Extended Deadline For 2014 Canada
Summer Jobs Applications
Alex Atamanenko, MP for BC Southern Interior is alert-
ing eligible local employers and organizations that the
deadline for Canada Summer Jobs 2014 (CSJ) has been ex-
tended to January 31, 2014. Because the application period
falls over the holidays, Service Canada has extended the
original deadline of January10th by three weeks.
Te CSJ initiative helps to create job opportunities for
students aged 15 to 30 years in their communities. Fund-
ing is provided to not-for-proft organizations, public sec-
tor employers and small businesses to assist with hiring
students who will be returning to full-time studies in the
next school year. Assessment of the BC Southern Interior
applications are guided by local priorities, employment
factors within the constituency, on the job mentoring and
career related experience provided, provision of suf cient
salary and other criteria.
Tis year Canada Summer Jobs applications will be
available online beginning December 2, 2013 and must be
submitted by January 31, 2014. For eligibility criteria and
guidelines for completing the application please contact a
Service Canada Centre or refer to the website servicecan

a historic site, recog-
nized in 2002 as the
birthplace of organ-
ized hockey, yet the
former arena has been
replaced by a parking
lot for decades until
November 27. On that
day, a hockey rink
appeared on the lot as former NHL defenseman Patrice
Brisebois welcomed the public for a free day of skating to
celebrate the return of Kraf Hockeyville, and to illustrate
the importance of funding and maintaining local rinks in
Canada.
A recent survey commissioned by Kraf Canada reveals
the majority (91%) of Canadian hockey parents agree their
local rink is the social hub of their community, yet two-
thirds say these arenas are in need of repairs or upgrades.
Over 90 per cent (91%) of those surveyed say their over-
all community would be negatively impacted if their rink
were to close due to disrepair.
Local rinks are at the heart of Canadian communities
but we may run the risk of losing many of these precious
centres if they are not repaired or restored for future gen-
erations, said Jack Hewitt, Vice President of Marketing In-
sight & Services, Kraf Canada. Kraf Hockeyville engages
Canadians to preserve the spirit and passion for hockey
across the nation, and that passion starts at the home rink.
A hockey legend agrees. I wouldnt be who I am today
without my local rink. Even now, it remains a huge part of
my life, said Wendel Clark, Canadian hockey legend and
Kraf Hockeyville 2014 spokesperson. KrafHockeyville
helps people keeps things afoat. It helps towns keep rinks,
fx them up and keep them community oriented.
Tis year there is an even bigger opportunity for Can-
adas communities to breathe new life into their local rinks
through Kraf Hockeyville 2014, in partnership with the
National Hockey League and the National Hockey League
Players Association (NHLPA). Te program is back and
bigger than ever, awarding a total of $1 million in prizing
to 16 diferent communities, including:
One grand prize of $100,000 in arena upgrades and a
broadcast NHL pre-season game played in the local com-
munity
One prize of $100,000 in arena upgrades
Two prizes of $50,000 each in arena upgrades for third
and fourth place
Twelve prizes of $25,000 each in arena upgrades
Canadian communities are invited to start preparing their
submissions to vie for the title of Kraf Hockeyville 2014 with
the nomination period opening January 1, 2014. Submissions
will be accepted until February 9, 2014. For contest rules and

that he was thrilled when all of the 28 tables for the market
sold out very quickly. Tis shows that vendors are excited
to be in this fair and that excitement is infectious, he said.
He also stated that customers will really appreciate the
quality and diversity of the oferings at the Winter Craf
Fair and knowing that you are supporting the local econ-
omy just makes the whole Winter Craf Fair shopping ex-
perience a delightful activity. Tis market will also be the
last place where you can purchase a $5 ticket for the Get
Your Gear On raf e that EcoSociety has been running for
the last month. Te lucky winner will receive a $200 gif
certifcate for each of the fve participating outdoor gear
shops on Baker Street for a total prize of $1000. You can

