Millburn Hih $chool has lon had a thrivin Key Club, one ot a lare network ot student community service clubs attiliated with Kiwanis International. Most Key Clubs work closely with the adult members ot local Kiwanis Clubs. But until $ept. 26, there was no Kiwanis Club in the Millburn$hort Hills community, and the hih school oranization had to tunction without the support ot a complementary roup ot local adults. Now, thanks to more than a year ot work by a core roup ot Millburn students and teachers as well as otticers ot other north ]ersey Kiwanis Clubs, the Kiwanis Club ot Millburn$hort Hills is a reality. At a packed $ept. 26 ceremony to launch the new club, Kiwanis International's outoin president, Tom De]ulio, spoke ot the oranization's lobal reach in raisin money tor causes to help children. The club's current tocus is known as 'ELIMINATE' and aims to eradicate maternal and neonatal tetanus. Otticers ot the tledlin Millburn$hort Hills Kiwanis Club were sworn in at the event, which was held at Trattoria Oian Marco. At the helm is President Michael Birnber, whose dauhter Marlee Birnber worked with hih school advisers Neil Cooperman and Bridette Nevola to lay the roundwork tor the new club. Marlee is now a treshman at Cornell Lniversity. Mr. Cooperman and Ms. Navolo attended the ceremony, as did the Key Club's current president, $ylvia Levy, and vice president Karen Fich, both ot whom were involved in the ettort to launch a local Kiwanis Club. Olivia Estes, the dauhter ot Kiwanis Board member Kathleen Estes, was also present. Other otticers who were sworn in $ept. 26 are. Michael Dana, vice president, $usana FernandezPoyatos, $ecretary, and Roxanne Kam, Treasurer. Members ot the board ot directors are. Kathleen Estes, YuanFea Lai, Annette Romano, Eric $ieel, and $heila Tale. $o tar, members include Ore Kam, Carmella Keyles, Barry Kirschner, Tithi Majunder, Lisa Chenotsky $iner, Rita Weimer, and Oabriella Levy. From tundraisin ideas to teachin you how to dress, the RTC's this year encompassed all sorts ot thins. Bein it my tirst year in Key Club, I learned a lot about who Lieutenant Oovernors are, and what jobs everyone has in this club. Not only did I et to know our Millburn Key Clubbers better, but I also met new people trom across the state who also participated in Key Club. The RTC's were a meltin pot ot Key Clubbers, ranin trom Presidents to Oeneral Members. We also met the New ]ersey District Board members and the lieutenant governors of many of New Jerseys 23 divisions. Aside trom teachin skills to make us better Key Clubbers, seminars held there also tauht vital lite lessons, like public speakin, or how to be protessional. On top ot the hours we ot tor oin, the RTC's helped everyone interact with other Key Clubbers, and tauht us a little more about what Key Club is really about.
