Executive Summary: The Campus Core Network is about 2 1/2 years old, and some of the Building Demarc

Switches are 5 or more years old. If we started a 4 year Network replacement plan starting this fiscal year, it would mean some of our network equipment would be about 9 years old. Phase I of this proposal would include upgrading part of the campus core to 10 Gigabit Ethernet and Gig Ethernet to the buildings. This upgrade would help the campus community on supporting new technology such as; IPv6, MPLS, Jumbo Frames, 802.1x, etc. Executive Summary: The current backbone network is connected at gigabit speeds. (See attachment A). Currently we have about 150 buildings and 1/4 of them already have Gigabit Ethernet. As additional buildings are Gigabit Ethernet, this will cause additional strain on the core. To accommodate those needs it is important to begin upgrading the Campus Core Network to 10 Gig Ethernet per the topology map. This upgrade would be the first step in providing support for Native IPv6, MPLS and 10 Gigabit across the entire Campus Backbone by fiscal year 2007. The first phase of this implementation would be directed at the Engineering Node to accommodate the Researches immediate needs (See attachment A). Some of the features requested by the Advance Network Group are 10 Gig Connectivity and IPv6 and MPLS support. and they only have 100Mbps connection to the campus backbone while their internal infrastructure is Gigabit Ethernet already. A list of buildings that will receive Gig Ethernet Switches is enclosed in this proposal. By default, all buildings which are connected to the campus backbone in the future will receive dual, 1,000Mb connectivity which may require additional hardware in the distribution layer equipment Network environment o RISE Supernet VPN with 1024 kbps reserved for VC (Axia Real-time Voice/Video Allocation) o Use of Fortinet or equivalent SuperNet router

o Managed network switch such as the Cisco 200 series specific RISE recommendation for a CISCO SF200-24 SLM224GT-NA 24PORT MNG Switch. o Cat 6 or Cat5e network cables with less than 25m distance between the SuperNet demarcation point and the videoconference equipment Network cabling and devices are of mixed quality. Some of the existing system can likely be re-used, and some of it will have to be replaced. Bandwidth demands are expected to rise due to some other projects underway. The Upgrade will be a state-of-the-art, ultra-high speed network comprised of approximately 13,000 km of fibre, and 2,000 km of wireless connections. It will connects more than 300 facilities and end users in the Commission/ offices, it will provide connected offices with committed information rate connections utilizing Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) VPNs, support for Quality of Service (QoS) tagging and more. Connections to the Internet will be made through a SuperNet Edge Device (SED). The assigned interface port on the SED shall be the demarcation point between theCommission local network(LAN) and Galaxy Backbone which is the official ISP. Generally, the SED is a Cisco Catalyst 3550 series router. A customer-owned cable connects a port on the SED to the customer-owned Customer Edge Device (CED). The CED is a router, switch or firewall that connects to the SED. The CED is responsible for identifying and routing VPN connections appropriately, prioritizing and tagging traffic according to customer-defined Quality of Service (QoS) rules and distributing the traffic to the various subnets on the Local Area Network (LAN). The cabling should include provisions for computer stations, servers and videoconferencing facilities as well as sufficient capacity to implement a VOIP telephone system in the future.
