Welsh Referee Lee Evans, who was last week in the Faroe Island on
Champions League duty will fly to Austria for the UEFA Europa League 3rd Qualifying Round 2nd Leg game between Rapid Vienna and Asteras Tripolis of Greece. His Assistants will be Phil Thomas (Trealaw) and Gareth Wyn Jones (Bontnewydd) with the 4th Official being Brian James of Rhydyfelin. This will prepare Lee well for his game the following week in Turku when he takes charge of the Finland v Slovenia Friendly International. Our Welsh UEFA Referee Observers have again been appointed to games in the third Qualifying Round making it three consecutive appointments for Brian Lawlor, and Referees Manager Rodger Gifford with two consecutive appointments for Ray Ellingham. Brian and Ray have games on 8th August with Brian going to the Czech Republic for Jablonec v the winners of the Stromgodset (Norway) / Debrecen (Hungary) 2 round game and Ray goes to the fantastic new stadium in Poznan in Poland for the Lech Poznan v the winners of the Zalgiris (Lithuania)/Pyunik (Armenia) 2 round game. On August 1st Rodger will visit either Northern Ireland or Greece for the winners of the Linfield v Xanthi game who will host either KR of Iceland or Standard Liege of Belgium. FAW Head of Competitions Andrew Howard commented; "The appointments in Europe are coming in thick and fast for Welsh referees which is most pleasing. I hope that anybody that is looking for a new hobby, a new direction in football or just hoping to be involved within the beautiful game, is inspired by the wonderful opportunities that refereeing has and they contact the FAW about our next referees course."

The New Saints bowed out of the Champions League in spite of a battling display in a 1-0 second qualifying round second-leg defeat by Legia Warsaw. Vladimir Dvalishvili's 53rd-minute goal gave the Polish champions a 4-1 aggregate win over the Welsh club. Craig Harrison's team put up a stubborn display in defence, with goalkeeper Paul Harrison in fine form. But they never looked like overturning a 3-1 defeat in the first leg in Wales. Goalkeeper and captain Paul Harrison was forced into action in the fifth minute when he dived low to his right to turn Miroslav Radovic's low shot past the post. The Saints then went close when Michael Wilde just failed to get on the end of Chris Marriott's deep cross, with home goalkeeper Dusan Kuciak scrambling. But it could not last, and Dvalishvili finally broke the deadlock eight minutes into the second half when he latched on to Radovic's pass and slotted the ball through Harrison's legs. OVER the past three decades Welsh Premier League clubs have achieved no more than the occasional good result in Europe. These welcome successes have been somewhat sporadic, however this summer has delivered what could hopefully signify a wind of change. For perhaps the first time in 20 years of competing in Europe, the performances of all our Welsh Premier representatives have caught the eye. And even more encouraging is the fact three of our four WPL hopefuls were first-time European entrants. July has seen Welsh teams play 10 Euro matches, winning two, drawing two and losing six - maybe not statistics to pull up trees, but a major improvement nonetheless on many previous campaigns. Pride of place went to PRESTATYN TOWN, who became only the second ever League of Wales/Welsh Premier club to win their debut European tie. After losing 2-1 at Rhyl to Latvians SK Liepajas Metalurgs in the first leg of their Europa League first qualifying round tie on July 4, few gave the Seasiders a prayer of turning the tables in the return at the Daugava Stadium. But late goals from Ross Stephens and Neil Gibson ensured Town won the match 2-1 to force extra time, which produced no further score. So it went to penalties and Prestatyn showed immense coolness from the spot to triumph 4-3 in an unforgettable shoot-out. In the second qualifying round, the Seasiders were unlucky to draw crack Croatian side HNK Rijeka, a wealthy club laden with international players, some rated as six-figure talents. It proved too much, Town losing 8-0 over two legs, but nonetheless, the Welsh Cup holders far from disgraced themselves in either leg. Prestatyn had already over-achieved, punched well above their weight in knocking out a team with a higher coefficient which were a dozen matches into their domestic season, while the Seasiders had played just two warm-up games. Fellow Euro rookies BALA TOWN gave the Welsh Premier a real boost by defeating Estonia's Levadia Tallinn 1-0 at Rhyl in their first-ever European match. Ian Sheridan's early goal earned him a place in Lakesiders' folklore and gave Colin Caton's side genuine hope of completing the job at the Kadriorg Stadium. Unfortunately, a striker called Hunt put paid to the chances of a Welsh victory by scoring a hat-trick in the reverse leg, which the Estonians won 3-1. However, Bala could be hugely proud of their first Euro adventure. The same can be said of AIRBUS UK BROUGHTON, who finished their inaugural European excursion unbeaten! Taking on Ventspils of Latvia, regular conquerors of WPL teams over the years, the Wingmakers drew 1-1 in the opening episode at Wrexham and that away goal was to prove crucial as Andy Preece's men could only earn a 0-0 split at the Olimpiskais Stadions - an heroic effort nonetheless. Airbus could look back on both games and feel genuinely unlucky they did not progress at the expense of opponents who moved into the third qualifying round this week. And that brings us to THE NEW SAINTS. Our domestic league champions faced a really tough hurdle against Polish giants Legia Warsaw, those respected veterans of many a Euro campaign. This UEFA Champions League tussle saw TNS take a 1-0 lead into the interval of the first leg at Wrexham, courtesy of a Ryan Fraughan goal. Unfortunately, the Ekstraklasa outfit raised their game in the second stanza and ran out 3-1 winners. Anyone expecting the second leg at the Polish Army Stadium this week to end up 3 or 4-0 in favour of the hosts were in for a surprise. Saints only lost 1-0 and gave a great account of themselves, as they had in the first leg. Perhaps a 4-1 aggregate defeat does not look too impressive on paper, but the quality of opposition must be taken into account. So overall, no Welsh Premier club emerged from this season's European antics with a black mark on their record. Two wins, two draws.....much improved on what has gone before. The key now is building on this and one thing is for sure....after this summer's experiences Prestatyn, Bala, Airbus and TNS will be longing for another crack at Europe as soon as possible. Onward and upward.....

