SHPE|UMICH has always been an active member of the university and College of Engineering community. It has strong and well known bonds with SWE, NSBE, TBP, Engineering Global Leadership (EGL), and Latino Student Organization (LSO). Our organization expanded in 2008 and the chapter was awarded Student Organization of the Year by The University of Michigan. Following the 2008 success, the 2011-2012 academic year brought even more recognitions for SHPE|UMICH. The chapter hosted the 2012 Region VI Regional Leadership Development Conference (RLDC)with over 200 attendeesraising the standard for future years. During this RLDC, the chapter received its first Blue Chip Award. Continuing with the chapter success; Paul Arias, as a dedicated member of SHPE|UMICH, received the SHPE STAR National Honor: Student Role Model Graduate Award (2011). In addition to his success, the chapter has taken first place in the case studies competition at NILA 2011, NILA 2012 and RLDC 2011 (Chicago).
Historically, the chapter has been well known for establishing long lasting relationships. In the 2010 we reached out to Western International High School in South West Detroit and began to build our network. In 2011, we solidified the relationship by hosting our first Noche de Ciencia and starting a SHPE Jr. Chapter there. The SHPE Jr. Chapter now has more than 20 active members and is planned to increase significantly by the end of the year. With the revamping of the SHPE Detroit Professional Chapter (SHPE|DPC), we constantly look for opportunities to collaborate. Last year we cohosted Noche de Ciencia and plans are being made to co-sponsor a SHPE Jr. chapter in Cesar Chavez Academy in South West Detroit.

At the University of Michigan, SHPE has continued to show support for the Hispanic community by providing resources to assist members during their college career. Such resources include workshops and general body meetings, where various companies speak about career opportunities, provide resume and interviewing skills workshops, and provide students with a better understanding of the opportunities that come with being an engineer. We not only develop as a community within the university, but also thrive as a familia.

SHPE provides them unique oportunities to develop their leadership and professional skills. Two examples of the before mentioned are the National Institute for Leadership Advancement and the SHPE National Conference. Study Tables
SHPE strives to promote academic excellence among its members as their first priority. Academic success is a strong measure of a students technical competency. To emphasize the importance of academic success, we have hosted different events providing a wide range of resources for our members. Study Tables are essentially study sessions that provide members a private and optimum environment for learning. During these sessions, upperclassmen and graduate students serve as mentors for younger students. This weekly study session expands and provides unique academic resources to our members. Further, the recurring weekly sessions embed rigorous and effective study habits, which many underclassmen seek to develop. In addition, once a month, we carry out Collaborative Study Tables (CSTs), which we do in conjunction with other Engineering student organizations, including honor societies. These events take advantage of the many high-achieving upperclassmen that are in SHPE and other societies, by having them serve as tutors for other students in the College of Engineering.
Academic Excellence
This event is specifically designed to help undergraduates, particularly freshmen and transfer students, succeed academically by providing them practical time management tools, effective study habits, a forum to form study groups, and information about study abroad opportunities. We plan on introducing a mentorship program this year to create strong bonds between upper level students and first year students. These mentoring relationships are intended to focus on: academics, study skills, and day-to-day issues surrounding undergraduate school; career planning and networking; and guidance on personal issues. Students participating in the program will be treated to special cultural activities in and around Ann Arbor. At the University of Michigan, there is a period of time before class registration, called the Backpacking period, which is intended for students to select classes and work a schedule for the upcoming semester. Upperclassmen from the SHPE|UMICH chapter volunteer their time to help underclassmen define a schedule for next semester as well as plan long term course calendars. Our faculty advisor, a Chemical Engineering Department Faculty member, is present at the session to mentor the underclassmen.

Corporate Workshops
One of the main pillars of our society is the professional and leadership development of our members. The conferences sponsored by SHPE National helps us achieve this. In addition, we welcome corporate representatives who wish to carry out workshops regarding interviewing, improving resumes, etc. Every year, we partner with companies to host workshops during our General Body Meetings. Workshops are focused on the professional and leadership development of our membership. The workshop topics include, but are not limited to: resume structure, professional presence, leadership, interview preparation, and corporate culture. These are also opportunities for companies to recruit and advertise their programs and opportunities.
NILA
The SHPE National Conference is a major event for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Inc. and the largest technical and career conference for Hispanic students and professionals in the country. Each year, the SHPE Conference attracts over 5,000 engineering professionals, students and corporate representatives. The conference is an opportunity for engineering companies and corporations to recruit top talent from SHPE membership. It also provides educational, technical, and career opportunities for professional and student engineers. We as a chapter recognize the cost involved in attending the conference, therefore our goal is to sponsor a minimum of 20 members to attend. Sponsored members are selected by academic achievement and high participation within the chapter. The National Institute for Leadership Advancement (NILA) is SHPEs premier leadership training program for chapter executive board members. The Graduate Leadership Institute is open to full-time graduate students. Since its inception in 1986, NILA has grown to become an event widely anticipated by members and highly respected by corporate sponsors.
In 2012, the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor hosted the Regional Leadership Development Conference (RLDC). This regional conference had representation from over thirty SHPE chapters across nine northern Midwest states: Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Minnesota, Indiana, Kentucky, and Wisconsin. The theme of the RLDC 2012 was Rising to the Challenge. The purpose of RLDC is to help improve the leadership skills of SHPE members. RLDC 2013 was hosted by University of Dayton.

