Part I PART-TIME JOBS In Britain it is very common for teenagers and young people to work in shops and tourist attractions. Other popular jobs are in cinemas, restaurants and as babysitters. I work all day on Saturdays, from 8 a.m. till 5 p.m., and during the school holidays, as an assistant in a large, modern hairdressing salon. I started working when I was 13 I did a morning paper-round- and Ive also worked wrapping and packing vegetables. My parents encourage me to work. They are happy for me to earn my own pocket money. At the hairdressers, I am on my feet all day and it can be tiring, but I really enjoy it. I meet a lot of people. Ive made new friends and Im gaining valuable experience. Id like to work full-time as a hairdresser when I leave school. Susan Wells

I work in a newsagent, selling newspapers, sweets and cigarettes. On Tuesdays and Thursdays I work for one and a half hours after school, and on Saturdays and Sundays I work for four hours. I first started to work two years ago I did a paper round and also served in a grocers shop. I quite enjoy working, but I work mainly so Ive got some money to spend. I dont think my school work suffers because I work. I can always find time for homework, and I manage to find time for music (Gary is timpanist with the Perth Youth Orchestra and the Perth Symphony Orchestra) and hanging out with friends. I dont want to work in a shop when I leave school. Id like to be a musician. Gary Stewart

I really like working here. Its very relaxed and some very interesting people visit the market, so Im never bored, says Dan, 20,who sells beauty products in Londons famous Portobello Road market. Dans paid 30 for Saturdays which gives him some extra going out money while hes at university. Dan Smith
