warn that severe thunderstorms with tornadoes may be likely to occur. 3. Tornado Watch- when weather conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms that are capable of producing tornadoes.

4. Tornado Alley- the area of the United States where tornadoes are most frequent. C. Big Idea: What is a tornado and how does it form? IV. Implementation A. Introduction 1. Teacher will have a quick review on snow storms. 2. Teacher will have the students talk about what they learned the day before in their table groups. 3. Teacher will play the Tornado BrainPop Video: http://www.brainpop.com/science/weather/tornadoes/ B. Development 1. Teacher will hand out guided notes to everyone. 2. Teacher will present power point on tornadoes stopping after the safety slide. 3. Students will follow along and complete the guided notes. 4. Teacher will review the guided notes to make sure students have the correct information. 5. Teacher will finish the power point showing students real life aftermath photos from tornadoes. 6. Teacher will hand out the material needed for the tornado in a bottle and the directions. 7. Students will then do the tornado in a bottle activity. 8. Teacher will walk around and help if needed. 9. Once students are finished teacher will show them how the tornado is formed in the bottle by showing them with her own bottle. 10. Teacher will ask students if they can see the tornado. 11. Students will get their science notebooks out. 12. Teacher will hand out tornado timeline. 13. Teacher will explain the timeline. 14. Students will cut out and glue the timeline into their science notebooks. C. Closure 1. Teacher will explain that she wants the students to write down what they would put in their safety kits. 2. Students will create the list in their science notebooks. 3. Teacher will ask if the students have any questions. 4. Teacher will hand out the Exit Slips. 5.
