Consumerism

Growth of the population is the major caused for consumerism. About 5 million people were living on this planet in 8000 B.C. the population exceeded 6 billion during 20 th century. Human beings consume less than we do now due to the population number in the past. Also industrial revolution which took a place in 18th and 19th century has big impact on people behavior for consumption. In Britain people used to work on their own farms and produce their own food, but now they totally depend on factories. Western world countries (Canada and America) has more consumerism than any other country in the world. The growth of the population leads to the use of more cars and transportation which is the main cause of the global warming. The huge use of natural resources such as trees for producing paper has a caused global warming. Also the increase in the population has big effects on global warming because we breathe out CO2 which contributes to global warming. Other cause of consumerism is purchasing behavior. People buying more than what they need like some people buy more than one car which forces manufacturers to produce more cars. Other reason is that people buy more food than they need and then they throw it away which force food factories to produce more food and more use on natural resources. Other reason is natural resources which are being consumed by the increase of population. When the number of people increases that means we need more houses and lands and that will force us to cut trees and destroy forests or part of it. Pollution is caused by the increase in consumption. The transferring goods from one place to another will cause air pollution. Also when people buy more than they need that will increase garbage pollution. Also when factories keep producing more and more products that will force them to throw their waste in the rivers. Obesity is also one of the consumerism effects. As we can see that the number of fat people is increasing especially in developing countries while 80% of the hungry children's live in poor countries. All that because the developing countries produce and consume more than what they need.

There are some solutions to avoid consumerism. First if you have problem on purchasing then you should avoid watching advertisements, because many companies pay a lot of money such as Coca-Cola pay on 2010 about $2.9 billion just to make an advertise that can draw some attention while apple and Microsoft combined pay about $2.3 Billion. All big companies such as Marlboro, McDonalds and Coca-Cola are the ones who killed our environment and they know how to control people mind too. We can see that Marlboro put a warning on their products that people could have cancer if they use it but people still using it and at the same time they pollute our air. McDonald is a worst company ever. They use grain to feed cattle in South Americans countries to produce meat for McDonald. Cattle uses 10 times the amount of grain that human do. They produce 145 million of grain while they use 21 million and the rest throw away as waste. Also McDonald meals contained a lot of fat, animal's products, sugar and salt which is linked in heart diseases. Heart diseases alone causes about 180,000 deaths every year. UAE faces two major problems of consumerism which is the growth of population and purchase behaviour. In 1960 the population in UAE was about 89,608 and in 2012 increased to 9.2 million. Also the big change in salary after 2008 changed the purchase behaviour and people in UAE starts to buy a lot of stuff even if they dont need it. There wasnt any consumerism in UAE in the past because there was few people on that land and there wasnt any factories and people and people depend mostly on fishing. In 2008 UAE become the worst ecological carbon footprint per person. All that private jets, public transportation and fuel consumption lead UAE to become one of the worst countries in carbon footprint. UAE has launched ''shams1'' the largest concentrating solar power station in the world to replace the Electricity generators that works on fossil fuel. UAE has new law which is any plastic bag should contain D2W additive because that allow plastic to degrading if we left it in the open air or in the sea. They found that any plastic that doesnt contain D2W additive will remain for 400 years. Each country in the world should focus more on the awareness campaign to their citizens regarding consumerism, because most people dont know that they are part of

consumerism and what is consumerism (am one of those people) which could help to take the situation so serious in future. In future the consumerism will increase in some countries and will decrease on others, because countries with high carbon footprint will force some factories to close or move to other countries with low carbon footprint which in my opinion will never change anything to positive.
