NIKE, INC. LIGHTS THE WAY WITH NEW KYNETIC SHOE LINE
New shoes use revolutionary system to generate light for safer night runs
BEAVERTON, Ore., May 14, 2013 NIKE, Inc. (NYSE: NKE) today unveiled its new line of Kynetic training shoes, featuring groundbreaking technology that will turn a runners every step into bright beams of light for safer training after dark. Representing a major breakthrough in athletic science, the shoes harness the kinetic energy generated by running strides to power two 100 Lumen LEDs housed in the tip of each shoe. With a 240 degree beam spread and a projection distance of five meters, Kynetics will ensure that runners can see every crack and break in the sidewalk. The shoes are designed to keep runners safe from hazards such as uneven pathways, potholes, and inattentive drivers, allowing them to run with confidence even after the sun has set. For the road warriors who work nine to five every day, we understand how hard it is to squeeze runs in before the sun goes down, said NIKE, Inc. CEO Mark Parker. We wanted to create a shoe that would remove the dangers associated with night-time running, allowing athletes to be athletes 24 hours a day. The shoes are not for nighttime use only, however a simple button built into the left side of each shoe will toggle the LEDs on and off, meaning runners will need just one pair of shoes for all of their training needs. In the case that the shoes are accidently left on after a run, the shoes will turn themselves off upon losing the supply of kinetic energy generated by running. The LEDs are built to run for 30,000 hours of active light, ensuring that the shoes will last until theyve reached their mileage ceiling . The shoes themselves utilize an innovative upper shell, constructed entirely of tightly woven polyester yarn that varies in density: more open in targeted areas that need greater flexibility or ventilation and tighter in areas that demand support. Highlighted by their lightweight foam composition, minimal seams and state-of-the-art deep flex grooves, Kynetics are incredibly breathable and provide a more natural, comfortable and secure run than ever before. -More-

With more than 80,000 injuries occurring every year as a result of running at night, we wanted to make an extremely lightweight, form-fitting shoe that made night safety more comfortable and attractive, Parker said. 56% of runners active after sundown wont use headlamps or reflector vests because they ruin the liberating feeling of running. We wanted to provide them with a sleek and comfortable alternative. The shoe will be available for purchase in two color schemes, Seafoam/Azure and Charcoal/Lime, starting May 21, 2013 in NIKE stores worldwide. About NIKE, Inc. NIKES Kynetic Lights are designed to last for up to 30,000 hours (3.4 years) of active light, meaning the shoes will likely reach their mileage ceiling before youve warn them all the way through. The lights can be toggled on and off using a small button built into the left side of the shoe. The button also cycles through three different light settings before turning off: 40 lumens, for running along streets with street lights, 60 lumens, for running in poorly lit conditions, and 100 lumens, for running in heavily forested areas with no light at all. The ligthts are some of the most eco-friendly available, emitting almost no light pollution and working at the height of effeciency. If the lights on your shoes burn out before youre finished with them, we will send you a brand new pair free of charge.
