Christmas Mobility Miracle

Keri from Marrakai came into my ofce to see if I could nd a way to transport a mobility scooter from her home in Marrakai to Moulden as she wanted to donate it to someone who really needs it. Of course we said we could take care of that for her!

Keri heard about a woman from Batchelor called Evelyn who is on a respirator and about to undergo lung surgery. Keri and Evelyn have never met. Evelyn will be moving to Moulden to live with her son and family following the operation and will need a mobility scooter to help her maintain her independence and quality of life. Craig from Kennards Hire in Palmerston on hearing Keris story, instantly donated an excellent tilt

trailer with ramps so that I could drive out to Marrakai to collect the scooter. A huge thank you to the Kennards Palmerston Team! Keri was overjoyed to donate the scooter. Evelyn made the big trip from Batchelor to Moulden just to see the scooter arrive. She was brought to tears by Keris act of generosity. It was a beautiful moment.

to connect people in the community and help good things come to life. With a little time and effort, I was able to make both Keri and Evelyns dream a reality. An amazing good news story.

Thanks to Craig of Kennards Hire Palmerston for the trailer

As a local member, I feel it is a critical part of my role

Keri was keen to donate her scooter to someone in need

PARLIAMENTARY UPDATE 28 NOV 2013:

Alcohol Protection Orders

Madam Speaker, I speak in support of the Alcohol Protection Orders Bill 2013.
This governments vision for a strong society is built on valuing an individuals freedom to participate in society. This bill is a landmark piece of legislation which assists us in realising our goal of creating a strong society for every Territorian and every visitor to this great place. A multi-pronged approach to building a strong society is what we are witnessing. As previously stated, this bill is one mechanism among others introduced by the current government to curb the trend of alcohol misuse and social dysfunction, including violent and dangerous crime. APOs force a person to re-evaluate their attitude towards alcohol and will, indeed, provide many with a clearer head to focus on what they value in life, and whether they think their alcohol consumption is negatively affecting them and their loved ones. People bound by an APO are banned from possessing or consuming alcohol and, importantly, are banned from being on most licensed premises. Changing attitudes is a slow process but it is indeed possible with this legislation. Those people served with APOs will have time away from drink and licensed venues to contemplate how they got into that position and how to avoid it in the future. Lia Finocchiaro MLA Member for Drysdale I see that this legislation will be the foundation for a cultural change in regards to the consumption of alcohol in the Northern Territory. As such it would be foolish to expect results overnight.

I would like to publically congratulate all of you for stepping forward to take on this rewarding and challenging task. Chairperson Naomi Lacey Vice-Chairperson Mary Peterson Treasurer Courtney Skye Secretary Laura Bachman This project is about community and is likely to feature a community section as well as personally cared for garden beds.
