SPECIALTY OF THE MONTH THE CROWN OF ROSES

Since we are nearing St. Patricks Day, I thought you might be interested in learning more about something not so run-of-themill when it comes to Irish collectibles. We all know about wool sweaters, Belleek porcelain and the Claddagh ring, but these items dont seem to fit the uniqueness of the rosary. These items of worship are widely used, yet rarely offered for sale because of the sentimental value associated with each. Many are produced worldwide, but Irelands rosaries are made of special materials. When thinking of an Irish rosary, thoughts often turn to those made of Connemara marble or those with Celtic crucifixes. The Irish Horn Rosary, however, is perhaps the most symbolic of Ireland because it represents the hard work of the people of Dublin. In 1927, the Mitchell Rosary Factory opened in Dublin and began production of rosaries made of horn, a material derived from naturally shed antlers of deer and goats. While many celebrated the creation of new jobs, there was also a cost to the city. The smell of boiling horn was extremely strong and annoyed many residents. Young girls working in the factory covered their hair with nets in the hopes of keeping the smell from clinging. There were many objections to the smell and the Mitchell Rosary Factory stopped making horn rosaries around 1960. If you are fortunate enough to come across an Irish rosary, consider the work and effort put forth to produce it. We often dont realize what had to take place for our predecessors to manufacture the items we use every day. Enjoy and appreciate!

Ingenious Fixes to Daily Problems
Store your porcelain out of direct sunlight in a display case or dust-free cabinet Use a hair dryer on its coolest setting or canned air to dust each piece. If excessively dusty use a clean, soft paintbrush or lint-free cloth. Immerse only fully glazed pieces in a deep sink filled with warm, soapy water. Be sure to line the sink with a towel before placing the piece into the water. Rinse with warm running water until all soap is gone and dry with a lint-free cloth. Cheers for now! .

Collecting Belleek Porcelain

The Ides of March beckon St. Patricks Day and its fanciful Wearin O the Green. One of our favorite holidays lends an ear to Ireland and its timehonored traditions of excellence in workmanship. One product from Ireland is Belleek porcelain. Belleek is extremely light and eggshell thin therefore quite fragile. Many pieces have not survived over the years. The hard parianware of Belleek became very well known due to its surface which displayed an iridescence likeness to mother of pearl. The Belleek Pottery Co. was established in Ireland in the late in 1857, by Robert William Armstrong. Belleek porcelain is well collected, and can still be found today. Although it is becoming harder to find a real antique piece of Belleek, it is possible to locate perfect pieces. Some of the most sought after items are painted medallions and freestanding figures of characters from Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream. A word to the wisebe careful when buying pieces on-line, without the benefit of seeing the actual piece. Unfortunately, Belleek is one of the most popular counterfeited porcelains. It is also wise to know your dealers, on or off line. Happy collecting!
