Approved Title: Second Engineer DEFU: 259 I Organization Summary Reports to the Chief Engineer II Purpose of the Position

Supervises and delegates daily work of engine room personnel, engineers and crew. In charge of one safe watch keeping shift. III Major Functions and responsibilities 1. Organizes daily work of engine room personnel. Has a daily meeting with Chief Engineer regarding work items and occurrences. Responsible for the several log books to be kept. In charge of bunkering of fuel, lubricating oil, water. Supervises and checks maintenance and repair work by own crew and contractors. Decides if parts have to be renewed or replaced. In major cases, consults Chief Engineer. Is capable of doing repair work himself, can troubleshoot problems in hydraulic, pneumatic and electric automatic systems. In charge of one shift. During shift, responsible for and determines what to do in emergency situations. Monitors and, where necessary, adjusts all vital parameters/settings to obtain/maintain a safe and economical sailing. In charge of operation, maintenance and repairs of the machinery. Supervises the Engineers, Fireman/Greaser and Wiper(s) assigned to his shift. Works in cooperation with personnel of Deck and Hotel department. Orders spare parts for the machinery assigned to his shift in cooperation with the Inventory Specialist and follow up on projects that are postponed due to missing spare parts. Watch Responsibilities as assigned by the ERMM Supervise personally any unusually hazardous work, at any time. Responsible to appraise and develop engine officers and ratings skills, abilities, and attitudes. Responsible for protecting ships property against loss or damage and against irregular or wasteful practices by any member of the engine department. Perform Planned Maintenance in accordance to AMOS-W systems and frequently inspect assigned machinery and equipment for deficiencies. Complete an End of Term report which includes all technical items of significance occurring during the assignment on board. Read End of Term reports from previous officer and report any significant

unsatisfactory conditions to the Chief Engineer. Ensure those being supervised are performing their duties in accordance with all safety protocols and using proper safety equipment. Responsible for the administration, supervision and safe operation of assigned systems as assigned by the ERMM. Other duties as assigned by the Staff Chief Engineer or Chief Engineer.

IV Supervision received Medium supervision Work is reviewed at several steps along the way for accuracy by his direct supervisors, which include the 1st Engineer and the Staff Chief Engineer.

V Problem solving and decision making Safety comes always first and the 2nd Engineer makes effective decisions during his work and reports all his finding to his direct supervisor. The position requires more advanced engineering problem solving skills. An ability to demonstrate efficient decision making and communicates effective with their supervisor is also needed. VI Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities The Second Engineer has received the following knowledge, skills and training: License and/or schooling HBO Maritime Officer (Dutch) or Class 2 certification (British) 2nd Engineer all ships COC Experience 7-10 years experience on deep sea trade vessels preferred and sailed as Chief Engineer or 2nd Engineer Physical demands Shipboard positions are physically demanding. Must be able to bend, climb, perform repetitive motion, and repetitively heavy lift. Must be able to work varied shifts which can average up to 12 hours per day everyday while on board.
