In the early days…

‫ ٭‬Stories were simple accounts of the events that


took place during the day. Later on, man learned to
express his own feelings, what he observed around
him, the behavior of others, his dreams, and his
beliefs to other people.

‫ ٭‬Today, telling stories means sharing experiences,


real or imaginary.
Values of Storytelling

1. It introduces children to the world of written


language.
2. It gives opportunity to become acquainted with
the best of children’s literature.
3. It increases a child’s knowledge and
experiences.
4. It creates desire to know about the lives of other
people and to know their culture.
5. It develops the ability to be good listeners and it
stirs their imagination and become creative.
6. It gives pleasure and enjoyment.
7. When telling a story himself, the child learns to
organize and express himself clearly, at the
same time, building confidence in his ability to
face an audience.
Advantages of Storytelling

1. Storytelling is more direct than reading.


2. It establishes rapport between storyteller and
listeners.
3. A long piece of literature can be shortened so
children can hear the story in one sitting.
Qualities of Stories Suitable for Narrating

1. It must have simple and well-rounded plots.


2. It must have an underlying theme.
3. The characters should be few and they must be
true to what they are supposed to be whether
they are real or imaginary.
4. The background of the story must be authentic
in places and in time.
5. It must have conversation, catch phrases,
repetition of words or phrases, rhyming words
and colorful language.
6. I must be imaginative, adventurous, and rich in
details.
Qualities of a Good Storyteller

1. Must know how to select a good story to tell.


2. Must enjoy the story himself and must want to
share it with children.
3. Must know the story so well.
4. Must be natural in expressing himself and look
at his listeners to see their reactions.
5. Must have imagination, insight, spontaneity,
and concentration.
6. The choice of words must be appropriate to the
nature of the story and fit the listeners for
whom it is intended.
7. Have no props or books to avoid confusion.
8. The storyteller must not be overdressed.
9. Should speak clearly with well-modulated
voice.
10. Should either stand or sit still.
11. Should avoid moralizing stories with strong
preaching overtones.
