DEFINE LITERATURE.
 Literature, a body of written works. The name has traditionally been applied to those
imaginative works of poetry and prose distinguished by the intentions of their authors
and the perceived aesthetic excellence of their execution. Literature may be classified
according to a variety of systems, including language, national origin, historical period,
genre, and subject matter.

WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF LITERATURE?

 Literature is important because it develops critical thinking skills, fosters empathy for
others, reduces stress and develops readers' personal experiences. It can also be a
learning tool for subjects including medicine, history, sociology and psychology.

WHAT ARE THE TWO MAIN DIVISIONS OF LITERATURE? EXPLAIN.

There are two divisions of literature: prose and poetry.

 Prose is writing that resembles everyday speech. The word prose is derived from the
Latin prosa which literally means straightforward. Prose is adopted for the discussion
of facts and topical reading and does not adhere to any particular formal structures
other than simple grammar.
 Poetry is any writing in verse form. The word poetry is derived from the
Greek poiesis which literally means creating or creating. Poetry relies heavily on
imagery, precise word choice and figures and speech.

WHAT IS LYRIC POEM?

 Lyric poetry is a formal type of poetry which expresses personal emotions or feelings,
typically spoken in the first person. The term derives from a form of Ancient Greek
literature, the lyric, which was defined by its musical accompaniment, usually on a
stringed instrument known as a lyre.

WHAT IS FICTION?
 Fiction broadly refers to any narrative consisting of imaginary people, events, or
descriptions—in other words, a narrative not based strictly on history or fact. It also
commonly refers, more narrowly, to written narratives in prose and often specifically
novels.
