Creator-Creation clash in Mary Shellys Frankenstein

The relationship between a creator and his creation makes you think about God and man, their strong connection and the way this connection works. If we consider the relationship between Adam and God we will discover that at the beginning everything was in perfect harmony, beauty and purity. In opposition to God and Adam are presented Victor and his creation. Their relationship is described as one of hate and shame . Actually, the entire story gives the impression that !rankenstein"s relationship with the monster is built in comparison and contrary to that of God and Adam. Therefore, we can talk here about a strong clash between the creator and the creation. !rom the very beginning we feel a tense atmosphere when Victor creates its #human being. $e feels an%ious, worried and now that he sees his creation almost finished something shadows his earlier happiness. &hy' (ecause the creature is e%tremely ugly and this fact reveals that only God, a superior person can create perfect beauty and nice features of a man. )oreover, Victor has been working for two years to create his monster, while God created Adam in one day. Their first meeting is right after the death of little &illiam, Victor"s brother and he feels disgusted of the creature. $e is simply horrified and re*ects the monster. !rankenstein reali+es that the #abhorred monster,. has killed his brother and this is the moment when their hate takes huge proportions and they find themselves in a huge disagreement. They appear now like enemies and they have nothing in common with the primary relationship between creator and creation settled by God in the Garden of -den. At one point, we could say that it is still a hidden part of their hearts which has not been discovered, because they talk to each other revealing the sensitive

and fragile side of human beings. The monster opens its heart and shares its feelings and fears with !rankenstein and wants to make a deal with him #the picture I present to you is peaceful and human . and there is a moment when Victor reacts and feels pity for the creature/ #0itiless as you have been towards me, I now see compassion in your eyes1. !urthermore, he agrees on creating an -ve to the monster, but he soon reconsiders and this will determine #the wretch to start again a war against Victor. They are both filled with #a feeling of furious detestation2. If it were not for that glimpse of hope that their relationship could get better, we could easily assert that their relation is a flat one, with no changes, only a hate which enforces more and more and there is no place for other feelings. There is an impressive replica e%change between the two characters. (oth Victor and the monster blame each other for the situation/ #3ursed, cursed creator. &hy did I live'45 #3ursed be the day, abhorred devil, in which you first saw the light6 3ursed be the hands that formed you6 7. In my opinion, this is the highest level of their detestation because it is a direct way of sharing their beliefs. In addition to all above, it is worth to be said that this relationship also implies the idea that man are not made to give birth to a human being, that they cannot handle this kind of situation. In order to make a relationship work, you have to learn to accept the others as they are 8no matter how ugly or beautiful9, you must have a lot of patience and you also have to overcome their flaws and weaknesses. Victor does not know that the only solution to make this relationship a normal one is to let him a little bit down and try to fulfill the needs of his creature, to make him a better person. Victor !rankenstein does not know how to be a #real God for his creation.

Again, if we take into consideration the religious part of the novel, Victor"s attempt to create a human being can be regarded as related to the (iblical story of #The Tower of (abel. God does not allow us to intervene in $is perfect work. $e has the power to destroy all things created by man and punish him severely. !rankenstein could also be regarded as a God in the novel, a God who abandons his creation, if we think about the historical conte%t of those times. The -nlightenment is said to be an era of challenging tradition, a period when people :uestioned everything. 0eople used to believe, at that time, that God only created the world and $e is no longer a part of it. This kind of god describes the best the attitude of Victor, who abandons his creature. At this level, the relationship between !rankenstein and the monster works as a product of technology. There are plenty of debates on the position of Victor towards this #wretch, as he calls the creature and vice versa/ #;o your duty towards me and I will do mine towards you<. This time their relationship works as a pact in which both sides have to accomplish a promise. !or e%ample, Victor has to promise the monster that he will create a female for him and the creature guarantee him that he will leave the country and let him alone. =bviously, the pact has no fulfillment. The end of the relationship creator>creation in )ary ?helly"s !rankenstein is a tragic one/ the creator dies, being defeated by the power of the monster. Victor"s desire of creating a powerful and invincible person destroyed him in the final. The whole relationship between Victor and its creation and the creator> creation clash can be confined to a simple, but meaningful statement of the monster/ #@ou are my creator, but I am your Aord.
