PERFECT PLAYGROUND MARKINGS

BY SOPHIE FURNIVAL We have had some nice surprises on our infant and junior playgrounds with some brand new playground markings! Everybody has had lots of fun because they can make up new games. Theres numbers, letters, roads, lines, hopscotch, tracks and more! games. We are very grateful to the PTA who raised a lot of money to pay for this and we are all very glad we have them. THANK YOU to the PTA!

School council is a council for kids and we have a new one every year at Bickerton. This year, there are nine special kids who play a part in the council. They have a talk with Mrs B about how to improve school or what is good about school. Sometimes they organise fun events, like last years Cookie Day and Wacky Hair Day. To be voted on the council, you have to say a speech in front of your class in September and hope you get voted on! This year, the school council members are Class 2: Casper Armstrong and Molly Fowles Class 3: Molly Tudor and Jakob Diamond Class 4: Thomas Beasley-Eades and Lily Gorman Class 5: Anna Davies, Ewan Weetch and William LithgowSmith So remember to go and tell them all your ideas about our school!

We asked some people for their opinions about the new markings. Sasha told us When we are not on the field, it can sometimes get a bit boring on the playground, so we are very glad now we have our markings. Its made it a lot more fun and we can make up our own

CRACKING CHRISTINGLES

BY ZOE VAUGHAN & SASHA PRICE

BICKERTON GOES BANANAS!

BY YASMIN PALMER

This year, we had our Christingle service once again at Bickerton Church. Class 5 made all the Christingles. These are some of the songs we sung: Silent Night, Candle in the Window, Walk in the Light and Hope of Heaven. We took a risk giving the candles to the little ones but the church is fortunately still standing! It was a fun and exciting night! It was the best!!

Bickerton went bananas for a day when every class got a box of bananas from Cholmondeley! We got the bananas from Tough Mudders, an event at Cholmondeley Castle. They had left-overs so they gave them to us! Everyone took 1 or 2 bunches, but Lauren Turnbull ended up with about 5 bunches. Her mum told her to get more! Ha Ha Ha! Issie said I thought it was very funny having so many bananas in school. Well there we go, well all remember the day Bickerton went bananas!

OLIVERS SECRET TALENT

BY SOPHIE FURNIVAL One of our pupils at Bickerton has succeeded in his auditions and has got his role for a play called The Widowing of Mrs Holroyd. When he was doing the play, Oliver had to leave school at 2.50pm because the rehearsals were at Newcastle-under-Lyme. He played a role as Jack and has a sister Minnie. I asked Oliver some questions and here they are. How do you feel? Amazed because I got through the auditions! Which is your favourite part of the play? When Clara and Laura got attacked by a rat! How long have you been rehearsing? A couple of weeks. Were so proud that we took the South African teachers to go and see it and some of the teachers too. Well done Oliver, what a star!!!

BRICKY BEESTON!
BY TOM BEASLEY-EADES

On Wednesday 12 September, Class 4 went on an amazing trip to Beeston castle for their topic, Local Lives. We are learning about castles and churches. We sketched part of the castle and then we met our guide, Sabine. She met us at the ticket office and we learnt all about the history of Beeston Castle We asked Mrs Chesworth and Mrs Eccles for their thoughts

about Beeston. It was great fun to take Class 4 on such an exciting trip! they said. The view was amazing and we could see eight different counties from the top! We learnt lots about Beeston. Mrs Chesworth added I found about that the medieval toilet was called a garderobe! Thanks Mrs C and Mrs E for taking us!

Miss Clay has been teaching us to play the recorder and other instruments like the saxophone and the clarinet and after all their hard work, the children put on a wonderful concert when they all played their own instruments. The audience loved the concert and everyone played really well! And they cant wait to do another one! Thank you Miss Clay! (I was very impressed and cant believe how much the children have learnt in a short time! Its not easy to learn an instrument and perform with it. WELL DONE ALL! Editor)

