San Salvo dates from the Roman Empire and was used to connect the empire with the Balkans, it enjoyed one of the Adriatic ports enabling commercial trading. Today the city has numerous archaeological sites tracing this history. Recent socio-economic developments are linked to the glass industry. This industry sustained and maintained stability of population through diverse crisis. The city of 18000 people permeates by its strong infrastructure the late success of making windshields for the whole of Italy. The competition brief regards the archaeological site in piazza San Vitale, Parco archeologico del Quadrilatero, located between the 13th century church of San Giuseppe and the city council o!ces at the conjunction of two small public spaces. Our design concept is inspired with this historical and physical context; it wishes to materially express the current state of the city and to connect the two adjacent public space. These two ideas are developed through two conceptual gestures; 1/ The ground is lifted to uncover an archaeological site; this lifted ground becomes the roof of the architecture and materials used are the same san pietrini tiles seen in the two piazza. A roof garden is place at the edge of the lifted ground replacing the balustrade. This intervention helps the use of a continuous space while protecting thoroughly the Roman Mosaic. 2/ Glass bearing wall support the lifted ground; this structure symbolises the actual moment of history (i.e. glass industry supporting socio-economic development) and creates a beautiful play of light textures. The glass is layered horizontally, visually and physically compressed by the roof. Twin steel pilasters reinforce the glass and provide slots to peek inside the architecture. The entrance is purposely placed in the middle (third) piazza, to convey a strong identity of this third piazza. The larger piazza faces the church, the second faces the town hall and this third one was in between with less character. Our intervention provides a strong entrance to the archaeological site with plenty of dedicated space in front.
