In The Pearl, Kino is the main

character or protagonist.
Although he is a poor fisherman,
he lives a happy and contented
life with his wife Juana and his
son Coyotito.
However, his and his family’s
lives begin to change the day
he finds a beautiful pearl. He
places his hopes and dreams on
the pearl. He wishes for the
good things in life for himself
and his family. He hopes to
send his son to school.
Everyone in the community hopes
to gain something from the pearl. The
greedy doctor hopes to charge high
fees, and so make money out of Kino.
The village priest hopes to get a
generous donation for the church.
However, when the pearl buyers
try to cheat him by offering him a
very low price for the pearl, he
decides to go against “the whole
structure, the whole way of life”.
He makes up his mind to sell his
pearl in the capital. His decision to
do so affect his destiny and the
lives of the people around him.
People unknown to him begin to plot
to steal his pearl. In one struggle
with an intruder who tries to steal
his pearl, he kills the man. As a
result, he is forced to flee for the
mountains with his family.