AMAZING ALAN
BY ISSIE HARMAN Bickerton has had a very special visit from our School Laureate, successful childrens author Alan Durant. On Alans visit to Bickerton School in November, the theme was the London 2012 Olympics! All classes got a good chance to work with Alan. He spent two days in school and visited each classroom with a different surprise! He was very kind and we all welcomed him into the school. He had travelled from Brighton, so we were very happy to have him at Bickerton. At Friday sharing assembly, some classes shared their Olympic writing. Some people did poems and some did stories. Everyone was very excited with him coming to the school because he is very special to us. Everyone said a lovely goodbye and a thank you for coming! (A special thank you to Mr and Mrs Machlachlan (Thomas in Class 1s mum and dad) who lent us Olympic flags, mascots, photos and video clips to help inspire us. Also thanks to the PTA for funding this project! Watch out for the upcoming book containing all the finished Olympics writing from across the school! - Editor)

A FABULOUS FAIR
BY SASHA PRICE & JESS FIELD
Every year, we have a Christmas Fair which is lots of fun and this year was no different! In Class 1, we had a special visitor: FATHER CHRISTMAS! Mrs. Tudor and Mrs. Latham were elves for our amazing visitor. Class 5 got to run their own stalls, such as games, hairspray, tattoos, facepaint nail varnish and crafts. The hall had stalls with food and drink and they also had a raffle. Some people won twice, lucky them! Class 2 had loads of other stalls including toys, jewellery and the very popular jam jar tombola. We interviewed Mrs Tudor and she said It was a fantastic fair, everyone had fun and the presents from Santa were excellent! Mr Richardson added I absolutely loved it! and Mrs Chesworth told us It was a great atmosphere around the school! Thanks to the PTA for organising it all and HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

SHEEP VISITS BICKERTON

BY YASMIN PALMER & JESS FIELD
On Monday 12th November, we had an unusual visitor at Bickertona sheep! The infants spotted it first at afternoon play. It was just loose on the road! Then Class 5 came back from swimming and saw it too. Everyone thought it was from Lucys farm and so did Lucy, but it wasnt! She told us I thought it could be Barbara , because she is black and chubby with two lines on her neck. Mrs B and Mrs Latham had to chase it on to our field so that it didnt get hit by a car! It ended up staying there for a while because no-one knew who it belonged to! In the end, Christys mum said she would look after it so Bob and Zoes dad came and took it there in his trailer. What an adventure! We think the sheep liked her time on our field as she didnt seem too keen to leave and kept running in the nature area!

BRILLIANT BOXES
BY SASHA PRICE & SOPHIE FURNIVAL
Once again we have been doing the Operation Christmas Child shoebox appeal for the poorest of children in the world. Its a lovely thing to do, you get a shoebox and fill it with small gifts for a child. We have successfully managed a massive amount and the grand total of shoe boxes is .. 85 !!! Mr Sweetnam has been swamped with shoe-boxes all in front of his office window! I bet he is glad to

be free of all those shoeboxes! All of Class 5 helped gather the shoeboxes for the man to take away. Some people couldnt even reach to get the top shoeboxes as the pile was so high!! We hope all the children will have their wonderful gifts at Christmas and they will know we were thinking of them. Thank you to everyone who helped!

WE WANT TO RIDE OUR BICYCLES!

BY DANIEL JONES
In October a man and woman visited our school from the National Cycle Museum in Wales. Class after class, they showed us the bikes they brought in such as the bone shaker, the penny farthing, the safety cycle and the tandem trike. We also saw the carbon fibre racing bike that Olympic Champion Chris Boardman won an Olympic gold medal on. (It was very valuable, so we had to be careful with this one!) Some of us got to sit on the bikes or even ride them. It was very interesting to see how bikes have changed over years and how much more dangerous they were in the past!

Class 5 have been using the Cholmondeley minibus a lot this term because they had been invited to go and look round some local farms, like Bournes of Bickerton, Egerton farm and Duckington Grange. They didnt just go for a look at some cows and potatoes, they went because their topic is Local Lives and they were preparing for a night of festive fun called Come dine with us The farms we were going to were donating potatoes (Duckington Grange) and beef (Bournes of Bickerton) so they wanted to know where our local food comes from. At Bournes of Bickerton, they went round and looked at lots of cow and ate cow food and milk powder! They even got Mrs. Tedham in a cattle crush! At Egerton farm, they learnt how milk got from the cow to the bottle. At Duckington, they saw how the potatoes got sorted and even got to stand next to a combine harvester! INTERESTING ICE CREAM FARM

BY ROSS THOMASSON
This year, Class 5 visited the ice cream farm in Tattenhall to learn about how ice cream is made and to look for ideas for their project Come dine with us. First, they watched a video about a talking cow who explained how the ice cream is made. Then, they looked at the amazing descriptive words that they use to describe their ice creams. Next, they actually got to have an ice cream and everyone explained how great they were and how much they enjoyed them. After that, they had some time left so they decided to go on the climbing frame and everyone loved it!

