The potato or Solanum tuberosum is a perennial tuber of the Solanaceae family. It is one
of the most widely used vegetables in Europe and North and South America. There are six other
species of Solanum of minor importance. There are thousands of varieties of potato in
cultivation.
Potatoes have a high carbohydrate content and include protein, minerals (particularly
potassium, calcium) and vitamins, including vitamin C. More vitamin C is found in freshly
harvested potatoes than potatoes that have been stored. Peeled, long-stored potatoes fried by
fast-food establishments have less nutritional value although they still have potassium and
vitamin C.
Potatoes can be prepared for eating in numerous ways, either with their skin on or
peeled, whole or cut into pieces, and with seasonings or without. All that is required is that they
be cooked to break down the starch and make them edible. Potatoes are generally eaten hot,
but several basic potato recipes involve cooking the potatoes and then eating them cold - potato
salad and potato chips. One of the commonest presentation methods is 'mashed potatoes'.
These are peeled, boiled then mashed and mixed with butter, cream, or other seasonings before
serving. Potatoes can also be baked whole; cut into cubes and roasted; grated and formed into
dumplings or potato pancakes; and cut into long, thin pieces and fried or baked.

27. If a customer wants to enjoy the best nutrition of potatoes, he should ….

A. consume them as soon as they are harvested

As the largest city on Buton, Baubau is better known as a stopover point. Since ancient times, this
city has been an important hub connecting the eastern and western islands of Indonesia. Baubau, with its
strategic position, was the gateway for sailors and explorers to enter the Maluku peninsula, the islands
of West Papua and the Lesser Sunda Islands to the south.
One of the attractions here is the Buton Palace Fortress. This fortress was originally a centre of
culture that became the main driver of the Buton civilisation. Inside, there is the palace of the kingdom
and the homes of several respected families from the La Ode and Wa Ode clans, the descendants of
whom continue to hold important positions in local politics. The fortress, which is spread across more
than 23 hectares, is believed to be the largest in the world. The limestone rocks that make up its
structure are said to be glued together with egg white. However, there has been no scientific
investigation about it. In the afternoon, the fortress, which is located at the top of a hill, becomes a
favourite gathering spot for Baubau teenagers. The view from the top is truly beautiful: the landscape
sweeps across to the crowded and vibrant city centre, and in the distance several ships going back and
forth through the narrow gap between Buton and the Muna islands. The visitors can also see
Sambapolulu mountain on Kabaena island.
The next stop is Karya Baru, a neighbourhood around 20 km from Baubau city centre. Several years
ago, this area, which is inhabited by the Ciacia people, became famous when it adopted the Korean
Hangul script as a method of communication. Although the script is imported, they have kept their
original Ciacia language. The visitors will be bemused when entering the neighbourhood and see the
Korean alphabet in various places, from road signs to school gates. It is as if they were on the edge of
Seoul or Busan, except without the K-Pop atmosphere. Visually this is certainly a unique experience for
the visitors.

A Nightmare
"Don't eat just before going to bed !" my mother used to tell me. "You might get a nightmare."
How right she was. I never believed her until it happened to me.
It was on a night when I felt hungry just as I was about to go to bed. So I made myself a peanut-
butter sandwich and a large cold glass of milk. After consuming them I went to bed.
Soon I drifted off into a troubled sleep. I dreamt that I was with a group of people looking for an
old woman. I was not sure why we were looking for her but we all seemed afraid of her. Somehow we
had to find her. So there I was, searching high and low for her in frightful places I had never been
before. Sometimes I seemed to be flying while at other times I seemed unable to move. The whole
atmosphere was one of fear, like a dreadful horror-movie in which I was a victim.
After some searching I entered a darkened room and saw a figure sleeping on a bed. As I got
nearer the figure suddenly threw away the blanket, got up and stared at me. It was an ugly old woman
with shiny golden teeth. She raised her claw-like fingers and walked towards me.
I wanted to run but was unable to. I tried to scream but I could not. In horror I struggled and
struggled to get away from the frightful woman.
The next moment I gave a muffled yell and found myself panting on my bed. My goodness, what
a horrible nightmare it was! For a minute or so I lay on my bed not daring to close my eyes for fear of
falling asleep again and continuing the nightmare. Then I sat up on my bed until the horrible feeling
passed. From then on I never eat just before going to sleep.
