The Economics Department offers concentrations in Economics and Financial Economics. Students looking for a more enriched curriculum have the opportunity to take either program for Honors. For admission to our concentrations, students must achieve a grade point average of C or better in at least 3 of the following courses: ECO 108, ECO 207, ECO 209, ECO 230, 1 semester of calculus. For students placing out of any of the above courses, suitable adjustment will be made. Courses taken for pass/fail credit will not provide concentration credit. Please Note: When Declaring Your Major: You must print a copy of your unofficial transcript (from your access) and bring it with you. AN ADVISOR WILL NOT SIGN YOUR FORM WITHOUT YOUR TRANSCRIPT. Requirements for a Concentration in Economics

Requirements for a Concentration in Economics with Honors

Students seeking an enriched curriculum can pursue a concentration with Honors. The Honors Program requires additional coursework, as well as enrollment in "Honors" designated courses. Honors graduates will also write a research paper in Senior Seminar. Further Program Details and Clarifications

1. Calculus Requirement Mastery of 1 year of calculus (succesful completion of MTH 143, MTH 162, MTH 172 or equivalent). If you take MTH 141 you will need to take a total of three semesters of calculus (MTH 141, 142, and 143). The minimum requirement is that you complete through MTH 143. It is advised that you fulfill your Math requirement as early as possible. Students considering graduate work in economics should plan additional training (see: Mathematics Training for Students Interested in Economics.) Students can substitute transfer courses if the Mathematics Department determines that the transfer course is comparable to UR calculus offerings.

2. Overlap Policies

No more than 3 courses between a major and a separate/double major.

No more than 2 courses between a minor and a major.

No more than one course between a cluster and a major or a minor.

The calculus requirement is exempt from the overlap rule.

3. Elective Economics Courses

Courses that count towards the concentration may not be taken pass/fail or S/F. If you do not get credit for ECO 108, then you must take an additional 200-level course in its place. ECO 394 Internship does not count as an elective for the major. ECO 230 (Economic Statistics) does not count as an elective for the major. The only Simon School courses that can be used as Economics electives are those Simon School courses that are cross-listed as Economics (Eco) courses, Fin 205, and Fin 206. Fin 204 cannot be used for Economics elective credit. Economics courses at other institutions can count as electives only if they have a pre-requisite of introductory microeconomics or introductory macroeconomics. Eight credit courses count as one elective. Graduate economic classes (400-level courses and above) count as electives. You must

obtain permission from the instructor to take a graduate level course. Students enrolled in the Simon School 3/2 program may use up to 2 economics based graduate level Simon courses to fulfill their concentration requirements. ECO 390 can be used once as an elective course.

4. Allied Field Courses Students are required to complete two 200-level (or above) courses in the same Allied Field. Courses that can be counted as ECO electives may NOT be used as Allied Field courses. Acceptable Allied Fields: a. Anthropology b. Computer science c. History d. Mathematics (above 172) e. Political science f. Psychology g. Sociology h. Statistics (Stat courses required for the concentration or that overlap with ECO 230 can not be used) i. Simon School Courses (FIN 205/FIN 206 may NOT be used, as they are ECO electives) Students may use two courses from different allied fields that have a coherent connection to each other and to the study of economics. Students must petition the department for approval of the courses. Statistics courses that are required for economics concentration, or that overlap with ECO 231, do not count toward the allied-field requirement.

5. Upper Level Writing Requirement students must complete two "W" courses offered by the Economics Department. Normally, one of these will be ECO 231W. Independent Study and Internship courses can be taken for W credit with permission of the instructor.
