Individual Behaviors in Gladiator

Introduction
In Gladiator, victorious general Maximus Decimus Meridias has been named keeper of Rome and its empire by dying emperor Marcus Aurelius, so that rule might pass from the Caesars back to the people and Senate. Marcus' neglected and power-hungry son, Commodus, has other ideas, however. Escaping an ordered execution, Maximus hurries back to his home in Spain, too late to save his wife and son from the same order. Taken into slavery and trained as a gladiator by Proximo, Maximus lives only that he might someday take his revenge and fulfill the dying wish of his emperor. The time soon comes when Proximo's troupe is called to Rome to participate in a marathon of gladiator games held at the behest of the new emperor, Commodus. Once in Rome, Maximus wastes no time in making his presence known, and is soon involved in a plot to overthrow the emperor with his former-love Lucilla, Commodus' sister, after whom he lusts, and also the widowed mother of Lucius, heir to the empire after his uncle, and democratic-minded senator, Gracchus.

Intellectual and Physical Abilities


Maximus use his intellectual and physical abilities while he was fighting in a battle. He used his physical ability to fight the enemy and intellectual ability to plan for overcoming his enemy.

Perceptual Speed
During fight Maximus had the capability to identify quickly that how to survive in different situations, Like in a marathon of gladiators game he quickly identifies that their survival are only being possible if his team fought unitedly so he order his team to being united if they wants to survive.

Spatial Visualization
Maximus also has the capability of spatial visualization, as he often imagine that he is walking through the wheat crops.

Basic Physical Abilities


Maximus was quick and spontaneous in using his all physical abilities like strength, flexibility and other factors like Body coordination, Balance and stamina. Strength factor includes Dynamic Strength: Maximus uses his dynamic strength in sword fighting during battle. Trunk Strength: Maximus uses his trunk strength while pushing his enemy from him. Static Strength: Maximus uses his static strength when his enemy come at him and he stand still produce his force to stop him. Explosive Strength: Maximus uses explosive strength to replying his enemy in a fight of gladiators. Flexibility factor includes Extent Flexibility: Maximus uses this to move forward and backward in the fight of gladiators. Dynamic Flexibility: Maximus uses dynamic flexibility while moving so quickly during his fight against Commodus.

Theories of learning
Classical Conditioning: When Maximus bought by Proximo, Maximus doesnt know about
gladiators game. After his first fight he becomes use to it. Then every time whenever he was brought to arena he used to pick up his sword, dressed himself and fight for his own survival. Firstly he doesnt want to fight again but when he came to know by Proximo that their survival is not possible without fighting then he became ready to fight in the gladiators game.

Operant Conditioning: Companions of Maximus in Proximos jail volunteered themselves


and accept Maximus as leader while fighting in the arena of Commodus for the sake of their survival. Because they know that nobody leads them better than Maximus in the game of gladiators.

Social Learning Theory: Lucius the son of Lucilla wants to fight like Maximus. He made
Maximus his role model and wishes to lead troops like Maximus does.

Methods of Shaping Behaviors


Positive Reinforcement: Maximus was rewarded with the Kingdom of Rome by the dying
emperor Marcus Aurelius for his consistent success in many battles for Rome.

Negative Reinforcement: Maximus gave many success to Rome in many battles, He was
the responsible general. But when emperor Marcus Aurelius offered him the full responsibility of Rome as to become his successor, He denied to accept this responsibility.

Punishment: When Maximus defies the order of Commodus to accept him as a new emperor
and work under his orders, Commodus in that response Order his troops to kill Maximus and his family as punishment.

Extinction: Commodus killed his father to avoid the reinforcement of making Maximus as
ruler.

Continuous Reinforcement
Before the death of Marcus Aurelius, Maximus was continuously reinforced in many battles as a general to lead the troops.
