Lydia Villanueva Arguilla
is known as the founder of one
of the first galleries of modern
art in the Philippines.
Wife of Mr. Manuel Arguilla
took up Journalism at University
of the Philippines and worked as
a copyreader and an editor
When the war broke out, the
Arguillas joined Marking’s
Guerillas
SUMMARY:
It was an expected moment when a Filipina met one of the American soldier after
the Japanese had been driven out of Manila. Oren ask her to come with him for a
friendly date and she observe their differences. When the night was about to end
Oren admit that she likes her and ask for another date which is only exclusively
for them and she accept Oren’s invitation. During that night they exchange their
stories in life before the war was happened and she realize that Oren was a
colonizer but with a good side and like the other Filipino, Oren is just an ordinary
person in America but because of the war he missed everything in his life.
Eventhough Oren admit that she wants to marry her, she still view that night as a
friendly date and thank Oren for that unexpected memories.
Characters:

decent Filipino woman.

Rose - half American and a friend of the unnamed

EXPOSITION:
She was standing on the corner of the road until the
jeep stop in front of her with two lieutenants.
“Which way are you going please”
-she asked the two lieutenant

“The way you’re going sweetheart”


-Harry said

RISING ACTION:
While riding the jeep Oren and Harry introduce their
self to Lydia. And Oren asked Lydia a friendly date.

“How about a date honey? We’re a couple of strangers


in this town. We don’t know anybody and we like to
dance”

CONFLICT:
Man Vs. Society
She observe that Harry’s began teasing Rose and she
didn’t like it when Harry tried to put his arm around
Rose for a picture.
Lydia Known enough Americans before the war and
seen enough to understand that an American boy’s arm
around a girl’s shoulder could mean simple friendliness.

CONFLICT:
Man Vs. Self
Because during that day Oren always called
Lydia “sweetheart” or “honey” and it made
Lydia feel like a gun moll.

“Seriously honey like you, your a nice girl, I’ll
marry you and take you to the states“
“I love you, you’re clean and decent. You believe
me don’t you?”

“If you believe yourself, sure”

“I mean it honey”

“Yes, you met me this afternoon”

‘But I’ve been looking you for three years. I’ve


never meet anyone like you”

FALLING ACTION:
Lovely quiet evening, candlelight, red tablecloth and a girl at
the piano.
“It seems unbelievable that you and I should be talking here
like this, you a Filipino and I an American. Never in my wildest
dreams did I ever imagine myself in Manila, sitting at this
table, at this moment with you. Three years ago I was in
college. Working my way. Making good money too. I won’t have
trouble about a job when I get back. My job’s waiting for me”
