1 THE HISTORY oFMULTIMEDIA

1.1.1 The History ofMultimedia
Computerswith multimediafeatures were introduced in the 199OEs.Before that, there was no technologycapable of providinginformativemultimediaat an affordablecost. In its early days, multimediatechnologywas not very well received

by the massesespeciallyamong skeptical membersof the

academia.

Multimedia technology was considered to be an invention gimmick of the computer industry. Nowadays, the view towards the importance of multimedia is very different. For the past decade, this technology has been studied and explored and now, multimediais one of the main components of convergenttechnology.

Thefirst personal computer wasmarketed. It hada low processing powerandwas usedmainlyfor accounting and
inventory.

Thestorage capacity of the hard-disk was increased. Computers coulddisplaysimplegraphics andwereusedfor statistics andforecasting.
Computers werecapable of displaying colors, moresophisticated graphics, animation andsound.Theywereusedin wordprocessing anddesktoppublishing.

Computers at this stagewerecapable of integrating digitalvideo, audio, animation andtext in a digitalenvironment. As a result,it increases the emphasis on communication andsharingof information throughnetworks suchas the Internet.

Interactive :

Each multimedia application involves interactivity with end-users.

Users can take part actively in the multimedia applications and not passively as in the conventional components of media. This is because the

usershavetotal controlover the applications. Interactivity can be simple, such as open/write/send an Emailthroughweb.

co-Rom (Compact Disk ReadOnly-Memory) isthe basic

hardware of a multimedia computer system.Compact disc technology has successfullyincreasedthe capacityof the computerfor storing and retrieving
CDROM's main advantage, besidesits speed, is its ability to store

moredata. Usuallya CDROMcan store650 megabytes of dataon its single side. This makes it the main choice for softwaredevelopingcompanies becauseof its ability to transfer a big amountof video, audio, graphicsand
animation data into their software.