Annual Referees Seminar another success

The recent Welsh Premier Referees, Assistant Referees and Referee Assessors gathered together at Newtown FC for their annual joint meeting where over 60 match officials were present. It was also good to see FAW President Trefor Lloyd Hughes and Vice President David Griffiths in attendance for the whole day to support the training and education programme. Before presenting his review of the year Referees Manager Rodger Gifford called upon FAW President Trefor Lloyd Hughes to present Huw Jones with a pennant on behalf of UEFA to mark his service as an International Referee which was followed by Referees Committee Vice Chairman presenting Huw with a Welsh Cap with his name on to mark the FAWs appreciation of his international work. Following a review of the year in terms of achievements the match officials were reminded of the need to supply the Welsh Premier Clubs with the best possible officiating. The League is getting stronger, the Clubs are moving on and with the financial rewards for qualifying for European competition it is essential that match officials also up their efforts to meet the challenges ahead. FAWs Head of Competitions Andrew Howard and Corbetts Sports Welsh Premier League Secretary Gwyn Derfel both made short addresses to the gathering thanking the match officials for their cooperation throughout the season and covering administrative points before handing back to the Referees Manager to introduce the first of the days speakers who was Iwan Sion a Producer with Rondo Media who attends matches every weekend in his professional capacity. Whilst Iwans address was entitled The View from Behind the Camera he stressed these were his personal opinions and not that of Rondo itself. He showed five clips from last season which stimulated great debate amongst his audience and openly admitted at the end of the session that he now had a far better understanding of both the Laws of The Game and Referees problems. The second speaker was Andrew Edwards, Chairman of Port Talbot Town, who gave a straight from the heart viewpoint on Welsh Premier refereeing which in the main was very complimentary but also raised issues with regard to the perception by clubs in relation to match officials before giving a fascinating insight into how a club like Port Talbot Town is run off the field and the costs involved to keep the club operating. The final speaker, who did two sessions, one in t he morning and one in the afternoon, was the FAs Head of Senior Referee Development Neale Barry (above left). Neale a former full time Referee in the FA Premier League took early retirement from his whistle to take up his role eight years ago which he describes as a dream job. His first presentation was on Advantage and his second one was on Judging Challenges but in reality it was did we see what really happened Both sessions were stimulating and thought provoking giving the eight discussion groups plenty to discuss and feedback to the plenary session. Neales passion for coaching referees on the simple things shone through both presentations and everyone could only have learnt from his input. At the end of a highly successful day Vice Chairman Cliff Evans (above right) made presentations to the three main speakers Iwan, Andrew and Neale thanking them for contributing to what he felt was an excellent day before paying both personal thanks and the thanks of those present to Referees Manager Rodger Gifford for all the time and effort put into organising such a worthwhile day. Head of Competitions Andrew Howard commented; "It was another excellent day for Welsh refereeing. The content was very varied as we kicked-off with Iwan who doesn't have a refereeing background or perspective, yet concluded with Neale Barry, whose life has been dedicated to refereeing, We have had some great feedback from the referees, who all went home having learnt."