You and your wife divorce, and you have
to pay spousal support. She starts living
with another man in a new relationship.
Can you stop paying her spousal support
(maintenance)?
Not necessarily. Your support payments may
not even decrease, even though your exs
new partner makes more money than you. It
all depends on the situation.
Take this recent case. When Mathew and
his wife Jane divorced (all names changed),
he was ordered to pay her $1,800 month in
support payments. Two years later, he asked
the BC Supreme Court to stop or reduce
these payments.
His main reason? Jane and her new
partner Doug had started to live together.
Doug earned $155,000 a year more than
Mathews annual income, which averaged
$119,000 when he got divorced. His ex Jane
earned about $52,000 a year.
Mathew and Jane had been married for 22
years when they divorced, and had two
children. They had separated four years
before the divorce. Theirs was a traditional
marriage when their frst son was born,
Jane gave up her job and became a stay-
at-home mom. She only went back to work
full-time about a year before the separation.
Right before the divorce and support
order, both Mathew and his ex were in new
relationships. While Jane spent considerable
time with her new partner Doug, they werent
living together then. And as to living expenses,
Doug only sometimes paid for groceries.
The court pointed out that to get spousal
support varied (changed), there must have
been a material change in circumstances that
wasnt known or predictable at the time of
the original order something that would
have resulted in a different order originally.
Here, Mathew knew before the divorce that
Jane and Doug had been in a relationship for
a while. And it could be foreseen that they
would start living together.
When Doug did move in with Jane about a
year after the divorce, he still only shared
some living expenses he didnt pay her
any rent, and he wasnt on title to her house.
So her fnances weren`t much diIIerent than
before.
Mathew was four years younger than Jane,
who was 58, and had been continuously
employed for some 37 years. Jane only
had seven years of recent full-time work
experience. She had a shorter work-life left,
and was more at risk in case of potential
layoIIs by her construction frm. Mathew
had a lot more job security, and if laid off,
could claim more compensation.
The initial $1,800 a month support amount
was due for review and re-adjustment in
about another year, and then every three
years afterwards. If there were no other
material changes, the adjustment would be
based on Mathews more recent average
income and spousal support guidelines our
courts commonly use.
Also, the changes in Mathews income and
his ex-wifes income since the original order
were insignifcant.
Given where things stood now, compared to
the time of the original order, the court de-
cided that Dougs moving in with Jane didnt
justify stopping or reducing the monthly
maintenance Mathew had to pay Jane.

Whole School Blue Moon Cafe
Over the past couple of months the Whole School Board
of Directors conducted a survey on how well Whole
School students, who had spent a minimum of four years
in the school, did once they reached high school, college
and university. It was no surprise to them to fnd out that
students who received their elementary education at the
Whole School exceeded any and all expectations.
Te survey caught up with 21 students, some of whom
had just lef the school and are currently in high school
and others who moved to post secondary. Out of the 21
students surveyed, 100% of them had all achieved As and
high Bs in high school and post secondary with many of
them on the honour roll at various institutions.
Many of the older graduates gave testimonials as to how
the Whole School helped them to achieve excellence in
their learning. Here is one testimonial from a 26 year old
university student. I am continually grateful for my experi-
ence at the Whole School. I feel it helped to foster in me an
interest in learning and engaging with the world, academic-
ally and otherwise. I remember when I frst went to college
and many of my teachers seemed impressed with my ability
to think critically and analytically and with my writing skill.
I always fgured the Whole School had a lot to do with that.
Such refections as these were the norm in the survey
and correlate to feedback ofen received about Whole
School educated children from teachers and others who
get to know them once they leave the school. We con-
sistently hear how self-motivated and mature the students

Lights Up December!
On December 15, Joe Hill Cofee House, Rosslands com-
munity showcase for talent from throughout the West Koo-
tenay, will present another great show. Our performers are:
Michael Giford, founder of Joe Hill Cofee House, per-
forming songs from Lonesome Valley, a country operetta
written by Michaels father in 1950.
Te Singing Coyotes, seven harmonious females gath-
ering from far and wide to serenade Rossland. (To make
their long journey worthwhile, the Singing Coyotes will
perform 2 sets.)
Young dancers from Kootenay Dance Works Ali Fer-
guson dancing Dream Catcher, Hollie Arsenault dancing
Fields of Gold, and Bethaney Johnson dancing Ave Maria.
Te Rossland Glee Club, presenting Tribute to Snow,
followed by a traditional French carol, and fnishing with
a gospel Christmas piece that, in their words, will blow
the doors down!

