26Quarter 2–Module 2.
27BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER
28BROADCASTER: Towards the end of our episode, we are supposed to;
291. recognize was and were as the past form be- verbs of am, is and are (EN3G-IIab-3.4);
302. identify sentences using was and were; and
313. write simple sentences using the be-verbs (was, were) correctly.
32Recognizing was and were as the past forms of be-verbs am, is, and are, is important because
33pupils will learn to construct simple sentences correctly involving past tense expressions that is
34useful for every day conversation. Now kids, are you ready to learn? Let’s start!
35BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER
36BROADCASTER: I hope you are excited to learn our new lesson. But first, let us have a quick
37review of be-verbs am, is and are. Be-verbs am, is and are are verbs in present form. “Is” is
38always used with singular nouns and pronouns. “Am” is always used with the pronoun I. “Are”
39is always used with the pronoun You, plural nouns, and pronouns.
40Let’s try to answer the following questions: Are you ready kids? (Pause) Great!
41BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

9BROADCASTER: We are about to start our discussion, but first let’s have an activity. Let’s do
10the Sentence Grouping. Are you excited kids? (PAUSE) That’s great! Read the following
11sentences carefully. I was in the mall last week. You were late in the meeting. The girl was in the
12park yesterday. He was so happy to see his puppy. The children were playing in the gym. Mimi
13and Timmy were friends a long time ago.
14This time, group the sentences correctly using the be-verbs inside the boxes. Examples are
15indicated on each box. Copy the boxes on your notebook and write your answers inside the box.
16You will be given 10 seconds to answer. On the first box are the sentences using be-verb was:
17Example: I was in the mall last week
18The answers are: The girl was in the park yesterday. He was so happy to see his puppy.
19On the second box are sentences using be-verb were: Example: The children were playing in the
20gym. The answers are: You were late in the meeting. Mimi and Timmy were friends a long time
21ago. Very good kids. You’re truly amazing.
22BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER
23Now, take a look at the two tables. What did you notice in the sentences on each table? Yes. On
24the first table, the sentences used the be-verb WAS. While on the second table, the sentences
25used the be-verb WERE. Today, we will talk about the be-verbs WAS and WERE.
26Now, what is a be-verb? Be-verbs are also called as linking verbs. They do not express actions.
27They are called verbs of being because these indicate state of being. They link or connect the
28noun or pronoun (subject) to the predicate. These verbs of being are- am, is, are. Though they are
29not action words, but they also have their past form. Past form refers to actions done in the past
30and are indicated with time expressions like earlier, yesterday, the other day, last week, last
31month, or long ago. This time let us focus on the past form of be-verbs was and were.
32BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER
33Let’s start with the be-verb, WAS. “Was” is the past form of am and is. We will use was with a
34singular subject. When we say singular subject, it refers to only one noun or pronoun. Can you
35still remember what is a noun? Yes? How about the pronoun? Very good, a noun is a name of
36person, place, thing, animal or an event. A pronoun is a substitute for a noun. Singular pronouns
37include I, He, She, and It. Let us read a sentence with a singular noun as subject. My guitar was
38given by my uncle last year. In this sentence, the subject is guitar. It is singular because it refers

2
1to only one thing. The time expression used is last year, which happens in the past, therefore we
2used the be-verb was. Another example, The girl was crying yesterday. The subject is the girl. It
3is singular because it refers to only one person. The time expression used is yesterday, which
4happens in the past, therefore we used the be-verb was. How about sentences with singular
5pronouns as subject? Let us read together these sentences. She was playing with her doll this
6morning. He was playing basketball yesterday. It was raining last night. In the first sentence,
7She is the pronoun used as a subject in the sentence. Time expression is this morning, which
8happens in the past therefore we used the be-verb WAS. Second sentence, He is the pronoun
9used as a subject and the time expression is yesterday, hence we used the be-verb WAS. Last
10sentence, It is the pronoun used as a subject and last night is the time expression, we used the be-
11verb WAS. And for the pronoun I, was is also used as be-verb in sentences which happens in the
12past. For example, I was sick yesterday. I was lying on the bed. I was treated by the doctor. I is
13the subject, time expression is yesterday and we used WAS as be-verb. How about the be-verb
14WERE?
15BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER
16The be-verb WERE is the past form of are. We use were with a plural noun and pronoun. When
17we say plural subject, it refers to two or more nouns or plural pronouns. They and we are plural
18pronouns. Let’s read the following sentences with plural nouns as subject. Tina and Mark were
19reading the newspaper this morning. Our birthdays were celebrated last month. In the first
20sentence, the subject is Tina and Mark, which is plural. On the second sentence, the subject is
21birthdays, which is plural also. The time expressions used are this morning and last month which
22happens in the past. Therefore, we use the be-verb WERE. Now, for plural pronouns as subject,
23take note that the pronoun You can be singular or plural and is always followed by are or were
24depending on the tense. Are for present tense and were for past tense. Together, let us read these
25sentences. They were listening to the story yesterday. We were cleaning our living room last
26Saturday. You were laughing at the clowns earlier. Can you tell me what is the subject in each
27sentence? Very good, They, We and You are the subjects in these examples. How about the time
28expressions used in each sentence? You are right, yesterday, last Saturday and earlier are the
29time expressions used in the following sentences. Therefore, we used the be-verb WERE in each
30sentence. Good job kids.

32As we continue our lesson, let’s do some exercises to widen our understanding about the be-
33verbs, was and were. Are you ready kids? That’s good to hear. Let’s start. I will show you some
34sentences and analyze the correct be-verb in each sentence. Write your answers in your paper.
351. We (was, were) at school yesterday. What is the correct be-verb? … insert 10 seconds. The
36answer is WERE. Very good. We is a plural pronoun, hence we use were.
372. Robert and Stewart (was, were) his friends. What is your answer? … insert 10 seconds. The
38answer is WERE because the subject is plural.

3
13. They (was, were) in front of the supermarket. What is your answer? … insert 10 seconds. That
2is right, WERE because they is a plural pronoun.
34. She (was, were) in Canada last year. What is the correct be-verb? … insert 10 seconds. Yes,
4WAS is the correct be-verb because she is a singular pronoun.
55. I (was, were) in the museum the other day. What is your answer? … insert 10 seconds. The
6answer is WAS because I is a singular pronoun. Do you get a perfect score? Wow. That’s quite
7impressive.
8BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER
9Always remember that the be-verb or linking verb does not express actions, but they connect the
10noun or pronoun to make a sentence complete. The be-verb was is the past form of “am and is”
11and used in singular nouns and pronouns. The be-verb were is the past from of “are” and used in
12plural nouns and pronoun.
13BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

36the subject they that is a plural pronoun. Very good kids. In no.2, the correct answer is WERE
37because of the subject children which is a plural noun. Good one kids. How about in no. 3, the
38answer is WAS because of the singular noun, man as the subject of the sentence. Way to go kids.

4
1For no. 4, the answer is WAS because of the singular pronoun, I as a subject. Nice one kids. And