Old Golds Chris Harte chronicles a season

Chris Harte is the Media Manager at Carmarthen Town. For over forty years he had been a sports writer and journalist before retiring to his wife's home town some three years ago. Like all scribes it took him no time at all to become part of the furniture at his local football club where he now holds forth each matchday from his 'media centre' at the back of the main stand. His book: "Old Gold," with a sub-title of 'A Season with Carmarthen Town,' is an unexpectedly good read. Considering that this is his 56th title then it is easy to see how he glides through the year giving us background information and opinion which would not be possible to find elsewhere. He starts with a quick resume of the previous twelve months which he calls "a disaster" and chronicles the return to the club of manager Mark Aizlewood from January 2012. The success of last season in winning the Word Cup, as well as being in the top half of the WPL, figures highly in the text. Chris has, in the past, written books on a sports journalists' year but this is the first he has done on a single club. The text is easy to read and we get to know most of the people behind the scenes as well as those on the playing field. AIRBUS UK Broughton continued their pre-season preparations with an excellent 1-0 home win over local Conference side Wrexham FC, thanks to a second-half goal from Steve Jones. Having narrowly missed out on promotion to the Football League a couple of months ago, they would provide another excellent test as the Wingmakers looked to sustain momentum between their European campaign and the new domestic one. In very warm and humid conditions Airbus were put under early pressure by the visitors, but it came to nothing. It was the Wingmakers who had the first opportunity on 12 minutes when Ryan Wade beat Anthony Stephens to cross, Steve Jones close-range header drawing a point-blank save from Andy Coughlin in the Wrexham goal. On 14 minutes Brett Ormerod forced Wingmakers goalkeeper James Coates to tip over after turning and firing in a shot from the edge of the area. Minutes later Ormerod struck another shot from outside the area, narrowly missing the target. On 21 minutes Wrexhams Jonathan Royle headed over from a corner. Meanwhile Ryan Wades pace was causing Wrexham problems at the other end. Good solo work from Bradley Reid created an opportunity for the Wrexham youngster to have a crack at goal, but he pulled his shot wide of the near post on half an hour. It had been an even game with neither side over-troubling the other defensively. It remained goalless at the break which was a fair reflection of the first-half. There were few changes at the break and the Wingmakers began the second-half in positive fashion Sam Hart getting forward to strike a shot just wide, followed by Lewis Short doing the same. Short was developing into the Wingmakers best threat down the left but was often forced onto his weaker foot. The visitors first change before the hour saw ex -Airbus loanee Steve Tomassen replace Kyle Parle who had picked up a knock. Good work from Ryan Wade cut the ball back to Glenn Rule whose strike was palmed away by Coughlin. The Wingmakers did not have to wait long to go ahead however as, on 63 minutes, Lewis Short pulled the ball back on the edge of the area for Steve Jones to strike low into the far corner. Airbus were deservedly 1-0 up but Wrexham took the opportunity to introduce a raft of strong substitutes including manager Andy Morrell, and other ex-Airbus loan players Nick Rushton and Leon Clowes. Minutes after the goal Wingmakers sub Chris Simm saw a goal-bound shot accidentally blocked close to the goal-line by his own player Lewis Short, as Wrexham were living dangerously at the back. Shortly after a Simm header from a corner was also scrapped away unconvincingly by the visitors. Wrexham player-manager Andy Morrell managed to evade Ian Kearney but struck his shot just wide with 10 minutes to go. With the likes of Morrell, Adrian Cieslewicz and Andy Bishop on, it was a surprise that Wrexham werent asking more questions of the Wingmakers going forward. Young Zyaac Edwards was then introduced in place of Ryan Wade who had caused Wrexham problems all afternoon. Nick Rushtons weak near-post effort was well saved by Coates as the game entered the latter stages. Another Wingmakers academy youngster Josh Muldoon was then introduced to the action with the Wingmakers enjoying more possession in Wrexhams final third. At the other end Robbie Evans tame attempt at goal was wel l-held by Coates with two minutes to go. In the final minute an unmarked Morrell headed wide a chance he would normally be expected to bury. There was some late Wrexham pressure but they could not convert it into an equaliser and that was that.

Wrexhams full-time status might have been expected to give them the edge as the game progressed, but the Wingmakers had delivered a greatly assured performance at both ends of the field and thoroughly deserved their surprise 1-0 win..

