Compare and Contrast Essay The genre that I have chosen is science fiction movies.

Science fiction as a genre or division of literature distinguishes its fictional worlds to one degree or another from the world in which we actually live: a fiction of the imagination rather than observed reality, a fantastic literature. Science fiction is defined as a literary genre or verbal construct whose necessary and sufficient conditions are the presence and interaction of estrangement and cognitions and whose main device is an imaginative framework alternative to the authors empirical environment (Darko Suvin, 1979). Science fiction movie consists of the imagination of human, science-based descriptions of the phenomena where the object or circumstances that occur does not existing in the world yet or otherwise. It can have the story of alien world, time travel or extraterrestrial life forms along with the futuristic elements such as spacecraft, robots or cyborgs. The movies that I have chosen for this compare and contrast essay were I-robot (Laurence & Alex, 2004) and Terminator Salvation (Derek & MCG, 2009). Basically, Irobot and Terminator Salvation were talking about the future technology that human creates which is humanoid robots. In the movie, I-robot, directed by Alex Proyas, story written by Jeff Vintar, Del Spooner (Will Smith) as a detective was investigating the death of his friends, Dr Alfred Lanning (James Cromwell), the co-founder for U.S Robotics and its robots. His death was called a suicide but Mr Spooner thinks otherwise. The story than revealed that robots lead to a larger threat to humanity. Whereas the Terminator Salvation movie, directed by MCG, written by John Brancato and Michael Ferris, John Conner (Christian Bale) leads the Resistance to attack the Skynet base and he discover a human prisoners which is a new type of terminator incorporating

living tissues. Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington) was the result of the research where the Resistance thinks that he is a cyborg. In this movie, the terminator machines will kill or capture every single living human in their sight. There are few contrast appear in this two movies although it have the same genre which is the creation of robots, the creation of weapons and technology and the settings of the movies. The creations of robots in these movies have different functions. In the movie, IRobots, the humanoid robots had been programmed with 3 laws which is firstly, a robot must never harm a human being or through inaction, allow any harm to a human. Second, a robot must obey the orders given to them by human beings, except where such orders violate the First law. Third, a robot must protect its own existence unless this violates the first or second laws. The robots in this movie create to help human to reduce stressed by doing household chores, works, and furthermore. As the latest humanoid robots, the new USR model which is the NS-5, controlled by the supercomputer, VIKI (Virtual Interactive Kinetic Intelligence). For Terminator Salvation, the Skynet creates terminators to destroy the humans. Skynet itself was actually a program that created to control the weapon arms. A lot of people were sacrifice during the war time. The genres of the movies were talking about the robots but they show the advantages and disadvantages of robots. One is created to help and one is created to destroy. Besides, the movies show a very big difference in their weaponries and transportation. The Ns-5 humanoid robots in the I-Robot has no weapon built on their body as this robots were created as the purpose of protecting people from being harm and help the people to reduce the amount of work. But there was a scene where the

supercomputer VIKI went outrageous and all the Ns-5 humanoid robots start harming the human and prison human in the house because of the evolution of the supercomputer. The robots were not arm with any weapon although the human uses fire arms to destroy the robots but only bare hand and leg. In addition, the transportations were very futuristic. The Audi car driven by Mr Spooner was actually floating on road and it can be automatically driven. However, the terminators in Terminator Salvation were arms with weapons. The transportations in terminator also very futuristic but it is much more bigger size than the one in I-Robot which is The Transport who carries The Harvester which catch human and transport the human to the Skynet Base Camp. As all the giant machines keep attacking the humans, they barely survive from it and basically the humans will end up capture by The Harvester. The genre of the movies shows the different improvising of technology and transportation in the future. The movies setting are different as the event happened in different time and places. The film, I-Robot which takes place in the year of 2035 is set in downtown Chicago, Illinois, USA. You can see human and robots walk together and yet the robots were collecting rubbish and walk dogs to the human. The human activity is not much difference from current year but they have more simple life than us as they have robots helping them in every single job without breaking the 3 laws. There were no changes for the skyscrapers as the presence currently. As for the film, Terminator Salvation which takes place in the year of 2018 is set in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. In the film, you see less human wondering around the places as lots of human were kill and the humans who survive has to defend themselves from the terminator. The skyscrapers in

this film were destroyed and what you can see was just the run-down buildings. Almost every scene appear in the movie were deserted and wasted. Conclusion, science fiction movie bring us to the whole new world of imagination. The science fiction movie must be well presented so that the viewers can understand this genre movie and have more expectation for the next coming science fiction movie.
