Redesign Plan

Product Name: PC Game Box Target Group: The game packaging itself must be approachable and appreciable by all audiences. Current and prospective PC Gamers. Product History: PC Games packaging has changed much over the years. In the early days of PC Gaming there was really no standard of packaging, and the boxes were enormous, typically because most publishers included extra goodies inside the packaging like physical maps, large manuals, or other bonus items. In May of 2007, Microsoft attempted to standardize the packaging and online functionality of games with a standard and service called Games for Windows LIVE. This was a major op, because it introduced poor packaging standards, initially implemented a payto-play online model (similar to console online services), and the service itself was poorly implemented. Several publishers passed on adhering to the standards and opted for their own packaging. This created even more confusion in packaging standards. This can be seen still at some retail outlets where the Microsoft Games for Windows LIVE shelf display is still visible. The service and standard have since been dropped but the PC remains a poor contender amongst better standardized and well designed console games packaging. Purpose: With physical PC Game sales declining, due in large part to digital distribution, a package redesign that aims itself towards non-PC gamers is desirable. The physical packaging that contains the disc will be smaller, in line with Blu-rays trend. Collectors Edition copies will come in boxes, whereas standard releases will simply come in the disc packaging. The PC logo stripe will display prominently across the top of the packaging, with a logo on the spine and standards of placement for ratings and publishers/developers logos.
