Mission Bay Cluster Committee Minutes Thursday, November 7, 2013, 6:00 pm Sessions Elementary School Meeting commenced 6:02

pm; quorum for voting could not established due to lack of Barnard representative Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) (Jennifer Tandy) Linda Zintz, our SDUSD presenter for this item was absent due to illness, so Jennifer Tandy summarized this item. Under LCFF, school districts with high numbers of students who are low-income, English learners or foster children will receive additional funds from the state of California. However, each district must develop a Local Control Accountability Program (LCAP) before receiving any money. The LCAP will set priorities for how the money will be spent. LCAP must be developed with input from parents. Amy Redding (SDUSD) estimated that SDUSD will get $37M, but the actual amount will not be known until January 2014. Scott Barnett reiterated that SDUSD has a $90M shortfall this year and will have a shortfall next year as well, so these additional monies will help, but will not eliminate the anticipated shortfalls. Find more information at http://www.sandi.net/lcff and public comments can be sent to LCFF@sandi.net Chair-elect Vacancy (Jennifer Tandy) Jennifer Tandy nominated Maria Mikus for the vacant Chair-elect position, Marcie Beckett seconded. Maria Mikus Leahy was present and spoke briefly about herself. Maria has two children attending Sessions and a toddler at home. She is a sales/marketing professional and her job involves frequent travel. The vote was tabled due to lack of a quorum. PB Schools Fair Recap (Jennifer Tandy) This November 2nd event was successful and fun, and the entertainment provided by our student musicians was outstanding. All schools participated and showcased the fantastic programs in our PB schools. KUSI News covered the event and the news video can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6VUKaVtcCk District Update (Area 3 Superintendent Julie Martel) I am meeting regularly with all principals. Transportation decisions have really impacted PBMS enrollment is down in part due to elimination of some buses. We need help from the district to provide a level of transportation to maintain PBMS enrollment. CPJMA is growing and needs an additional bungalow. Students are now bused to CPJMA and Barnard, and they will need busing to PBMS when the time comes, or PBMS enrollment will suffer. SDUSD Trustee Scott Barnett 58,000 SDUSD students are not attending their neighborhood schools. We should survey parents to find out why. With push for quality schools in every neighborhood, some students are going back to their neighborhood schools. Last year 80 students from Hoover attended MBHS to take advantage of Rose Creek/Bay program. But this year, Hoover is offering its own Ocean Discovery program. Upgrading facilities and programs such as the new stadium at MBHS, the new YMCA at PBMS, the new language institute at Barnard will help attract and retain students. Adding a marine science building at MBHS would be a great attraction.

Cluster Congress Update (Jennifer Tandy) Jennifer, Ernie Remillard and Maria Mikus attended last Cluster Congress meeting. The SDUSD Calendar Committee proposal for a common calendar was discussed. The idea is to have one calendar for all schools, instead of the current two calendars: year-round and traditional. The main changes would be the school year starting in August, several 2- and 3-week breaks during the year, and ending in late June. Jennifer suggested a survey to get parent input and the Cluster Congress is developing one. The next steps for this proposal include a financial cost/benefit analysis and stakeholder input, but the Calendar Committee wants to present the proposal to the Board of Education in December. Input and feedback can be sent to Amy Redding at dac.sdusd@gmail.com. Roundtable discussion of various topics ensued. Next meeting is December 5, 2013, 6pm at Barnard. Adjourned 7:36
