Choose from Puerto Viejos famous black-sand beaches on the southern Caribbean coast to the pearly-white sands of Manuel Antonio. 3-Adventure Tours: Outdoor enthusiasts will be blown away be the sheer diversity of adrenaline-pumping tours. Navigate Class IV rapids on the Pacuare River, scale down a 200-foot waterfall, soar above the jungle on a zip-line canopy tour, or hike beneath the glow of an active volcano. 4-Family-friendly fun: Costa Rica is one of the safest countries for family travel, and kids of all ages adore the myriad activities and outdoor adventures offered. Moreover, many hotels and resorts cater to family travelers with kid menus, onsite play areas and special activities designed for children. 5-Natural Wonders: If youve ever wanted to peer into the depths of an active volcano, relax amid thermal hot springs, or swim in the crystalline waters of a tropical waterfall Costa Rica is for you. No other country packs such diverse terrain and amazing natural attractions in such a small area. 6-Proximity to the U.S.: Exotic as it feels, Costa Rica is a short plane ride away from home. The country is just 2.5 hours from Miami, 6 hours from Los Angeles and 5 hours from New York. And with many airlines offering non-stop flights, you can have your toes in the sand in no time! 7-Incredible Wildlife: With nearly 30% of the country dedicated as national parks and wildlife reserves, wildlife abounds in Costa Rica. Iconic species include howler monkeys, scarlet macaws, blue morpho butterflies, three-toed sloths and humpback whales. 8-Coffee: Your favorite Starbucks brew was likely grown on the volcanic slopes of Costa Rica, home to several blends of award-winning coffee. Even better, the beans make for a great souvenir grocery stores sell both whole bean and ground coffee for as little as $3 a pound! Varieties sold by Caf Britt and Doka Estate are especially delicious. 9-The People: Known for their generosity of heart and friendly nature, the people of Costa Rica who call themselves Ticos are one of the countrys national treasures. 10-The Pura Vida: Once you step foot in Costa Rica, youll understand the meaning of this national motto. Much more than pure life, pura vida is a state of mind an appreciation of lifes simple pleasures. Thanks in part to this pura vida, Costa Rica is consistently ranked one of the worlds Happiest Countries.
For a tasty meal thats easy on the wallet, visit one of Costa Ricas countless sodas small, mom and pop restaurants that serve hearty portions and order a casado. Translated as "married mans meal," a $5 casado will delight your taste buds with your choice of meat (chicken, fish, pork or beef ), rice, beans, salad and plantains. And if you're lucky, your meal will also include a serving of savory picadillo, a hash of perfectly seasoned potatoes or squash. For dessert, look for tres leches a moist vanilla cake made with three milks. Another great option is the local version of a snow-cone, known as a granizado.
Take our advice and pack light for your Costa Rica vacation. We understand that its easy to get carried away with your clothing and camera possibilities, but keep in mind that regional airlines impose strict weight limits (usually a maximum of 25 pounds per person on Nature Air and Sansa) when traveling within the country. Many hotels and resorts provide onsite laundry service for a small charge, and if youre staying on the beach, lightweight, quick-dry clothes are highly recommended. Remember that you can always pick up lost or forgotten items in Costa Rica, at one of the many shopping malls or pharmacies.
There are plenty of reasons why travelers book their own lodgings and tours, but dont rule out the advantages of an all-inclusive vacation package to Costa Rica. Besides saving you the hassle and headache of researching reputable tour operators and highly-rated hotels, a vacation package may actually save you money if your vacation desires include upscale accommodations and plenty of activities in Costa Ricas more popular destinations. If youre looking for a stress-free holiday with everything taken care of by travel professionals a vacation package is definitely worth considering.
What is the green season? Its another name for Costa Ricas low tourism period that coincides with the rainy months of May-November. Dont let a few tropical thunderstorms daunt you; this is one of the best times to visit Costa Rica, as nearly everything is cheaper and less crowded. From hotels and tours to vacation packages, low season rates can be up to 30% less than their high season counterparts. Even better, you get to enjoy the country at its most lush time of year, when every landscape is green from the rains. While there is no way to predict Mother Nature, showers normally occur in the late afternoon the perfect time for a restorative siesta!

Costa Rica is world-renown among tourism destinations for its green policies and ample opportunities for eco-friendly travel. Slated to be entirely carbon neutral by 2021, the country enjoys its hard-earned reputation as a pioneer in Central American eco-tourism. With more than a quarter of its lands set aside as national parks and biological reserves, you can enjoy its natural treasures for many years to come. And by practicing responsible tourism during your Costa Rica holiday, you can reduce your carbon footprint while exploring the countless wonders of this amazing nation.
