PAPILLION – LA VISTA SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL

COURSE SYLLABUS
Course Title: Robotics Engineering
Course Number: IA32
Duration: One Semester/One Credit
Grade: 9-12
Fee: none
Prerequisites: Must have completed or be enrolled in one of the following courses:
* Manufacturing and Engineering (Tech Ed II)
* Engineering (Drafting)
* Physics/Chemistry
* Pre-Calculus

Course Description: Student will experience an in-depth study of robotics systems using the VEX
Robotics System. Students will learn about structure, motion, power, sensors, control, logic and
programming systems of a robot while using the engineering problem solving model. This will allow
students to design and create robots to perform specific tasks. Students will also have the opportunity to
compete against peers to test their knowledge of robotics. Students will also research applications of
robotics used around the world to improve the quality of life for people. The students will then present
their findings in the form of a multimedia presentation. Critical thinking, flexibility, team work and

heat presses, and chemicals.

Projects and written assignments:

• Projects: see pacing guide

Elements of the course grade and their weights: Almost all points will be in two categories: daily work or
assessments and projects. Each day there will be some type of activity that the students can earn a maximum of three
points doing. Students should makeup activities or do suitable alternatives when absence. For large units an
assessment or project will be completed for a maximum of 100 points each. The majority of points will be assessments
and projects. This course is scored using total earned points over total possible points for the semester.

Daily records of earned points, participation, work ethics, and notable behaviors are done in a written gradebook.
Progress will be accumulated in two week totals and posted in the online grade book. For a more detailed anaylasis of
the two week totals please contact the instructor.

Summative assessments and major projects will be recorded and posted in the online grade book separately.

The Pyramid of Success will be used for students with habitual daily work issues or missing summative assessments
and major projects.

Policy about spelling, grammar and punctuation in written assignments: Students are expected to do their best on
all hand written assignments. They should be legible to a common audience. This work should be free of inappropriate
material. Word done on computers should be revised first for errors and corrected before submitting.