and students free. Joe Hill Cofee House takes place in the
Rossland Miners Hall, 1765 Columbia Avenue in Ross-
land. Doors open at 6 pm, the show starts at 7 pm. Because
of the size our show, we would like to ask that people ar-

Proposed Environmental Focus
Since spring 2013, Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) has been
engaging with Basin residents and organizations to help
renew its water and environmental strategic plans. CBT is
now asking for feedback on the culmination of that input
the draf 2014 2019 Environmental Strategic Plan.
Once fnalized, the plan will guide how CBT supports
activities to strengthen the Basins collective ability to ad-
dress current and future environmental priorities. Te
draf plan sets goals in fve areas: water, ecosystems, cli-
mate change, environmental education and enhancing the
capacities of environment-focused organizations.
Tank you to everyone who has joined the discussion;
your ideas are helping to shape the Trusts environmental
focus for the next fve years, said Neil Muth, CBT Presi-
dent and CEO. We now seek your help again to fnalize
the plan do you feel supportive of this plan, what will
this plan mean to you in your community?
To help shape the goals, objectives and activities in
the draf plan, CBT sought out a range of perspectives.
Residents participated in workshops and meetings across
the Basin, and in a Basin-wide online survey process called
Toughtstream. CBT also consulted with environmental
experts and a range of organizations, plus reviewed tech-
nical documents that identify environmental challenges
in the Basin, and strategic plans from other Basin organ-
izations doing environmental work.

Canadian Holiday Train In Nelson
Te Salvation Army and Canadian Pacifc are proud to
announce the 2013 Holiday Train will be riding the rails
to raise money and awareness once more across the coun-
try about hunger issues. Te Train of Lights brings its
magic to Nelson, Wednesday December 11.
Across the country the need for assistance with food
continues to grow. Here in Nelson the Salvation Army
serves 400 to 500 households every month, through the
food bank, the breakfast program, the school lunch pro-
gram, cooking classes and one-on-one food budgeting.
Tey will also distribute 350 Christmas hampers and will
provide toys to about 400 children this Christmas season.
Tis is the 15th year for this annual rolling fundraiser.
Since 1999, the Holiday Train program has raised about
$7.4 million and about 3 million pounds of food for North
American food banks.
Each Holiday Train has 14 brightly decorated rail cars
with hundreds of thousands of technology-leading LED
holiday lights and designs. As well, the two trains feature
a modifed boxcar that has been turned into a traveling
stage for performers who entertain supporters with a live
festive show for the entire family.
Te request is that you bring a non-perishable food
item, such as canned pasta sauce, canned meat, peanut
butter, rice etc. or a cash donation to the Railway Crossing
at Lakeside Park for the Holiday Train Event at 6:45 pm.

Time Running Out For
Energy Saving Rebates
December marks important deadlines for customers who
want to get money back when they make energy-saving home
improvements. More than 1,500 customers have signed up for
the popular Okanagan and Kootenay Energy Diet programs,
and are now poised to take advantage of rebates. For those who
havent signed up yet, its time to hurry, as the December 13,
2013 registration deadline is fast approaching. To qualify for
rebates for many FortisBC programs, energy-ef cient home up-
grades must be completed by December 31.
Registering for an Energy Diet is a great starting point for
customers who are thinking about making energy-saving up-
grades to their homes, said Tom Loski, vice president, FortisBC
customer service. Te next critical step is to follow through
with the recommended upgrades to enjoy lower utility bills, a
more comfortable home and to qualify for rebates.
In addition to the FortisBC programs, LiveSmart BC ofers
rebates for energy-ef cient home upgrades. Participants have
until March 31, 2014 to complete their upgrades and a post
retroft evaluation with a Certifed Energy Advisor.
Below is a list of programs that are scheduled to end soon. To
learn more about the energy diet in your neighbourhood, visit

Kootenay and Okanagan Energy Diets
Participants have access to up to $6,000 in rebates from For-
tisBC and LiveSmart BC.
Program provides a discounted energy assessment to cus-
tomers with homes built prior to 2006.
Priced at $60, the energy assessment is 85 per cent of the
regular price of $400, and costs even less in communities where
regional governments have topped-up funding.
