Ubuntu is designed for users of all kinds and is translated into over 40 languages. All of these great features are presented in a stunning display that is sure to impress. The best part of Ubuntu is the fact that it is free of charge and solely aimed at improving your experience in navigating the operating system.
Purpose!
The purpose of this manual is to demonstrate how to properly install and navigate the Ubuntu operating system. This manual provides step-by-step solutions for the experienced as well as the novice individuals interested in downloading and installing the Ubuntu operating system. Individuals of any skill level can follow this manual, although all data on your hard drive needs to be backed up onto an external hard drive or any similar device since installation can wipe the hard drive. Users must be aware that if the steps in this manual are not properly followed and, if important information stored on your computer is lost, Ubuntu is not reliable for the loss or the corruption of the hard drive. Through the use of this manual we aim at improving all users experience with their new operating system. After successfully downloading and installing Ubuntu, we hope that the experience of using your computer is greatly improved!

This chapter will discuss the process of downloading and burning Ubuntu to a CD (compact disk). You will need internet access, a standard web browser, and a storage device in order to download Ubuntu. Then, you will need a blank CD and a CD burner in order to burn Ubuntu to a CD.
Downloading Ubuntu!
1. Navigate web browser to http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop. 2. Click the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS button to download.
! *Note: If your computer is more than 5 years old, please select the 32 bit Operating System

3. Click the Not now, take me to the download to continue. 4. Click Ok to download.

!8 6. In the welcome screen, choose your language in the scroll menu on the left.
! 7. Click Install Ubuntu. 8. Uncheck the two check boxes labeled Download updates while installing and Install
this third-party software. ! *Note: See FAQ if you see a red X in the window. 9. Click Continue.

10. Choose Erase disk and install Ubuntu. ! *Warning: This step will erase all files off the hard drive!! 11. Click Continue. 12. Select the drive in the dropdown menu to install Ubuntu.

1. Click on the map to select your time zone. ! 2. Click Continue. 3. Choose your keyboard layout from the two scroll menus.

Why did Ubuntu crash during the installation after I removed the CD?!
Ejecting the CD or other device that Ubuntu is installing from will cause the installation to crash and possibly corrupt the hard drive. In order to prevent this, place the computer on a flat, stable surface and leave the CD inside the disk drive until Ubuntu is fully installed.

Boot!
To boot is to load information from a device such as a CD or USB drive and then run said information on the computer.
Burn a CD!
To burn a CD is jargon for writing files on a CD for read-only use.
GNOME!
GNOME (GNU Network Object Model Environment) is the graphical user interface used by Ubuntu. The GNOME environment will be your new login interface and desktop.
Hard Drive!
The hard drive is the device which stores information for the computer. Personal documents, files, and programs are stored on the hard drive for your use.
Operating System!
The operating system, in short, is the medium between the user and the hardware and allows other programs to be installed and run. Examples of operating systems include: Windows 8.1, Mac OS X Mavericks, and Ubuntu 12.04.
