Kirsten Bush English 1101 08-28-13 Someone who positively impacted my ability to write When I look back on my high

school career, I feel very blessed to have had some wonderful teachers that I can call my friends. One teacher, in particular, stands out in my mind when I think of someone who positively impacted my writing career, Ms. Marcille Nance. I never got to have Ms. Nance for an English class, but I did have her for yearbook for two years. I grew close to Ms. Nance, and was inspired by her writing talents. She always was so positive and uplifting when she critiqued my writing, and made me want to be a better writer. As a single mom with two boys, I look up to her for always putting her children first, and making her kids she taught a priority in her life. I think that Ms. Nance is a very intelligent woman and is the reason why I have such a strong passion for journalism and English today. 08-28-13 How do you think language connects to writing? I think writing and language are closely connected. I think that writing and language goes hand and hand to understand the English, because its such a complex subject. I think that when people say English is the hardest language of them all I think it is true. There is a million different ways to say and write the point you are trying to get across. I believe that the way someone speaks often impacts their writing skills because if they speak broke English how are they suppose to write normally, or should I say properly? With writing you hear a voice in your head, and its telling you what to put on a piece a paper while speaking you just speak and pray to God you make sense. I feel that its hard for people to become fluent in English just because our language is so hard. 9-9-13 SAE/ Ebonics I dont believe there is a standard American English just because of all the cultures that speak English. I think standard means the same, and English spoken through out the world, and in America, is so different. I really dont know what Ebonics is or why there is a controversy over it but I am sure it is about people who think they know what the standard American English is. I think that people think that English should be standard and if you speak it with an accent or do not speak it as your first language, you are judged by it. I believe that no matter where you go someone is always going to judge you for your English. -Ebonics- African American dialect of English 9-9-13 Ebonics in the Age of Obama The differences in the individual perspectives in the video, is that they argue that Ebonics is a term used to cover up using improper English, while the others think it is used to express how some people truly are. I think what stood out to me

Kirsten Bush English 1101 most was when the lady termed, We are using Ebonics to cover up improper English. I think I would have to agree with it. I think that the guy makes a solid point when he says, I remember going to the YMCA and people would say oh you speak white. I think that Ebonics is fine because I am culturally aware of it and can understand it sometimes, it just doesnt always sound as great as speaking a little more properly. Though I dont really speak with Ebonics because I was raised to speak like I was in an academic setting at all times, I think that it opens my eyes to other people who face this challenge. I agree that I think that it is an excuse for some people to use broken English; then again its not my culture. I think that it matters to people because they want equality and to be as respected the same by how they speak. My First Job I never have had an actual job. To me, I think being a nanny was the greatest job in the world. I love kids and being able to interact with them, its easy work, and I am making more then minimum wage. Most people consider being a nanny a low skill job, because its just so easy. I think it has prepared me for gaining skills necessary for starting my own family later down the road. I also think its better then a real job because its something I actually enjoy. Working with kids is a strong suit of mine. I really think babysitting is something you should take seriously because kids are their parents world. I think that children are considered easy to watch when the harsh reality of it is, it takes a lot of work to actually keep up with them. Its honestly like being a mom. I had to cook, watch, and play with the kids. Granted I know how to do each of these things fairly well, but it might be hard for some people who dont enjoy being with kids. Nanning is a job that is a blessing in my life, because I grow so fond of the children and love watching them grow up. Its something so simple, but so remarkable to me. Response to excerpt one: This person is very ignorant and quick to judge people who are waitresses and waiters. Yes, I understand that they may complain about something that is a whole lot simpler then running a corporation. But, they do put up with ignorant people like you. I feel like that this guy is very hateful and disrespectful to people in the food industry and just isnt a nice person in general. Response to excerpt two: This is person is responding to excerpt one, in a strong way that makes the person in excerpt one feel bad. I mean she is sticking up for people in the food industry because she knows how hard she works for such little in return. There arent many jobs out there that pay the bills, but its better then having NO JOB AT ALL. If she wasnt making a contribution to society, she wouldnt be working her butt of to support herself. Response to excerpt three: The harsh reality of life is school is not for everyone. One of my best friends Dad doesnt have a college degree yet makes $400,000 a year being the CEO of a NASCAR company. Im sorry, but some of the most successful people in life dont have college educations.

Kirsten Bush English 1101 My skills- interpersonal learning skills, people skills, time management, hard working- my special skills journalism and babysitting taking care of others I wouldnt consider myself the smartest girl in the world, but I do work harder then most. Im not the best a science and math but I give it my best shot, always. What I want to be good at-I would give anything to have a brain that comprehends math and science, I just want to be a doctor but not struggle. 10-16-2013 I have encountered many situations where I have felt awkward and out of place but nothing was worse then my senior year prom group. I went with a huge group of people who were my friends, but not really any of the people I fit in with. I dont think I really belonged because my group of friends had different people they were going with and it didnt end up being the most enjoyable night for me. I decided to go with my dates group of friends and not my own and I felt sort of out of place not having one of my best friends in the group. Granted, I am a very outgoing girl so it is easier for me to talk to people but I didnt feel at home and was happy be able to leave that night. I guess if it was a smaller group and I had at least someone there who understood how difficult it is to be surrounded by so many people youre not that close with it would have made the situation better. Mariah Carey Website 1) The goal of the community is to have a place to share love for Mariah Carey 2) They value Mariah Carey, obviously. But they also value this place to worship her. 3) They communicate through forums. 4) They communicate through social media and forum. 5) Im sure there are fans that have been around longer then the newbies. 10-21-13 Absent 10-23-13 -At this point in the community project, I am on my way to start my paper. My subject topic is the Make A Wish foundation, and I am really excited to share my knowledge of such a special organization with others. I am only a little confused of what the paper needs to have in it. I think that I will enjoy this paper better then my ILLI because it seems like its going to be easier to write about. My group thinks that my topic is great, and theyre interested in getting to know what Make A Wish does. -In general, I am looking for different stories. Every child with a life threatening illness has one and is granted a wish to do whatever they please. I want to get to know the different people we have helped through research. Because I am in Chi Omega and our philanthropy is Make A Wish, I understand we contribute large amounts of money each and every year. So, in writing and language I want to discover why and how they do what they do. - What are their values and goals? What are their expectations once you become a member?

Kirsten Bush English 1101 What did you expect coming into the community? Are there any kind of skills you need to have coming into the community? What does your community do to become successful? 11-4-13 I definitely agree that writing is thinking on paper. I prefer to think about things in my head before writing things on paper because sometimes it is easier for me to make sense of it all if I think about my subject for a long period of time. I normally need inspiration to write and I cant do that until I think long and hard on what I am trying to say. Sometimes I like to see my ideas on paper but I really just like to cognitively think about what is going on. Sometimes it helps me to write things out when I am frustrated or suffer from writers block though. It makes things a little more organized when I plan ahead but prefer to just think through what I am trying to say. 11-14-13 The myth I am most likely to believe is Instructors value only error-free prose and they focus mostly on commas and spelling. I would have the tendency to believe this myth the most because most of my high school teachers would be more focused on my grammar then the actual paper itself. I understand grammar is the key to a successful paper but I think that a paper can still be considered good even when it has some errors. Just because we forget a comma or misspell one word doesnt mean someone deserves ten points off. I think that some of the best work a kid can do will have mistakes and thats why we rely on our English teachers to help us fix those silly mistakes.
