French Hussar Regiments and the Colonels who Led Them: 1792 to 1815

Part I: 1st - 7th Regiments

It is my intention to list the colonels who commanded these regiments. Some of them became famous and others remain as statistics on Regimental rolls. Hopefully it will provide the reader with an insight as to these individuals.

1st Regiment of Hussars


Created in 1720 as the Hussars de Berchenay, became the 1st Regiment de Hussars by decree of 1791. Colonels and Chef de Brigade 1792-1815 1792. 2nd Regiment of Hussars


Created in 1735 as the Hussars de Chamborant, renamed the 2nd Regiment de Hussars in 1771. 3rd Regiment of Hussars


Created in 1764 as the hussars de Esterhazy, became the 3rd Regiment de Hussars in 1791.

Born: 28th December 1775 Colonel 3rd Hussars: 1st February 1804 General de Brigade: 1st March 1807 General de Division: 23rd October 1812 Died: 21st January 1855 General Le Brun spent many of his years service as Aide de Camp to the Emperor Napoleon Le Ferriere-Levesque (Louis-Marie) Born: 9th April 1776 Colonel 3rd Hussars: 8th March 1807 General de Brigade: 13th May 1811 General de Division: 28th November 1813 Comte of the Empire: 28th November 1813 Died: 22nd November 1834 Colonels killed and wounded while in command of the 3rd Hussars. Chef de Brigade: La Houssaye wounded 5th October 1799 Colonel: La Ferriere-Leveque wounded 12th August 1809 Colonel: La Ferriere-Leveque wounded 28th November 1809 Colonel: La Ferriere-Leveque wounded 14th March 1811 Colonel: Rousseau wounded 22nd July 1812 Colonel: Moncey wounded 27th June 1815 Colonel La Ferrier-Leveque was wounded on four occasions while he served with the Regiment. His first wound being in 1806 at the Battle of Jena, when he held the rank of Major. He was wounded a further four times during is military career. On the 30th August 1813, 16th October 1813, 30th October 1813, and 7th March 1814. Officers killed and wounded while serving with the 3rd Hussars from 1805-1815. 4th Regiment of Hussars

Created in 1776 as the Hussars de Saxe, and named as the 4th Regiment de Hussars in 1791. Upon its emigration in 1792, the 5th Regiment of Hussars which had been created in 1793 as the Colonel-General Regiment de Hussars and numbered as the 5th Regiment of Hussars in 1791 took their place and became the 4th Regiment de Hussars by Decree of the 4th June 1793. 5th Regiment of Hussars


Created on the 14th September 1783 with the Cavalry of the Legion de Lauzun and numbered as the 6th Regiment de Hussars in 1791. The regiment was re-numbered as the 5th Regiment de Hussars by Decree of 4th June 1793. 6th Regiment of Hussars


Created as the 7th Regiment of Hussars by Decree on the 23rd November 1792, from the Hussars Defenseurs de la Libert et de l'Egaliti. Renumbered as the 6th Regiment de Hussars by the Decree of 4th June 1793. Formed by Decree of 23rd November 1792 as the 8th Regiment de Hussars, from the Hussars de Lamothe. Renumbered the 7th Regiment de Hussars by Decree of 4th June 1793.
