After registering third and fth-place nishes at the Mountain West indoor and outdoor championships, respectively, last season, the Wolf Pack will look to build on their success as one of the universitys most successful teams

MENS BBALL BEATS UNLV
On Jan. 8, Nevada saw its
first victory against UNLV
since Nov. 26, 2005. The Wolf
Pack beat the Rebels in the
Thomas & Mack 74-71. Senior Deonte
Burton led Nevada with 29 points, and his
dunk in the second half with the alley-oop
from Marqueze Coleman made ESPN`s
Sportcenter Top Ten at No. 2. Junior AJ
West also shined with 11 points, nine
rebounds and five blocks.
AJ WEST CLEARED
The Wolf Pack made the
announcement that center
AJ West was cleared to play
on Dec. 18. He`s been a
major contributor to the Pack`s success
in the Mountain West Conference with his
rebounding and defense. He`s only played
in seven games and is already leading the
team in rebounding with an average of 6.9
and has a total of 15 blocks.
DIVERS GO TO CHINA
Over the winter break the Nevada
divers travelled to China for a
training trip. They did a lot of
platform because they don`t have
that in Reno according to senior diver Stephanie
Hansen who wrote blog posts that were
published on the Nevada Athletics website. The
divers also got to do some site seeing by visiting
the Great Wall and the famous Water Cube pool
from the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
SAMARITAN'S FEET
Nevada basketball head coaches
Jane Albright and David Carter
have been leading the way for
Samaritan`s Feet`s efforts. They
hosted Barefoot Basketball games on Jan. 8
and Jan. 11 to raise awareness for the global
non-proft organization aimed at providing
shoes for impoverished children. Albright
and Carter each donated each donated $500
to purchase shoes from the Nike Store at
Legends Marina.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
DEFEATS NO. 65 SJSU
On Jan. 15, Nevada defeated
the nationally ranked San
Jose State University 4-3. The
Silver and Blue (1-1) came from behind
to see victory after a 1-hour, 10-minute
rain delay hit during the middle of singles
action. There were standouts from Monika
Magusiak, Michelle Okhremchuk, Sheila
Morales Hidalgo and Beatriz Garcia Planas
for the Pack.

on Jan. 10. It was its first
competition back since Nov.
24 when Nevada had a strong
performance at the Wildcat
Invitational with three top eight
finishes in the platform event.
The team was defeated at UC

caused them to drop to 4-3 in
dual competition. The Pack
divers did not compete at the
event because they were on a

months reprieve. It opened the
season at the Jackson Open
on Dec. 6. Based upon last
years performance it looks
like the Pack has a high chance
of seeing a bright second
season in the Mountain West
Conference. It had a successful
run last season where it
finished in fifth place out of
nine teams when it was initially
predicted to finish in seventh.

teams have remained in action
during the winter holiday.
Since the break kicked off on
Dec. 18, the womens team has
competed against six other
opponents and saw three
wins and three losses in these
matchups. After the Packs
last game against Boise State,
senior Danika Sharp sunk three
out of six three pointers, which
gave her 164 for her career. She
is now tied with Johnna Ward
for second all-time in Nevada
history. Following a 76-72 win
at Utah State and a 67-64 loss
to Boise, the Wolf Pack will
return home to take on Fresno
State and Wyoming.