FESTIVE FEAST
BY ROSS THOMASSON, DANIEL JONES & ISAAC DAKIN On Tuesday 4th December, Class 5 pupils from Bickerton Primary School made a fantastic feast in the school hall for all of their parents and teachers. After looking at local farms and businesses they created a menu to show off the amazing produce on their doorstep. Cracking Class 5 had thought of everything, transforming their boring school hall into a wonderful winter wonderland, with fun napkins and origami boxes with a hidden treat inside. They even made their own classic Christmas candles with the very talented Mrs Blake, creating a festive glow. The super students served up some winter warming mulled wine, packing the classroom full of fun and laughter from their delighted parents. Earlier today we spoke to Mr. Sweetnam and he said The evening was fantastic and the setting was great. The children created a fun and festive atmosphere The talent of these superb students doesnt stop there, calculating ratios and costings, in addition to creating professional luxurious sounding menus. The service was great. You would have thought they were professionals (having been trained by local restaurant A Table at Eatons). To gain inspiration for their menus, the children visited a number of local farms and businesses Their festive menu consisted of a mouth watering three course extravaganza. To start the parents were treated to the creamiest butternut squash soup Then the children presented a succulent steak and ale pie with crispy wedges. To top this delicious dinner the pupils finished with a deluxe chocolate brownie with a drizzle of chocolate sauce. Class 5 really did get 10/10 and everyone was so impressed. Mrs Chapman said I am so proud of Class 5. They worked so hard to create a magical evening. They are superstars!!!

FOR FIFTY-FIVE!

Come Dine With Us was an amazing success, so Class 5 would like to thank all of the local businesses that very kindly helped us out or donated things. Not only was Come Dine With Us very fun, it also showed all the parents and teachers what we have been learning about in Class 5. Many thanks to all those who helped for their tips and inspiration! We couldnt have done it without you! And a special thanks to Mrs Chapman who arranged the whole thing. By Issie and Lucy

MEETS BICKERTON
AN OUTSTANDING SOUTH AFRICAN DAY
BY GOLDIE MORGAN
To celebrate and welcome our South African visitors, we had a special South African Day. We all dressed up in the colours of the South Africa flag and Class 5 did some South African cooking with Anthea and Louri. They made roti, milk tart, and vetkoek. Class 2 also made South African corn bread. Then they brought in the delicious, scrumptious food into the hall for everyone to taste. It was a great success! After all the classes came in, it was time for all the parents to come in so they could see some of the things their children had been doing the last couple of days with the South African teachers. Some children did traditional dancing and songs and others did a poem or shared their art. The day ended with a traditional British Cream Tea with scones, cream and jam. It was a special way to end a special week with our visitors from South Africa. Thanks to everyone who supported it!

JOURNEY TO SOUTH AFRICA

BY YASMIN PALMER & SOPHIE FURNIVAL
As part of our link with Tiger Kloof School, Mrs Weaver and Mrs Tedham went on a special working visit to South Africa. While they were there, they sent us e -mails and photos and when they came back, we really enjoyed hearing about their visit. They did an assembly and showed us videos and photos. It was interesting to see what was the same and what was different. We have been asking a few questions to Mrs Weaver and Mrs Tedham: What were the children like? They were so friendly & fabulous to work with. How was the school different? The school had two storeys, no grass and the church & high school were on the same ground. Did you enjoy it? Yes we enjoyed a lot! So now youve heard all about the trip from Mrs Weaver but here are some of Mrs Tedhams thoughts. What was the best thing about the visit? It was wonderful to build a strong link with a school in another country. The children at Tiger Kloof were so interested to learn about children at Bickerton! They loved it that both schools have pale blue polo shirts and that everyone learns to read with Biff, Chip and Kipper! Mrs Weaver and I were given such a huge welcome by the teachers and the smiling children. It was a great experience. Did you see any snakes or spiders? There were great big spiders in our bedroom which we couldn't catch because they moved so fast! I don't think they ran over us at night but you never know! There were some very poisonous snakes but we didn't see them! Perhaps we just weren't looking in the right place!

