NAME LETTER ACTIVITIES


MASKING TAPE NAMES

Use masking tape to print your childs name on the top of a table.
Have your child trace over the letters with their fingers, while you say the name of
each letter.

NAME RUBBINGS

Using the masking tape letters above, give your child a large piece of paper to lay on
top of the letters.
Next, give him a large peeled crayon.
Show him how to lay the crayon sideways and rub the crayon across the paper to
make a print of his name.

COVERING NAME LETTERS

Give your child some small object and have her cover the masking tape letters with
objects.
Examples: Cherrios, raisins, cottonballs.
Laying the objects on the letters will give your child the feel of the letters for
beginning writing.
COOKED SPAGETTI NAMES

Give your child some cooked spaghetti.


Show him how to use the spaghetti to form letters in his name.
PLAY DOUGH NAMES

Give your child some play dough.


Show her how to make long ropes out of the dough.
Finally, show her how to fashion the ropes into the letters of her name.

ALPHABET ART

DECORATING LETTERS

Use large letter patterns to cut out your desired letter from
light cardboard.
Brainstorm with your child the names of small objects that start
with the same sound as your letter.
Assemble some of these objects and let your child glue them
onto their large letter pattern.
LETTER MOSAICS

Look for large letters in magazines and newspapers.


Cut out letters in square shapes
Set out a pile of these letters and let your child make a letter
mosaic picture.
Variation: Look for only one specific letter and let your child
make a collage of this letter.
WAX STICKS

Purchase some wax sticks at a craft store.


Let your child mold their favorite letters with the wax sticks.
CHALK

Set out some colored chalk on the sidewalk or driveway.


Let your child use the chalk to make their favorite letters.
SEWING LETTERS

Using letter patterns, cut out large letter shapes from


cardboard.
Then using a hole punch, punch holes around the outside edge
of the letter shape, approximately 1 apart.
Give your child a shape and some yarn and have her sew around
the letter.
Place some tape around one end of the yarn to create a stiff
needle.

FINGER PAINTING LETTERS

Give your child some plain paper and some finger paint.
After spreading the paint across her paper, have her draw
specific letters in the paint.

PAINTERS TAPE LETTERS

Tape a painters tape letter onto a plain piece of paper.


Then give the paper to your child along with some paint and a
paint brush.
Have your child paint across the paper however he wishes.
When the paint is dry, help your child remove the tape to reveal
a white letter.
MYSTERY LETTERS

Using a white crayon, draw two or three letters on a piece of


white paper.
Then give your child a paint brush and some water colors or a

paint wash to spread paint across the paper.


The letters will pop out when they are covered with paint.
CLAY LETTERS

Give your child some play dough.


Show her how to make long ropes with the dough.
Then encourage her to make rope letters.
LETTER STAMPS

Purchase some letter stamps or sponges at the craft store.


Give your child an ink pad or paint pad and some paper.
Let your child stamp any letter he wishes on the paper or a
specific one you would like him to concentrate on.

BEGINNING LETTER RECOGNITION


Below are some inexpensive ideas for
surrounding your child with meaningful letter
activities at home.

Make letter books, using magazine pictures.


Have your child finger paint individual letters.
Give your child a box lid filled with a layer of salt, to
write letters in.
Show your child how to make letters with a pipe
cleaner or Chenille stem.
Have your child make letters with play dough.
Make letter pretzels.
Buy some letter stamps for your child to use.
Look for favorite letters in the newspaper.
Buy or make large cardboard letters to turn into
letter puzzles.
Make straight letter with craft sticks, E, T, H, A, M,
N.
Have your child look for the letters in her name on
road signs.
Let your child play with magnet letters on a
refrigerator or cookie sheet.
Write letters on a piece of paper in dots. Have your
child draw from dot to dot to complete the letters.
Cut out pieces of sandpaper, for your child to trace
with their finger and to also use for making letter
rubbings