Being outstanding engineers is not simply a matter of possessing high technical competency, but it is also a matter of carrying ourselves in a manner that raises our personal standards and those of the people around us. We do this by continually giving back to our communities.
In alignment with the mission of our chapter, the executive board decided to pursue the opportunity to impact the world and the Hispanic community beyond the continental U.S. territory. Hence, SHPE|UMICH made the first volunteering experience abroad to improve the homes of the elderly of a community in San Jose, Costa Rica. SHPE|UMICH volunteers went out to the community and helped in the renovation through various construction projects. This included building or repairing any part of the house infrastructure and/or improving water system. This project was coordinated and managed by Maximo Nivel, an international community service organization. We plan to continue our partnership with them throughout the next few years and continue impacting the world. SHPE Jr. focuses on both enhancing the education of Latino pre-college students and positively influencing them to become tomorrows science and technology leaders. Specifically, SHPE Jr. aims to augment the success of pre-college students by building self-esteem and leadership skills, providing mentorship at a very volatile time in young students life, and increasing college access for Latino/a students by promoting academic excellence. We have established our first SHPE Jr. Chapter at Western International High School in an effort to cultivate the next generation of outstanding Hispanic engineers. We plan to expand to other high schools in the area.
Noche de Ciencias
Shadowing Program
Noches de Ciencias Science Nights is a initiative to promote knowledge and interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) among the Hispanic community. The SHPE|UMICH chapter held Noche de Ciencias at Cesar Chavez Academy High School (CCAHS) in cooperation with SHPE|DPC. The goal of Noches de Ciencias is to inform K-12 students and their families about STEM education and college options through interactive workshops and activities.

In the recent years our outreach program has been limited to middle school or younger. Last year, SHPE|UMICH organized its first ever Shadow Day to target 9th-12th grade students. The aim of the program was to increase Hispanic acceptance and attendance to the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan by sparking the students interest in pursuing a STEM degree and empowering them to become proactive towards higher education.

SHPE BBQ
Soccer Tournaments Every year, we organize two soccer tournaments composed of teams representing Salsa con Salsa
Organized with the Engineering Global Leadership (EGL) Honor Society, Salsa con Salsa is a Salsa dance lesson teaching session accompanied with chips and salsa. History of salsa music is provided as well as a lively atmosphere on campus that promotes cultural understanding through the concept of learn, do, and teach.
The SHPE BBQ is our first major social event, which serves as a way to welcome students to campus, inform them about upcoming events, and equip them with the tools necessary for success at the University of Michigan. It is an event that SHPE members look forward to during welcome week, as it is a chance to reconnect with their SHPE familia and share their summer experiences. For freshmen, the event provides them a first glance on what it means to be part of the SHPE Familia.

Around the world, various cultural traditions mark the beginning of the winter. The purpose of the activity is to raise awareness through the University of Michigan, especially throughout the Engineering campus, about the importance of cultural and ethnic diversity. This goal is accomplished by a celebration of the many diverse traditions and holidays observed by the University of Michigan community.

Besides monetary contributions you or your company can make to SHPE, there are many other ways to engage with and contribute to our Society. I invite you and your company to take full advantage of the options listed below. If you have any other ideas besides the ones below, please let me know as soon as possible. We welcome all types of contributions. SHPE recognizes the effort your company makes to help the society; that is why we provide additional benefits and incentives based on the total monetary equivalent of your contribution.
SHPEs office is undergoing remodelling. Previously, it was used as a storage place. The current executive board wants to change this and make the office a working space.
SHPEs office is in need of a computer, telephone, fax machine, printer, scanner, tablet, video and photo camera, and office supplies. SHPE is trying to modernize and digitize all archives. Therefore electronics such as tablets, computers, and scanners would be extremely practical donations.
