MISSCHANEL

She’s 14, American, and speaks no French at all. But six-foot-tall Kimora Lee Perkins is hot news in
Paris. She has become the top model at the Parisian fashion house of Chanel. She owes her famous
looks to a Korean mother and a black father. But when she was young, back home in St. Louis,
Missouri, she cried when she looked in the mirror and saw how tall she was. ‘I felt I was different from
all the other kids my age,’ she explains. Her mother Joanne Perkins, 34, recalls, ‘Kimora was a
miserable child. It was almost impossible for her to feel like other girls of her age, and some girls were
cruel. Growing up was a very painful experience for her.’ When she was 11, her mother took her to a
local modelling school. She thought modelling would be an interesting job because then she would be
with other tall girls. She began to like it very much, and had to learn how to walk and pose to show
the clothes at their best. Chanel chose her because ‘she has the look of the new century’, and now she
spends eight to ten hours a day modelling their latest fashions in various parts of the world. ‘I have to
try really hard to keep looking good for the cameras,’ she said.

The bubble room, Florida

There are a lot of colours, old music and toys in this restaurant. It’s very big, and children love it
because it’s always Christmas – there’s a Christmas tree and the waiters wear red and green. The
portions are very big. The cheese dish is famous and they serve it on fire! The desserts are
incredible – have two! People visit again and again – many people come every year.
O.Noir, Toronto
You can’t see any food in O.Noir. You can only taste and smell it. Why? Because there isn’t any
light. There are many French and Italian dishes on the menu, but there are only three starters:
‘Surprise Meat’, ‘Surprise Seafood’ and ‘Surprise Vegetarian’. There isn’t much information on
the menu, and they usually serve main courses with potatoes and vegetables or rice. If you like
surprises, visit O.Noir.
Ithaa, Maldives
This is an amazing glass restaurant under the sea. Fish swim over your head. There aren’t many
tables and there are only fourteen chairs. The lunch menu has one starter, one main course and
one dessert, but the dinner menu has seven courses! They serve a lot of fish and seafood,
vegetables, fruit and some chicken. (Children can have lunch, but not dinner.)
Cat Café Nekorobi, Tokyo
There aren’t any dishes here, only drinks. You pay for each hour that you are there, not for what
you drink. If you love cats, this place is perfect! There are a lot of them in the café. You can use
the internet and have some green tea. And… watch the cats!

I love my job!
James Shannon is a chef in a London restaurant. He talks about his job.
I work at Suzie’s, which is one of the most popular restaurants in central London. The best part
of working there is being part of a fantastic team of friendly and talented people.
I left school and started by washing dishes when I was only 16. I wasn’t interested in food and I
never cooked at home, but I worked hard, and soon became a waiter. Simon, who was head chef
at the time, then began to show me how to cook and I loved it so much; I went to college to
learn more.
When Simon left Suzie’s, I became head chef. At the time all the food was British. The quality was
excellent, but I wanted to do something different, so I decided to have an international menu.
Now we serve food from all around the world. There are so many fantastic markets and food
shops in London that I can usually find any ingredient I need.
I use a lot of natural ingredients such as brown rice, organic flour, and pasta. Some people think
that healthy food is boring, but they’re wrong. Well-prepared natural food has so much more
flavour than fast food. Our food is healthy and our customers love it. We use the very best meat
and the highest quality vegetables.
Suzie’s is open from Monday to Friday from 5.00 p.m. to 11.00 p.m., and from 12.00 a.m. to 11.00
p.m. at weekends. On Fridays and Saturdays we play live music from around the world. There’s a
children’s menu on Sundays and that’s when we serve traditional British food.

This is a funny story and it’s true. My name’s Shanice. I work in a big London hospital as a nurse
and I often work on New Year’s Eve so usually I don’t do anything special. Last year, however,
my friend Becky decided to have a New Year’s Eve party so I asked the hospital administrators to
give me the night off. They said they needed me but I could finish work at 11 p.m.
So, on 31st December 2017 I took my party clothes to work with me so I could get dressed for
the party later. When 11 p.m. came, I found an empty room and put on my party dress. Then I
booked a taxi from the hospital to my friend’s house. I was really hungry so I bought a sandwich
from the small shop in the reception area and had some of it while I waited for the taxi. Of
course, it’s a busy night because a lot of people go out to restaurants or parties and I wasn’t
surprised when my taxi was late. I was a bit worried by 11.20 so I phoned them again.
The taxi arrived at 11.30 and I said where I wanted to go, got into the car and put my
headphones on. I closed my eyes and enjoyed my favourite music. After about 15 minutes I
looked out of the window and I didn’t see any streets or houses that I knew. I asked the driver
where we were and he said, “Very near Agar Road”. But Becky lived in Agar Grove.
We were in completely the wrong part of London! I told the driver about the mistake and he was
very sorry. He quickly changed direction but there was not time so last year I celebrated New
Year in the back of a taxi with a bit of a sandwich and a bottle of water!
