Brochure
Description: Date:
3/29/14 A two-sided folding brochure.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03 Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools: Objectives:

Adobe InDesign/Adobe Illustrator/Adobe Photoshop

Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate at least four quality images. One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image. Write at least 250 words of original copy with at least three paragraphs. Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

Process:

The first thing was design a new logo. I drew each element with the pen tool. I used the type tool for the words in the logo. I created the brochure using Adobe InDesign. I pulled guides out from the ruler to show where the folds and images would be. I had most of the body copy typed on my blog already, but I modified it in Microsoft Word and then copied it on to the brochure. I used diagonal alignment with the two watermarked rolling pins, which are a repeated element from the logo. I clipped a photo of cookies using Photoshop.

Quick tips for making perfect chocolate chip cookies:

Always use butter instead of margarine, unless the recipe calls for shortening. Always use a recipe that calls for salt, chocolate chip cookies just dont taste right without salt. Use dark brown sugar as opposed to light. Eat some cookie dough before you bake it. This has got to be done every time you make cookies. Experiment with it and figure out how to make your own perfected chocolate chip cookies.

Use The basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign. Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Design consistent layouts for a letterhead. Letterhead: 8.5 x 11 Apply typography rules keeping small copy. Learning to keep things simple by having watermarks, drop shadows, light, and white space. Applying contact information: Include name, address, phone, and email on each piece.

Process:

I used the pen and type tools in Adobe Illustrator to create my logo. I drew each of the images (spoon and hat) with the pen tool and manipulated the type with the use of outlines to fit it together. I then placed the logo on to a document in InDesign, which I used to create the letterhead. There was a link from Illustrator to InDesign for the logo and images, so I changed my logo and images as I needed to in Illustrator to fit to my design and updated the link in InDesign. I changed the opacity of the chef hat on the letterhead to create a watermark.

Logos
Description: Date:
2/22/14 Three different logos for the same company.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03 Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that will appeal to the audience. Use only the tools to create and draw your logos. Gather opinions from at least ten outside sources about which logo appeals most to them.

Process:

First I looked at images of chef hats and started sketching the ones that I liked. I sketched up a bunch of different logo designs and created my favorite three on Adobe Illustrator. I used the pen tool to draw the chef hat, which I used in all three designs. I also used the pen tool to draw the book on the third design. On the first design used a circle with a stroke and typed on the path of the circle for the text. On the second design I used the convert anchor points tool to fit the curve on the bottom of the hat to the c in college.

Event Ad
Description: Date:
2/01/14 A full-bleed event ad made to promote a fundraiser using only Microsoft Word and a scanned image.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03 Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word

Objectives:

Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together). Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design. Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience. Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.

Process:

I searched for an image in a magazine and scanned it to my flash drive. Then I sketched up some possible flier ideas and used Microsoft Word to create and carry out those ideas. I organized text boxes and rectangles with the scanned image and layered them over one another. I followed typography rules for the heading and body copy, giving the heading an old style font and the body copy a sans serif font.

Flier
Description: Date:
1/25/14 This is a black and white flier to promote a leadership conference for college graduates.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03 Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout. Retrieve image and logo from links on this page. Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links intact.

Process:

First I sketched some possible layouts for the flier. Then I went onto InDesign and started mapping out the flier. I used the black dots and borders as repetition to tie the image together as a whole. I made the title large and body copy small for contrast. I placed the website at the bottom of the page by itself so it would stand out, but its still small because it isnt as important with the other information already on the flier. I was given the image, logo and content for the flier.

Montage
Description: Date:
2/15/14 Inspirational poster created as a montage using multiple images and a quote.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03 Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow. Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant message. Learn to blend images together gradually, using masks. Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements. Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image. Apply typography principles. Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size. Select good quality images.

Process:

First I found a quote and then searched for pictures online that would fit well with it. Then I uploaded the images in Adobe Photoshop. I used masks to make the images fade into one another. I added the quote over the image and changed it to an overlay. I added drop shadows to each of the text items (quote and quote attribution). I changed the color of the image of the girl so it would blend better with the background images.

Web Page
Description: Date:
3/15/14 A web page designed to showcase a personally created logo.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03 Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools: Objectives:

Text Wrangler/ Adobe Photoshop

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side is 300 500 pixels. Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content. Identify hex colors for web design. Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file. Open your HTML page in a web browser, and capture a quality screen shot with .5 inch margins for printing.

Process:

I created this web page using only TextWrangler. I learned the correct codes for HTML and CSS so I could place the text and images where I want them and format the page. I used Photoshop to find the hex codes for the colors that I needed by using the eye dropper tool. Then I used CSS to style the page, to format the text font and alignment as well as the image placement.

Imaging
Description: Date:
2/05/14 Demonstrate good photography through image editing skills.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03 Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools: Objectives:
Learn basic photography skills. Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the colors into the layout. Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it. Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE. Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout.

Process:

First I needed to pick a color scheme, I originally wanted a monochromatic reddish pink theme, but that altered to an analogous scheme that included pinks. Then I had to go out and find my photos. I rented a camera from the library and used that to take my pictures. From those photos I chose my favorite, the lock. I then altered the image with the use of hue saturation, selective color, and filters.
