OVERVIEW This newly created VP, Current Affairs and Documentaries position will re-imagine journalism and invent new ways to drive citizen engagement in Ontario.

THE ORGANIZATION TVO is embarking on an exciting, new strategic direction with an ambitious five year vision that defines TVO as a successful 21st century digital media organization. This plan comprises two main pillars of delivery: 1. 2. Digital Education; inside the classroom, outside the classroom and abroad. Current Affairs; leveraging TVOs brand of Ontario perspective in-depth, current affairs to strengthen reach and impact.

For over four decades, TVO has empowered Ontarians through educational media. TVO is an innovative alternative to commercial broadcasters. It has evolved from a single TV station to a fully digital media organization for the 21st century. TVO reaches more people in more ways than ever before with quality content that makes you think. TVO builds citizen engagement through programs like The Agenda with Steve Paikin that provide in-depth discussion on-air, on-line, on mobile and in communities across Ontario. TVO helps people understand the world through factual and documentary programming that tells Ontarios stories and provides every citizen a window on the world.

THE POSITION TVO is seeking an innovative leader with deep journalistic experience, who thrives on complexity, and who can lead the Current Affairs and Documentary staff forward in creating and distributing content to strengthen citizen engagement and increase understanding of the major issues of the day for Ontarians. The VP Current Affairs and Documentaries (VP) will re-imagine and invent new concepts and offerings for TVOs digital public space around current affairs and citizen engagement. The VP will bring to bear strategic innovation skills and business acumen in the digital space. She/he will empower employees to deliver the TVO strategy and to thrive in an organization that embraces continual change. The VP will continue to build TVOs comprehensive current affairs brand by expanding the dissemination and reach of its current affairs programming and exploiting the new journalism value chain to support sustainable new content creation, reach and impact. The VP Current Affairs and Documentaries will work in close collaboration with the VP, Revenue, Marketing & Product Development, and with the VP Strategy, to bring new products to market. The VP partners collaboratively with other internal departments to implement all strategies. RESPONSIBILITIES Accountabilities Lead all aspects of the current affairs offering. Lead development and growth of new markets for current affairs Expand the dissemination and reach of TVOs current affairs programming by making it available on all platforms (including mobile) to provide Ontarians with access anytime and anywhere. Programming includes The Agenda with Steve Paikin and TVOs note-worthy documentaries. Also includes dramas and factual programming. Imaginatively build the public digital space to increase involvement and interactivity with audiences to strengthen engagement and increase understanding of the major issues of the day facing Ontario citizens Actively establish collaborations and partnerships that align with TVOs public policy mandate to generate new revenues that fund new content and strengthen the financial sustainability of the organization. Work in close collaboration with the VP, Revenue, Marketing & Product Development, and VP Strategy, to ensure all product offerings meet TVOs objectives with respect to public value added. Work in close collaboration with all members of the Executive Management Committee (EMC) to ensure all products, services and activities are strategically aligned with TVOs vision and mission and that resources are allocated effectively to meet financial objectives, strategic priorities and marketplace challenges and opportunities. Provide ideas and intellectual leadership for short-term tactics and long term vision for area of responsibility.

Administration Formulate and recommend budget and objectives for the department and control the results according to these objectives. Coordinate planning, administration and finances of the department and ensure their control. Develop, plan and coordinate projects toward on-time and on-budget successful implementation. Ensure that there is clear and consistent communications to staff and the EMC Speak to private and public organizations and to the media if called upon to do so.

QUALIFICATIONS A minimum of five years experience in a senior management/leadership position in journalism or other relevant media. Experience in broadcast journalistic management and/or experience in print, online and/or digital journalistic management and leadership. Understand and uphold the values of journalistic independence and integrity. Entrepreneurial, strong business skills and knowledge, executive level business acumen. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively Proven ability to manage and lead in a complex environment. Ability to work in an open culture must be comfortable with transparency. Familiarity with the history, culture and issues of Ontario A university or post-graduate degree, or experiential equivalent.