Bangor boss Nev Powell has confirmed the registration of three promising young defenders who have been involved in the pre-season matches played so far. They are Dec Walker, Joe Culshaw and Anthony Miley Warrington born Dec Walker made 19 appearances for Wrexham in the Conference during the 2012-13 season after progressing through the Colliers Park academy structure. An attack minded right-back Dec was given a professional contact at The Racecourse in July 2010 and broke into the Republic of Ireland U19s squad for the UEFA Championships a year later - only to be ruled out by injury. He did though appear in both game against the Ukraine in September 2010 including a full debut appearance. Another former Wrexham youngster Joe Culshaw comes from Carrog near Corwen. He also came through the club's academy system but was released as a teenager to join Morecambe, a step up from the Conference to Football League. Defender Joe spent part of last season in the Cymru Alliance with Cefn Druids. Centre-back Anthony Miley is the third newcomer to Nantporth. Last season Anthony played for coast rivals Colwyn Bay and Conwy United having previously played for Bootle. During the 2011-12 season Anthony entered the Samsung competition to Win a contract with Swindon Town and finished in the top ten out of 2500 entrees. The Nomads are pleased to announce the return to Deeside Stadium of goalkeeper, Terry McCormick. Terry previously played for The Nomads between 2008-2010, making over 50 appearances in all competitions and winning numerous player awards in his stint before joining Bala Town. During his time at Maes Tegid, Terry helped guide Bala to the Europa League playoff in the 2011-12 season. Terry joined a number of ex-Nomads under the guidance of Chris Herbert at Conwy Borough in August 2012, before rejoining The Nomads this week, where he will wear the number 25 shirt. Director of Football, Mark McGregor commented, "Terry will offer the club some great experience and will push Jon hard. They should work well in training and I am sure push each other on to be better in all aspects and under the guidance of Neil Ebrell, this will be a big season for both of our 'keepers." Nomads have signed Paul Mooney from Northwich Victoria Paul's performances for Rhyl in the 2010-11Cymru Alliance were simply outstanding. He caught the eye of Football League scouts and he spent a period on trial with Crewe Alexandra before joining Swindon Town. Twenty-two year old Paul is a strong, hard driving midfielder who can play in Central Defence of as a full back. He scores a fair number of goals and Nomads are delighted to welcome him to Deeside.

Leigh De-Vulgt is set for 10th consecutive year at the club THREE players officially re-signed for the forthcoming season before Tuesdays game, as James Bloom, Lee John and Leigh De-Vulgt all put pen to paper. Bloom, 21, made 29 (1) Corbett Sports Welsh Premier League appearances last season, having originally arrived at the club from Gloucester City in January 2012. Leigh De-Vulgt and Lee John both sign on for their tenth year at the GenQuip stadium. First team coach Chris Hughes has been announced as the new head man for the Prestatyn Town academy. Chris will replace John Roberts as academy director after he stepped down from the role due to increased work and travel commitments and the club are thrilled that Chris has agreed to take on the post. An A-licence coach, Chris has Welsh Premier League coaching experience with Caersws and also spent a short time with Rhyl. He joined the Seasiders in April 2010 from Cymru Alliance Buckley Town where he was an integral part of the management team. Chris is a well-respected figure in Welsh Premier circles and his knowledge and experience was crucial to the Seasiders winning the Welsh Cup back in May and overcoming the challenge of Liepajas Metallurgs in the Europa League earlier this month. Chairman Phil Merrick said: "This appointment will only strengthen the great work the academy are doing at the moment and I am delighted Chris agreed to take on the position. Four players who have played in the academy have already had a taste of Welsh Premier football and with Chris at the helm, I am sure there will be many more to follow. "I would also thank John Roberts for all his efforts in helping to make the academy what it is and everyone at the club wishes him all the best in the future."

Neil Gibson: Welsh sides have done themselves proud in Europe

PRESTATYN Towns director of football Neil Gibson believes the much -improved performances of Welsh Premier clubs in Europe this season will help boost the reputation and raise the profile of our national league. Looking back overall on the European experience, Gibson said: Its been fantastic weve really enjoyed it. Im pleased for the club men, not just the playe rs. Im also pleased for the supporters and the long-standing staff and committee and board members whove been at the club through thick and thin. Its lovely to see them experience nights like tonight and last week and the euphoria of getting through a tie, because without people like that the club wouldnt exist. As much as I am pleased for the players and the local lads getting a chance to play at this level, its pleasing for the club as a whole. People like Mark Jones, Leigh Williams and Phil Merr ick are having the opportunity to see their club that they fought so long to support compete at this level. Prestatyns Bastion Gardens ground does not yet meet the criteria to stage a European game, but Gibson longs for the day when that may change. That would be the icing on the cake to play a European match at Prestatyn, he stressed. But inspired by nights, experiences and journeys like weve had this season, the more often we get into Europe hopefully we will be able to build the ground a little bit more and use that money wisely to enable us the year after, or the year after that, to see European football at Bastion Gardens.
