SCN 494 FINAL PROJECT LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE Your Name: Hannah Simmons Title of Lesson: Reuse, Recycle!

Grade: 3-6th STANDARDS 3.MD.B.4. Generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. 3.MP.6. Attend to precision.

2. Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. b. develop the topic with facts, definitions, and details

LESSON SUMMARY/OVERVIEW This lesson will allow students to reuse old shirts, by cutting them and creating scarfs. Students will explain in their own person "tag" what fabrics where used, where it was made, how it was re-made, why they reused it, and how it helps out sustainability. OBJECTIVES Students will be able to construct a hypothesis about what would happen if bees were to no longer exist using their knowledge about bees and what they do for our world. Students will be able to create an informative text that backs up their hypothesis by introducing the topic and developing the facts. ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION Students will create a tag including all items listed above, in paragraph form. Students must express reasoning, and cover all topics to receive full credit. They must follow proper measurements of cutting to achieve the ideal scarf. They will be graded on following directions and participation.

PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE Prior to this lesson, students need to know information about how clothing is produced, how reusing old shirts is sustainable, and what fabrics are used. MATERIALS -Old t-shirt brought in by students -scissors -ruler -marker - Construction paper -hole punch -ribbon or yarn

VOCABULARY/KEY WORDS -Sustainability -production -reuse/recycle

TEACHING PROCEDURES -Have students bring in old t-shirt they were considering throwing away. -works better if it is a cotton shirt - Have students lay t-shirt flat on desk, and place ruler flat, horizontally on shirt right below sleeve line. Have them use the marker to draw line against the ruler across the shirt. -Students will them cut across the marker line. -Once every student has cut across, have students measure three inched up from the bottom and mark it with a straight line. (Used for cutting later) Have them repeat this process, until entire bottom of the shirt is marked with a line about half an inch apart. -Proceed to have students cut up each line. -Once every line is cut, simple have the students gently tug on the strips so that they separate from each other. -Open shirt up and place around the neck, with cut edges down, so see final product. -Students will then go on to write their "tag". -If desired, cut construction paper to look like a tag. Keep it large enough for students to write all their information down. -On tag, have student write down there name, then look at old tag on original shirt, and write down the fabric, and where it was made. -From then on have students write down what their new scarf is made from (old t-shirt) and how they reused it. Have them explain why they remade it into a scarf and why it is more sustainable.

-Once their tag is complete hole punch the top of their tags and string the ribbon/ yarn through it and tie it around their new scarf. -Since there are boys in the classroom, that will be reluctant to wear their new scarfs, suggest giving it to a relative for the next up and coming holiday, or birthday.