What was your favourite part? On our last day, we walked with elephants and went to a monHow long was your flight? It was 12 hours! We had to fly to Germany then to Johannesburg key sanctuary, then straight to the airport to get our plane! It was but got delayed in Germany because of snow. all a very exciting time!

NEWS FROM HOPE SCHOOL, ODESSA!

Thanks for maintaining links between our schools and for giving us a chance to update you on some of the current events in the life of school Hope. The calendar year is coming to an end and we are all looking forward to bright Christmas holidays. Its also a good chance to look back and reflect on whats happened this year...
One of the special days in our school is Teachers Day. October 5th is when we celebrated it in a unique way. On this day students of the 9-11th grades became teachers and they gave lessons to younger students instead of their regular teachers. Students who were teaching that day had worked very hard to prepare for their lessons and make them interesting. They were both excited and nervous as they also had to keep discipline and give marks to pupils in their classes. Everyone did well and the day ended with an amazing concert prepared by the students for their teachers. All the teachers were happy to see how talented the students were not only in studying but in singing, playing instruments, dancing and drama! October 28th was the day of our annual trade fair. It was really a lot of fun! Every class made delicious desserts with their parents help and different hand-made things. After classes in the school yard every class had a special counter where they could sell their products. All classes competed to make as much money as possible. Pupils of class 5B won! Well done, everyone! All the money raised at the fair went to school budget and new computer system units were bought for our computer lab. During the autumn break pupils of the school travelled to different places. Class 7A visited an ancient town of Olbia not far from Odessa where they saw archeological excavations and learned about the culture of Greek settlements on the territory of Southern Ukraine in the 6th century. Class 7A travelled to Lviv and celebrated Halloween there. You can imagine how scared other guests of the hotel were when they saw vampires, witches and ghosts marching in the hotel hall ways. Senior students travelled abroad to Spain by bus and saw other western countries. School holidays were very eventful! In November a month of road safety was held for students of the school. Pupils of Class 6B sang, told younger students about traffic rules and called upon all the children to be attentive on roads. Students of 8th grades took an active part in organizing days of Ukrainian culture in the school. They sang Ukrainian folk songs, danced traditional Ukrainian dances and recited poems. In December we plan a lot of activities dedicated to St Nicolas Day and Christmas. All the children are looking forward to the holidays and miracles that are going to happen at this magic time! We wish all our dear friends in England joy, hope, happiness and all the best at Christmas and all through the year! With lots of hopes to our lasting friendship! Irina Nikolayenko, English teacher

CRICKET SUCCESS
BY GOLDIE MORGAN & LUCY BOURNE Class 5 pupil Issie Harman likes nothing more than to play cricket in her spare time and she is doing really well! She had a brilliant summer season of playing for Northop U9s and being the only girl in the team! Issie then got offered for a place in the North East Wales Under 11 Girls Cricket Development Squad. Being involved in the summer of 2013 girls cricket was amazing for Issie because it includes specialist training and district matches against other girl cricket team. Issies awesome Northop coach also wanted her to play in the North East Wales boys squad as well as playing in the girls squad, but unfortunately, this was not possibly as they do not have mixed squads past the under 9s. Issies cricket ambition is to play for a girls team for Wales! Issie told us I love cricket because I grew up with all my family playing so I wanted to play too! Well done Issie, we are proud of you!

YEAR 2 ARE MULTI-SKILLED!

BEST BIKERS!
BY ZOE VAUGHAN & SASHA PRICE
Year 5 and 6 did a great cycling activity which lasted two days. Three instructors came in and worked with us and we had to do different activities on our bikes to keep safe on the road. They also taught us how to cross roads, turn safely and get off a bike as well as hand and body signals. All of us managed to get Level 2 which meant we got a badge and certificate. We all had a great time! Sophie told us I really enjoyed it and learnt a lot on the road, especially which roads are dangerous around us. Yasmin said It was really fun! I liked doing the Oops, I forgot my sandwiches turn!. Issie added Bikeability was a great experience to prepare us for cycling on the roads. The instructors were very kind and let everyone take part in everything. All the Year 5 and 6 children want to say THANK YOU for this experience.

Well done to the Year 2 children who participated in the Multi-skills tournament at Bishop Heber. Mrs Parsons said I was very proud of them and they enjoyed doing all the different events.
