of those who have altered their medication have previously had a heart event 12% started taking natural remedies 9% completely stopped taking their medication since watching, reading or hearing about the show Heart Foundation national ceo Dr Lyn Roberts said the organisation has always had serious concerns about information presented in the Catalyst program and now there is strong data to confirm worst fears. The survey also showed that almost half of those who completely stopped their medications didnt consult their GP, Roberts said. What is most worrying is that of the people who have stopped taking their medication, one in four have previously had a heart event, such as a heart attack or stroke. This is extremely frightening as these are the people who are most at risk of having another heart attack or stroke, and they may not survive another one. Extrapolating the data means that we could see up to 2,000 or more heart attacks or strokes over the next 5 years, she warned. Roberts said the results reveal a major public health issue that governments cant ignore.

Australians drop statins

A SIGNIFICANT number of people with high cholesterol have stopped or changed their cholesterol medication as a direct result of the recent ABC Catalyst programs (PD 30 Oct), a report released today by the National Heart Foundation of Australia has shown. Early fears of this possibility expressed by the National Heart Foundation and as criticised by ABCs own Media Watch program (PD 13 Nov) have been realised. Following the program, the National Heart Foundation surveyed 1,094 Australians who have been prescribed cholesterol medication by their health professional to understand the impact the TV program has had. The survey showed: 29% reported after watching the program they were initially confused, worried or scared that they were taking unnecessary medication 25% have seen their health care professional to discuss their medication since the program 22% changed their medication adherence, either by stopping, stopping then restarting or reducing the number of medications taken. IBS FODMAP support

A NEW food certification logo that indicates a given food is FODMAP Friendly (incorporating fructose and lactose-friendly foods) is destined to make life easier for IBS sufferers. The FODMAP Friendly certification was created to help people easily identify and select food products that are low in FODMAPs, which are a collection of short-chain carbohydrates and polyols that trigger symptoms of IBS and other inflammatory bowel diseases. The move has been initiated by dietitian Sue Shepherd, with selected items already featuring the logo and more to come shortly.

Live, love, play, breathe

ChristMas may be a happy time for most in our society but for the two million plus Ausralians with asthma, its a time when dust and pollen can create more wheezing and sneezing than celebration. The National Asthma Council Australia is warning Australians with asthma to approach the festive season with caution, saying decorations, scented candles and even the humble Christmas tree can harbour hidden triggers. Most people are unaware that Cypress and pine trees produce high amounts of pollen, National Asthma Council Australia ceo Kristine Whorlow said. Artificial trees may seem like a safe alternative, but these trees are often used year after year and can accumulate dust and even mould in storage. A new Asthma Australia report on effects of uncontrolled asthma shows high absenteeism, career and negative daily living impacts, with 56% of patients with uncontrolled asthma taking asthma-related time off work. Chemo review report out

ThE Department of Health has published its report into the review of chemotherapy funding (PD 02 Dec), which recently resulted in more than $82m in additional PBS funding for the sector. The new funding arrangements will see pharmacies and hospitals receive $152.66 for every chemotherapy infusion they compound and dispense from 01 Jan 2014-30 Jun 2015. However after this 18 month period chemotherapy funding will be considered as part of any future agreement for pharmacy services under the PBS, the report says. Key findings of the review were that in the past excessive margins available from medicine price discounts had delivered substantial profits to chemotherapy providers. However now that the price disclosure measure has removed these high margins for multibrand medicines, remuneration available through PBS mark-ups and fees under Efficient Funding of Chemotherapy arrangements may no longer be sufficient to adequately meet the costs of compounding and supply for the average pharmacy. The review cited data provided by some pharmacies which showed that there may be a deficit in funding, however the small number of data sets and inconsistencies between reported costs mean its difficult to verify the overall impact of the changes. It also found that there is a high level of complexity in the sector, with various models some of which involve commercial or equity relationships between pharmacists, oncologists and hospitals. Beyond funding, efficiency benefits could be achieved by reducing the complexity and administrative burden associated with chemotherapy reimbursement on the PBS, the review concluded. Mylan acquisition
alPhaPharM parent company Mylan has completed the acquisition of the Agila injectables business from Strides Arcolab, with the US$1.75 billion deal aiming to create a new global injectables platform for the company. Alphapharm says the deal significantly expands Mylans injectables business and also provides access to new geographic markets across the globe. Along with the takeover a number of other commercial enhancements have taken place which will reduce Agilas long-term reliance on a business to business model and increase its value. These changes unlock commercial rights and economics in many of Mylans key growth markets, including regaining full commercialisation rights for most of Agilas US portfolio and regaining significant product rights in Canada, Australia, Brazil, Japan and South Korea. According to Mylan president Rajiv Malik, the Agila deal transforms Mylan into a global powerhouse in injectables R&D and manufacturing, with four dedicated research & development facilities staffed by over 400 scientists, plus thirteen dedicated manufacturing sites in six countries. The transaction gives Mylan more than 1200 approved injectable products, along with 900 more pending global approvals across a broad range of therapeutic categories.

DISPENSARY CORNER
NOt the sort of dietary supplement youd expect. A worker in a US fast food restaurant has been fired after accidentally dropping a partiallysmoked marijuana cigarette into a customers cheeseburger. The incident allegedly took place at a Wendys drive-through eatery in the city of Atlanta, Georgia. The female customer purchased the burger and drove home with the food without realising what had happened until she took a bite from it and noticed a strange odour wafting from it, according to Sky News. When she took the top off the bun she saw the half-smoked joint inside and contacted the police. Officers arrested the 32-year-old employee who is alleged to have admitted to smoking at work. AnD while were on the subject of food, a team in the town of Bryan, Texas has set a new world record by building the biggest ever gingerbread house. Almost the size of a tennis court, the 7m high sweet edifice has earned a special certificate from Guinness World Records officials. It has a fully edible exterior built over a wooden frame, with the gingerbread including about a tonne of butter and brown sugar, more than 7,000 eggs, 3.2 tonnes of flower and 31kg of ginger. Icing and lollies were then added to decorate the amazing construction (below) which has so far survived weather extremes. One problem we did not anticipate was bees on warm days, said spokesman Bill Horton. They have been coming over, getting so much sugar and stumbling around like they are drunk, he said.