Planning your upcoming Costa Rica vacation? Weve put together some great travel tips to help you prepare for the trip of a lifetime. While the country is a lot like the U.S. in many ways, there are a few important differences to be aware of, from tipping in restaurants to choosing the best month to visit. Whether planning a three-week adventure or a quick holiday with the family, youre guaranteed an unforgettable experience in Central Americas top destination for fun under the tropical sun.
Turn down your air conditioning, and unplug major appliances not in use during your holiday Consider taking only carry-on baggage; you'll save cash on airline luggage fees Choose an e-ticket when booking your airfare for less paper waste Buy a solar charger for your electronics and phone, and pack rechargeable batteries
In Costa Rica, the Spanish word for tip is propina. And unlike in the U.S., tipping is relatively uncommon outside the tourist industry. For example, most restaurants include a 10% service tax in the bill, so adding an additional 15% isnt necessary. Taxi drivers dont expect a tip either, but always appreciate a little extra when the service warrants it. If you book a nature or adventure tour, tipping your guide is completely up to you, and many travelers feel a $5-$10 tip is appropriate for a particularly attentive guide.
Whether youre on a strict budget or plan to enjoy a luxury vacation, Costa Ricas varied transportation options make it easier than ever to travel responsibly. The countrys leading domestic carrier, Nature Air, announced it was entirely carbon neutral back in 2004. The airline uses biofuel instead of petrol and supports local reforestation projects. Or, travel with others in style in of the nations sustainably certified shuttle bus services that offer daily trips to popular tourist towns. In recent years, an increasing number of local car rental agencies are participating in carbon-offset projects, so be sure to ask when booking your Costa Rica car rental.
Cash is absolute king when traveling through Costa Rica. Though most hotels, stores, tour operators and restaurants accept credit and debit cards, paying in cash will often get you big discounts. The country has numerous banks scattered in every city and town, so exchanging money is a simple affair. You can also use your ATM card to withdraw local colones or dollars; just ask your bank ahead of time about transaction fees. In general, youll always get a better deal when paying with Costa Rica colones, unless the price is advertised in dollars. Having a little of both is always handy, as some stores in rural areas will only take local currency.
ECO-TRAVELER TIPS
Pack a reusable water bottle. Costa Ricas water is generally safe to drink; help cut down on waste by refilling your water bottle straight from the tap. Always try and buy local. Purchasing arts, crafts or food made locally will help sustain the local economy while leaving a smaller carbon footprint. Tour National Parks and Reserves. By visiting Costa Ricas beautiful protected areas, your entrance fee (usually around $10) supports their maintenance and helps protect native wildlife. Consider rural tourism. Rural tourism tours in the countrys less-visited areas are a great way to support environmental education and encourage sustainability while learning about local customs and traditions. Keep Costa Rica clean! Practice "leave no trace", and always recycle your plastic, aluminum and glass products whenever possible.
Gone are the days of expensive international phone calls or slow Internet speeds. Costa Rica enjoys a welldeveloped communications system that is rapidly evolving to meet consumer needs. High-speed Internet (wireless, cable and DSL) is available countrywide, and Internet cafes are a dime a dozen in popular tourist towns. Most cost less than $1 per hour, and myriad hotels offer free Wi-Fi to their guests. Costa Rica supports 3G service (with 4G on the horizon) and prepaid phone cards can be found at both airports, for cheap calls during your travels. Bring your iPhone or Blackberry, just check with your provider on roaming costs beforehand!
Many think that in order to go green while traveling, you have to give up a few creature comforts. In Costa Rica, you wont have to sacrifice anything to travel in luxury as nearly a dozen of the countrys finest 5-star resorts practice environmental sustainability through recycling, using earth-friendly cleaning products and green building materials, creating carbon-offset programs, and by supporting community education. There are some notable resorts that have earned Costa Ricas Five Leaves a top award for eco-friendly practices.
Youve probably heard of the high and low tourist seasons, which correspond with Costa Ricas dry and rainy months. December through April is the dry season, when most tourists arrive. While youll enjoy tons of glorious sunshine, prices are a bit higher and crowds are more intense. On the flip side, the rainy season (aka green season) months of May through October/November are a lot less crowded, and in exchange for some periodic afternoon thunderstorms, youll get lower hotel rates and get to see the country when its green and verdant.
