Functional Description
The Faraday Laws of Induction provide the basis for the electromagnetic flowmeter measurements. A voltage is generated in a conductor as moves through a magnetic field. This measurement principle is applied to a conductive fluid which flows in a pipe traversed by a magnetic field, which is generated perpendicular to the flow direction (see Schematic). The voltage which is induced in the fluid is measured at two electrodes located diametrically opposite to each other. The signal measurement is made capacitively, i.e. the electrodes do not come in contact with the fluid. Each electrode forms a coupling capacitor with the interior wall of the metering spool, on which the signal potential exists, whose dielectric is the liner material. The flow rate proportional measurement signal is fed to the input of the integrated preamplifiers over this coupling capacitance. The signal voltage UE is proportional to the magnetic induction B, the electrode spacing D and the average flow velocity v. Since the magnetic induction B and the electrode spacing D are constant values it follows that a proportionality exists between the signal voltage UE and the average flow velocity v. The equation for calculating the volumetric flow rate indicates that the signal voltage UE is linearly proportional to the volumetric flow rate. This induced signal voltage is converted into scaled, analog and digital signals in the converter.

Installations in Larger Size Pipelines The flowmeter primary can readily be installed in larger pipeline sizes by utilizing reducers (e.g. flanged reducers DIN 28545). The pressure drop which results from the reduction can be determined from the Nomograph Fig. 5. The pressure drop is determined in the following manner:
